OT - I've been bad...

H isn't feeling well so he's sound asleep in his recliner. I took advantage of it and went shopping.

I needed some lights for the seedlings -- got them!

Also needed more trays to start seeds -- got them!

Found healthy blueberry bushes marked $5 at our local Wal-Mart. Who could resist? Bought them too. Of course, they rang up for $10 each. Cashier called the floor manager who said give them to me at $5 each.

Found nice 1-1/2 gallon pots for $2 each -- bought a few.

Potting soil also appeared to be priced somewhat low -- less than 1/2 of what I was paying last year. Bought some more.

Things were going so well that I went over to the books -- found several for $5 each. Only bought one -- it should be raining here tomorrow!

The floor manager told me that almost everyone in the garden department had quit. They are extremely short-handed and most don't know what they are doing. I may need to stop by every couple of days until they get a workforce trained!

We're in the mid-70's with sunshine today. Clouds are building but the temps should stay in the 70's with lows in the 50's. Oh, do I have spring fever!!!!!

I noticed the azaleas are blooming. Trees are beginning to bud out. Shouldn't have to wait too much longer.

Ha...You weren't "bad" you were smart!!..You got good deals that you can't pass up!!...lol...I'd of done the same thing :)

I was at my wal-mart today as well, unfortunately the blueberries were correctly marked here. doubly unfortunate that they were not a variety that can tolerate our extreme summer heat. Guess no one in our garden department knows what they are doing either!

Mehitabel - The good side of things is that I've realized what a ridiculous waste of money so many things are. Starbucks? No way! 4 tall lattes = a new orchid. I'd rather take the orchid, thanks. Q - you clearly are much more well behaved than I am. You should try the sedirea though - no need for a tank, and if it can survive in the cold, dry, sun-less canadian winter, I'm sure it'll do fine for you. MrB - Hopefully I don't come across as being presumptuous for getting these kinda hard to grow plants - honestly, I do realize how much I need to learn! :) Actually, some of the things I ordered were not listed on the oakhill website; I e-mailed Greg and he sent me a list of things. That was pretty cool of him to do. Still searching for that distincta/splendida though Carol - those ghosts are really cute but weird...there are several of them mounted on one stick...seems like they were recently mounted. I've popped them into the tank and will be keeping a close eye on them. If they do well in the next few weeks I'll post an update. Let me know if you're interested in trying one or two :) Kev - you terrible enabler. Yes, I definitely did eye the dends. That's for my next order :-) And speeding across the great lakes on a boat? Puh-leeeze...that's soo crude - I'm much more of a jumping-from-a-plane-with-parachute-orchids-in-tow-in-the-dead-of-night kinda guy. PS - my habenaria woke up! what should I do with it? Here's my take. I know we all have our preferences but I never blame a medium for problems. That is just me. Here again, however, we have a testimonial from someone who deciding that their mix is too 'soggy' repots into something more open but then experiences continued problems now perhaps due to too dry conditions leading to brittle, dead, roots that don't develop. The unassisted (by artificial light) west window is at once too much light and too little! Your area can see frequent clouds and I suspect an atlas would show your locale receiving less than 180 clear days out of 365. IMO this is too little for good growth of anything but 'low light' species. OTOH when the sun 'is' shining and temps are up in the mid-80's possibly higher that is too much, even I admit that. The only recourse is to shade away the worst of the natural light. What is left will not cause heat stress or scorch but neither will it be able to put size into a p-bulb. The difference must be made up artificially. If someone knows of another way I would like to hear it. When orchids stall, sulk or otherwise go on strike the reason will always be found outside of the pot. Too litttle (rarely too much) light, too little or too much heat, too little or too much ventilation... external causatives. Water 1x/wk for a plastic pot, 2x/wk for a clay pot regardless of what is in it and call it good! Do not spray or mist or otherwise try to 'top up' orchid pots. That way lies madness and also root rot. With experience will come the ability to experiment in ways that will not harm your plants. Until then its best to follow some rules. They won't always be a perfect fit but they work for quite a lot of growers new and old. H

Ficus are a Mealybug favorite. You don't mention that you have used horticultural oil. Oil will kill Mealybugs if done correctly. However living in California you probably have a ready source for re-infestation in your yard. So it is likely that you are killing them and they are re-infesting your Ficus almost immediately. You may be able to reduce the number of Mealybug in your yard by introducing Biological controls such as the Mealybug Destroyer, and limiting the use of broad spectrum pesticides, if you use these. The main thing is to stop them re-infesting your plant. If you must after trying everything else you can mix some Imidacloprid into the soil. Be sure to find a formula registered for house plants and follow the label to the letter. Another caution on using the Imidacloprid is that it can encourage Spider Mites, so only use it where you absolutely must and watch out for the Mites. Thank you all. :) I feel like she was sent to us for a reason and we love her so much. She hasn't snapped at me in almost a week. LOL She still doesn't care much for our pug kids but we're making tiny steps in the right direction. I took a chance on her level of trust in me and cut her hair earlier. She done very! well , much to my suprise. Healthwise, she's on a roll in the right direction. Finally putting on some weight (she was 9 whole lbs @ her vet checkup :( ) , her hair is growing back and her owies are healing. I hope on hope there's a special place in hell for the person that treated her so badly and the more I work with her and learn , the more I hope that person goes there. That isn't neccessarily the right way to think but from my experience and in working with her , I've figured out she was absolutly loved , pampered and trained by someone in her former life and then for whatever reason landed in the wrong hands. I took her to a public event and she socially gravitated toward older gentleman and not even knowing them , sat ever so gently next to them at their feet. I really think she was owned by such a gentleman and then he met an unfortunate fate of some type (i.e. nursing home, facility or worse) and whomever was supposed to care for her in a way he hoped, sure failed her miserably. She lets me work with her , love on her and care for her BUT she truly thinks the sun rises and sets on my husband so she certainly puts more trust in men than women. Lucky for her , he loves her as much as she does him or she'd be in trouble (or I would...LOL). Anyways, that's the Honey update. :) Have a safe and happy holiday weekend everyone!!

I would love to try some blueberries but don't know what variety could handle our heat either. Sounds like some good buys Amelia.

You sure did some great bargain shopping and that all in HIS sleep lol. Way to go ha ha ha

I bought 2 blueberry plants last year. They did not grow an inch. So this year I will have to give them MORE sun. Are they slow growers?

Rabbiteye type blueberries can handle our heat, but like a sandy and acidic soil, so raised beds will work best with losts of peat moss,organic matter and compost if you are in a more alkaline soil. In MG class, the recommended varieties for North Central Texas (where I live) are Tifblue and Climax. Other varieties from my book are Briteblue, Delite and Britewell. You need 2 varieties for cross pollination. They don't like fertilizer near their base and no nitrogen fertilizer because it is detrimental to the the growth of berries.

Lucy, your county extension agent can probably give you more tips for them.

Sounds like you did very GOOD.

I planted 5 blueberry bushes I dug up from my daughters last year. Only 2 survived my DH late evening runs with the lawn mower.
Lawn mowers should never come with cup holders and head lights! ;) LOL

Amelia, you did great with all your buys! I should run there and get more soil. Can't recall who, Daniella or Theresa, got some of those seed starter trays for $6 and that is a good buy. I had bought some years ago, and just recently brought them in from the garage. They are mostly the large one and a couple of smaller one -- can you believe the tags say I paid $1 for them! I am glad I got them back then, and they still look new -- goes to show why we shouldn't throw plastic in the landfills -- it doesn't deteriorate!

LOL.. I call that "Proper Job Planning".. The company I worked for sent us to numerous courses to educate us about proper job planning.. I use it all the time...
