I have a question regarding space for roots.

I have planted all my brugmansia around my oak trees. The problem is that I can go down just about the depth of a 1 gallon pot before I start to hitting roots, will this be enought room for the brugmansia to grow, or should I move them? The soil is light, it consist of sugar sand, with lots of mulch, compose and cow manure.

In my tropical bed, I planted ginger, under the same conditions, they love it. The problem there is I cannot dig up any plants to share, they are interlocked with the roots of the oat tree, do you think the brugmansia would do the same? Will this hurt the blooms?

I would think it will probably do the same since even in a pot they spread out of the side holes. If you plant to move them later I wouldn't plant them there.

I think the roots will find their way into open space but will they get enough light being under an oak?

yes! thank you. i now have 2 of those smaller, more blue-gray ones, and i think you're right -- that's the brevifolia. i seem to remember seeing it labelled as such at the place i go to look at plants [for sale]. humm.. i guess DARTMOUTH was wrong about the name?? i dunno. anyway, thank you very much for your reply. the little guy seems to be doing fine. i think one more leaf started getting brown at its base, and i quickly pulled it off.. there's weird little brown splotches on the bases of the lowest leaves on it, but they're not really soft. they're on the thin part right next to the stem, you know? the white part. i think they're fine. the stem seems just fine, and that's what counts, right.. i guess i should not have watered it directly after transplanting. oh well. i've been RACKING up my succulent collection creating boxes, pots, and a bed full of them, preparing for the heat. i suppose it's not transplant time, but i make sure they don't get TOO cold. since the frosts have stopped, the nights have been around 40 degrees lately, and my plants don't seem to mind too much. i mean the ones inside are making flowers right now, heh.. the ones outside are just continuing to look healthy. i'm keeping them as dry as i can stand (watering's too much fun!). i'll send photos and MORE QUESTIONS sooooooooon. thanks again, paul

Lycheeluva, Are you knew to this like me? I have grown tropicals for a while but mango I have not been able to grow succesfully until recently. I am happy so far. I have had my Cogshall the longest and though it has a little anthracnose, it is pretty happy. I have removed suckers below the graft now twice. Today was the second time I removed the sucker. It is amazing to me how fast they grow. I am hoping now that my Cogshall has finished blooming and lost all the small fruit, it will grow now. I have not had a flush yet. When I got it it was maturing a flush that had been growing before I bought it in July. 5 months now and all it has done is bloom and grow suckers. I am feeding it periodically. I think that when you weight 300-400+ pounds that those 5-10lb losses are typical. I know for myself that my first 22 pounds went fast and the last 10 are really being stubborn. Just my theory.

Karyn, I have them under 3 large oak trees, but they do get morning sun, I stood under the trees to make sure each plant received morning sun, even Kristys plants. Its too hot in Rockport, to plant in direct sun. Even the plumeria do better if they get some shade during the day. I guess only time will tell, I sure hope they do well. I broke off a piece of my daydreams transporting it to Rockport, and just stuck the piece in the ground. This weekend,I checked the small piece, and I think its going to root, wouldn't that be great, I would have a plant to trade. Barbra,

We have a cypress tree when we had ours planted in the ground that choked the brugmansia to the point that it almost killed it. So I would advise you to do the double pot above the ground if you are planting up under the trees.

you will have to water tremendously because of the oak roots
i think it will be tough to get good performance from your brugs.

My experence with brugmansias in the ground is that the roots don't grow downward. I had a frosty pink cutting growing in a shady spot. When it was about 3 feet tall, i decided to move it to a different location. All i did was pull it up from the ground. I didnt even use a shovel. There were no vertical roots that went more than six inches into the ground. They all had a tendency to grow horizontally and it had about five anchor roots that stretched for about four feet each. It is now an eight foot tall plant and when i plant smaller annuals around it, i find that there are massive roots growing near the surface within a seven foot radius. Of course a shallow root system also means it will need to be watered more often.

Today, I was going to move the plants when I got back down, but after reading this, I decided to keep them where there are planted. I hope they do well. Barbra,
