This is all that I can find in one book, I will check on more just to be sure I didn't leave any out. Some of these are still classified as a Agave. In other books.

Thanks, Norma, we freezer-burned folk will find that useful. I myself have resolved to have more Yucca (if they're going to carry them in the nurseries around here).

I have to disagree that Y. filamentosa is good in all zones.

I have problems with Y. filamentosa leaves (and someetimes the plants) surviving here in USDA zone 4a (-25ÃÂ°F to -30ÃÂ°F). In most winters the leaves that are not covered by snow are burned off and don't survive the winter. I have never had a Y. filamentosa flower in my yard.

Or are you talking about Sunset zones? Sunset zones are entirely different from the USDA zones. I know many Californians use the Sunset zones since they're a little more precise than the USDA zones and cover a much smaller area than the USDA zones.

USDA zone 1 is -50ÃÂ°F or below. Very few plants can handle temps like that. Y. glauca I think is hardy to zone 3 and maybe into zone 2.

Fall-Winter is my favorite time to garden! The hot weather here in the Central Valley, California, makes me very sick (heat/sun stroke, losing my pigments, sunburned very easily). I measured the temperature in my garden this morning about 6:40 a.m., between 27-31 Degrees F. Our roommate's car at 7:15 a.m. still has solid ice all over the entire car! I'm amazed that all of my Tomato plants (Pear and Cherry) are still looking healthy, with no signs of stress. My Tomato plants have always died before when the temperature drops below freezing. Maybe they are acclimatizing to the cold weather ..... Looks like all of my seedlings are enduring this chilling weather. I have over 100 different kinds of plants growing now, including summer plants: Tomatoes, Eggplants > Thai, Peppers, Basil, Zinnias, California Poppies, Morning Glories, Four O'clocks, and more ... Now, if only the gophers will leave me something to eat this Winter .... Stray cat's nearly destroyed my most recent seed bed. Picked fresh Southern Curled Mustard and Red Giant Mustard and Chinese Cabbage to add to my sandwich yesterday! Looking forward to fresh Lettuce, Beet Greens, Collard Greens, Kale, Kohlrabi Greens, Swiss Chard, Radish Greens, Stinging Nettle, Dandelions which should be ready soon ..... -- Jim (Central Valley, California) > Climate Zone #8/14 > Hardiness Zones #8-9a

We live in Elk Grove, not the prime area to grow avos. I covered it the first few years, but it got too big and it's on it's own. Our tree is maybe 10 years old and has been giving fruit 4 of the last 5 seasons. The Winter it was extremely cold we got no fruit the following season and there was some damage done to the tree, but it seems to have recovered just fine. It is a Bacon variety and self pollinates as I am not aware of any other avos in our neighborhood. This year we had a bumper crop and stopped counting at 300 fruit. I'm going to order an extra large Stewart from Green Acres Nursery in late March. 15 gallon or larger and plant it about 25 feet from the bacon.

Containers larger than 5 gallons sitting on the ground out of wind will be ok. Smaller should be on ground and covered at night or in the garage near a window.

I guess hardiness is all about where one lives. I will keep my mouth shut because I might list things that are only hardy to Zone 6. I think of yuccas that are hardy to Zone 7 as being hardy yuccas. I think there are several Yuccas that are indigenous to the moist/cool areas of the southeast that will thrive in the NorthEast to varying degrees. ie. Y. aliofolia, Y. recurvifolia, Yucca rostrata, Y gloriousa, Y. flacida, . I hear people complaining hardily (who live in Illinois, Pennsylvania, NY) of not being able to kill their Yucca when they no longer like them . They keep coming up from the roots. I did not ask the variety.

I've got two / three which are partially buried by snow now. We're considered Z4/Z5 (USDA) here.
