Still another whacked jade

I wanted to improve the quality of my jade so I decided to whack it. Here're few pics to share.

First whacked on Sept 1:

One month later:

Four months later:

And Five months later:

I hope I will have a beautiful, healthy jade by the end of this year.

There's an observation, though. You can see from the above photos that the cuts right above the nodes grew more leaves and more quickly than one that was cut way above the nodes. It was my mistake this time :-(

I have that on one of the branches on my Jade that I whacked! Sparse leaves...

Toni, I'm not 100% sure, more like 90%. If Gary has a shot of the ends of the branches and flowers, we could tell for sure. The key trait (beyond being a tree form) is the distinctly four-sided stems. The mature growth looks much much different than young growth, so it is difficult to compare to most of what you see on the internet. The other compelling reason to believe it is E. ingens is that there simply weren't that many tree species available in Southern California when that tree was planted. Now, I understand that it is a botanical garden, so they might have gotten a more esoteric species, but I still think that E. ingens is more likely.

Well, as you can see, I've been a bit more tentative when it comes to surgery on Jade #1 as I've only done some minimal pruning as I cant 'see' what I'm aiming for so am scared of ruining the poor thing, does that make any sense? Are you suggesting that the branches till need shortening considerably. I wish I could see the vision of the end product, I really think I need to study to become a 'medium' and be able to see into the future, lol! I think the 2 new pics are from similar angles to the 2 in my OP to show what I've done so far. I welcome suggestions for me to consider for the next stage, so thanks in advance. Gill UK

Hi Max, Mind if you send me a picture of your pruned Jade? You can send it to my email address. I would love to see it. Thanks for the suggestion on removing the small shoots at the base, I wasn't sure if I wanted to keep those or not. Maybe I kept them because I had something to remind me of what the leaves used to look like, I'm actually just starting to see very tiny new leaves starting to emerge. Maybe when the leaves get a little bigger I might go ahead and cut the base shoots off. Appreciate you letting me know about the branches, this is all new to me.

Your Jade looks great! I love the look when the thick trunck grows new leaves - all fat and bushy. Here's one of my biggies a year or so after I whacked it...

Oh... Denise, your jade looks fabulous!!! I love that color! Is it 'Sunshine jade' or just the common one being exposed to sun? Beautiful, indeed.

Pug, please look closely at the two photos below. The red arrows indicate the "right" cuts, just a little bit above the nodes.
The blue arrow indicates a "wrong" cut and the brown arrow indicates a leaf already formed before I made the cutting. The second photo shows the difference in leaves formation. That's what I meant in the initial post.

Oh, and I left one leaf when whacking my jade because I wanted to see... some life on the plant while waiting for new leaves! It was just me... LOL!

Very good job pruning and documenting the process. They to tend to become overgrown, so it's nice to see that they can be cut back so they don't get too heavy.

It's so very helpful to have picture-sequences like this around...when trying to convince folks to whack their Jades!

I see what you mean about the cuts. I, too, prefer to cut a small ways above a node. I leave about 1/8 to 1/4 inch above the node, so that the stem can dry up, shrink, and fall off, leaving a "naturally callused" cut behind. Usually, a pair of new branches will appear - though sometimes just one branch will appear. I think we'll have to add some of this advice to Blutarski's Best Pruning Methods thread.
