first thing I would do is get some cuttings started, just in case.......

I live in a hot dry area, for me soils w/coir, peat, sand, perlite, styrofoam, etc. I try for an aerated soil that will stay slightly moist but drain well. I also use glazed pots because they hold in more moisture.

I have only read to divide the rootball with a sharp knife, allow to heal, then pot in a pot slightly bigger than the roots. Please let others verify this (or not).

For my environment they benefit from misting also. Your plant is a schlumbergera if you did not know yet.

When you trim your tips it makes for a fuller plant and most the time will get 2 or 3 new segments started growing on tips of segments you cut/trimmed.
Generally when you up pot you go up 2 inches in pot size.If I didn't grow mine in hanging baskets,I would use clay.I use a catus mix.I believe its skultz.

I'd like to disagree w/ above: generally when you pot up succulents, you pot up 1 size larger (not sure, but don't think that's 2 inches).

This also applies to Xmas cacti as they have smallish roots, don't need all that room & tend to like being underpotted (potted seemingly too small).

June, I hope I'm allowed to disagree with all of the above. These are not succulents.
They are jungle cactus called Epiphytic Cactus, they grow where they can in trees. I am quoting, in part, from the CSSA Journal December 2006. They need to be in hanging baskets. Soil can be changed if you insists, I find it hard to print the whole instructions here. It needs a fast draining mix with humus in it. Leaf mold, bark, and Med. size perlite for drainage. Keep the other junk out. Just add to your regular mix extra Leaf mold, or Orchid bark. It likes the same soil that Orchids grow in.
It likes an occasional feeding of Osmocote 14-14-14 after it flowers.
(Dec.Jan.) Apply 2-10-10 in Feb. or March. this will stimulate Spring flowers. Keep slighty damp and frequently misted until new growth forms within 6-8 weeks. Do not root in water! P.S. you may use an Epi mix as well. They grow in semi-shade, then they will flower. This was written by RW Kohlschreiber Christmas Cactus have reliable flowers in early January. They like to be crowded. Remember that they grow in trees in jungles, so they drain rapidly, they grow in tree/insect waste. No one transplants them in the wild. Norma you are 100% correct.I have followed all of the rules above and have had great success.2 years ago my mother in law gave me a big christmas cactus that she had in her living room.my wife had repotted it for her a short while ago and had it in a pot that was WAAAAAy too big. i brought it home potted in a smaller pot.the next winter it made one flower. i watered it thoughout the summer and this fall it had 50 or so flowers.they are totally diffrent then most cacti but when you care for them correctly the results are amazing
