Billbergia project - pls help with IDs

Working on a Billbergia educational display board, I went through my photos and culled some decent Billbergia photos. Problem: I don't have IDs for every photo. Can you help?

1) Well, I *think* this is a Billbergia. Hoping the distinctive coloring will make it easy to ID.

2) I'm guessing the plant on the right is B. 'Domingos Martins' -- agree? Disagree? But who is that on the left?

3) Ideas?

4) Is this one distinctive enough for a solid guess? It's in a fairly shady location...

5) I don't know why I end up with so many unlabeled plants. : ) Any guesses?

Catkim, I'm no expert on Billbergia's, but #1 looks an awful lot like Aech phanerophlebia rubra.

Kim, I'm with Japie on #1. Aechmea, not Bill.

#2 looks like Baton Rouge on the left and Domingos Martins on the right. #3 is probably Hallelujah. Not sure about #4, but #5 appears to be B. amoena Rubra.

I agree with everyone else that the tv over the fireplace might be too high. Someone said there are issues with ghost pictures and with heat from the fire. I would probably look into doing the entertainment wall where you have the armoire and use a tv stand with bookcases on either side. You could use baskets on the bookcase shelves, along with accents in whichever colors you choose. Because I've been there, done that, I suggest making sure the bookcases are attached to the wall in case a little one decides to climb them. :) As for your couch, if you like the bones of the couch, why not see about getting some foam inserts cut to replace the insides of the cushions? Also, most department stores sell slipcovers for couches. Wally world's quality isn't that great, but theirs run about $100 and they are washable. If you sew, it's fairly simple to make a slipcover yourself. I would probably look for furniture on Craig's List, especially the bookcases and tv stand. Even if the woods weren't exact matches, the price will be much less than buying new and paint covers multitudes of defects. Saving on the furniture would allow you to put a little more into the rugs and accessories, although I see rugs all the time on CL as well. Adding more greenery (I'm jealous of your green thumb!) and some accent pieces will make it feel more homey for now. As you add in the other things, slipcovers, rugs, bookcases, you will see it all come together. However, I don't think it looks bad right now, at all. Your home has a great layout; you have some really nice pieces in there, and everything isn't too matchy-matchy. I'd feel comfortable sitting on your couch or having a cup of coffee at the kitchen table. To me, that's the true test of a home. If I don't feel like I could touch anything in the house, I won't come back. I'd visit you more than once! :)

I got a body pillow at Wally World today for $8.88. (I could have sworn the tag below said they were $14 or something. I think the register made a mistake. I may have to go back and get two more for bolsters for the daybed and stuff them into a casing. They come in beige, blue, brown, green, and maybe gold. It pays to shop. I tried to find material to match the blue in my comforter, but didn't find that yet. Will keep looking. I did find a chenille throw in a similar color - which in a pinch I could use to cover the body pillow. red lover, I know what you mean about trying the stuff out and being able to see it in person. I have a new policy where I have an envelope in my purse which contains all the receipts for the last month or so from shopping for decorator items. You wouldn't believe how much stuff I have returned. I also returned a bunch of molding pieces to HD and Lowes I wasn't going to use and I got a ton of money back - molding is very expensive because they sell it by the foot. Some I get credit for because I returned stuff I couldn't find the receipt for, but I knew I would be buying more stuff there anyway and the gift cards they give you if you don't have the receipt, really help out. red lover, you are so right about getting stuff in person. There are so many diffeent colors out there - greens can be shade off and they still match, but it seems like the blues can really clash. Thanks for your advice. I don't know what to tell you about the comforter you have - unless you can go to a discount fabric place and cover it with something you like? Some stuff is not very well made these days. But even if you can sew, any fabric purchased is more money than you can buy things already made for - so it's a catch 22.

The panel, bead to bead is just a tad over 16" wide. Yes stiles? (the space in between the beaded panels) is about 1.5". The (fluted) column width is 4" wide. I only added the fluted columns to island (after working w/ designer) since I had 1 fluted column in a clipped corner. It looked a bit lonely in the kitchen. Three fluted columns looked intentional; one looked like a mistake. Just my non-design opinion. It's kinda like the symmetry thing to me. I have 3 entrances/exits in small kitchen. You see the fluted columns when you enter via 2 of the entrances. My hood is a 36" by modernaire. Height is about 21". 34" off the countertop. We didn't want hood too high that it became ineffective, but did not want DH to bump his head. I notice Trevor Lawson has been on lately; he handles all Internet sales of the hood. I got the hood and exhaust guts thru him.

Sorry for the mix-up, pepper. I guess I think of "adjacent" as having a corner between the sink and range, and "next to" on the same straight counter run. I think it would be very convenient to have one just around the corner from the other as it would only require a couple of steps from one to the other, as long as there's enough prep room. I was so disappointed to have to stop the project, just after the plans were basically finished and just before we signed with a contractor, that I put everything dealing with plans into a box in the garage. Therefore, I'll have to rely on my memory-- uh-oh! I considered the possibility of adding a lowered section onto the island to serve as a kitchen table, as I don't care for island seating. In that way I thought I could use the current nook space in some capacity, but because it bumps out from the other wall and has a window, I realized that I wouldn't be able to put a longed-for hutch there (close to dw,) nor the fridge, which would have freed up space elsewhere. If I brought the opening to the entry closer to the sink wall, I could reconfigure on the other side of the door, but that would force me to use a prep sink, which I'm not sure I want to do, as well as have the traffic flow take a turn. Right now, my galley kitchen has the sink and stovetop separated by the doorway which means traffic is constantly in my way when I'm cooking. So, back I went to the original plan. My restrictions that force me back are: --Sink under the window (I get so bored too!) --Stovetop or range close-ish to sink and not on island, due to my messy (Indian) cooking style. --Traffic out of my way while cooking! --A separate kitchen table (I just feel more comfortable with this.) --Still can't decide whether a prep sink will be helpful to me --Enclosed kitchen, meaning not open to the family room because of forementioned messy cooking. --Hope to have a raised dw due to back problems, but probably no room for a counter between it and the sink. This is what led me to consider using the nook space for more counter space and/or hutch. My traffic flow goes from what would be your dining room/living room door to family room (almost same location for me.) We intend to move a door that is currently near the table that leads to the garage, to the family room instead. What is your doorway to the basement, study, etc. is mine into the dining area; (it's too small to be called a proper dining room--I'm in a ranch in No. Cal.) You have more space than I will (someday!) but mine will also be mostly a square with the same doorway locations. Those doorways dictate quite a lot! Hope I didn't go too off-topic.

Number 2 on the left looks very much like a plant I have called Billbergia Kip when grown in strong light.

#4 kinda looks 'Pink Champagne'-ish to me. Well, at least what I have that is labeled Pink Champagne.

I realize there are many reddish, spotted Billbergia hybrids, and identification may be impossible. Amoena var. viridis has banding on the lower reverse of the leaves, and Pink Champagned seems to have more recurved leaves than my plant.... but they're both *close*! ; ) Anyone think it could be 'Pink Blush'? It's got to be something common that's been around a long time, and likely with amoena in the parentage. Any other guesses?

Nev, I find hardly any reference to Bill. Kip on the web, and the few notes I find have no photos, and all are in Queensland. Maybe Kip is one they never let out of Australia? Chances are my bills are very common types easily found in these parts, but thanks for trying. : )

I found a photo on the BirdRock site of B. amoena var. amoena that ooks to me like a dead ringer for #5. What do you think, Lisa?

If we're looking at the same picture, Kim, I think that is B. Ed Macwilliams, which is a form of amoena v. amoena. It is very similar in appearance to amoena rubra, however. Both are stoloniferous and have similar-looking blooms. The difference is that grown side-by-side under the same conditions, Ed M will have more intensely saturated color and a more open rosette with long arching leaves. It's also a bit touchier. The leaves seem to like to curl and die back, and it has a tendency to abort its flowers before they mature, I'm not sure why.

The upright form and slightly mottled coloration of your #5 is more typical of amoena rubra. I'm not sure if this is a valid variety or cv. name, as it doesn't seem to be represented in the FCBS photo index, but it is widely recognized. We've had several discussions about this here, but I got mine from Don Beadle under that name, and if it's good enough for Don, it's good enough for me! ;-)

I think you are right about #4 having a strong amoena connection too. I don't have amoena v. viridis, so I can't say for sure whether Gonzer is right or wrong, but I see what you mean about the lack of silver banding as compared to the index photo. I do know Pink Champagne, however, and that definitely ain't it.

Kim, here are two viridis, the first grown in high light/full sun and the other East facing. The last is one of my Champagnes grown in FS. Lisa's correct...no way.

Wow, thanks Lisa and Gonzer! Your rubra vs amoena explanation works for me, and Gonzer, that first photo is a twin of my #4 Bill with that old vinegar color and no banding. : ) It's good to be able to get help from the bromeliad plant masters here.

The several other Billbergia pics I'll be using are thankfully of labeled plants, no more mysteries. Some of these things are darn hard to photograph, too, vases jutting out in strange directions like antlers. It must be time to do some dividing in the garden... Thanks again.

Excellent photos for educational purposes. Mark me educated! So Pink Champagne can take a lot of sun to get those nicely curled leaves? I love all that I learn from everyone on this forum. I'll just have to keep my ID guesses to myself unless I KNOW the plant (and then really hope I'm not still wrong--ha ha). Those viridis are great looking plants. Certainly can't overlook species and only focus on hybrids!
