Gots me some new seeds in the mail!

Hi All!

I opened the mail box today and saw a familiar envelope. New seeds have arrived! I'm still new at growing from seed, and running out of room quickly, just can't help myself some times. This time I got:

Cereus peruvianus monstrosus
An Escobaria species mix
Faucaria subintegra
& Huernia zebrina

Now before I get too excited and throw them in some mix and pray, does anyone have any advice or pointers on how to get these guys started the right way. I have done some research, but I'd love to hear what some more experienced growers know.

Hey A!

I'm not experienced with cacti but I think springtime is best for sowing many varieties.

You can sow Faucaria in late Spring also if you can keep it cool and semi-shaded during the Summer, otherwise late August/early September is a good time to sow Mesembs depending on when the cold sets in.

The best time to sow your Huernia is probably after the hottest part of summer and make sure to use a slightly grittier soil mix. They like bright light and heat but not full, direct sun. They are very prone to damp off.

I don't know your zone but I grow in a climate that doesn't freeze or get extremely hot.

How soon do you need them? If you can wait a bit, I'd be happy to send you some extras for photography! Tammypie, I've had retusa for a while now. Love it. And cummingiana is on it's way. :) I've developed my own rooting methods over the last few years that seem to work well in my climate. Baggies and aquariums do NOT work well here (I found out the hard way). :( But, live and learn! Mike, aldrichii is one that's been in my collection for over a year. My rooted piece is alive, but just not doing much of anything. Just wanted to add a bit to it from a different location to see if it would acclimate faster. I remain a skeptic on the raised tile over a range, from a grease cleaning perspective. I'm not a fan of that last tile anyway, it's a little too organic in the Gaudi kind of way. JMO. As to what I was thinking when I said herringbone, I was honestly not sure. I just threw it out there with no real thought behind it. Herringbone brick uses 2 bricks, right? Two going one way, two going the other? Google herringbone subway tile or subway tile patterns and I bet you get some hits. Honestly, though, I'm probably getting too cute here. If it's hard to envision, it's probably a bad idea. Deb PS - Maybe it would help to get a better handle on the goal here...is it to add color, or texture, or shine, or...what?
