Baltimore Checkerspot Talk

Hi all,

Coming out of hibernation here in MD with a couple of back-to-back days in the 50s.

I went to a great talk on Saturday about Baltimore Checkerspots (E. phaeton) ... there's a pretty active conservation program going on here.

Anyways, there were some points of interest:

(1) The BCs down here do *not* eat English Plantain, but only White Turtlehead.

(2) The former wisdom was that the BC was moving north because of climate change. Then, 2 years ago, they found a colony in south-central MD that's leading to a hunt for more.

(3) The people leading the conservation program are looking for volunteers in the Montgomery Co. area to look through wetlands for more colonies. They're also promoting the planting of White Turtlehead (Chelone glabras) in wet, sunny areas.

Happy Gardening!

Jeff
