Royal Colors - the Rascal Series

Hello Folks,

Has anyone ordered/pre-ordered Bordeaux Rascal or any other Rascal for that matter from Royal Colors. A while ago I saw a post in the forum about Orange Rascal and after doing a Google search on it I decided I need to get this cutie in my collection as well as Bordeaux Rascal. Lemme know what y'all think.

Hi Fred,

A few years ago, I ordered 'Orange Rascal' from another company. Before the order was shipped, there was an unfortunate crop failure, and a substituation of unlabeled sonatinis from the breeder was sent. I remember that one is yellow, another is wine colored, one is a double white, and another is an attractive pink. I haven't seen 'Orange Rascal' offered anywhere since then.

Last year, I ordered several 'Bordeaux Rascal' bulbs from RC. Apparently there was a mix-up because I received 'Balentino' instead, which I already had. It looks like many other folks got this mislabel too. Hopefully, we will have better luck this year.

Hola Blanca,

So did the replacement sonatini's behave as advertised? Did they keep their cute mini demeanor? I was looking at Bordeaux rascal and I think the color is absolutely stunning. I'm thinking of hydridizing it with some of the smaller growing species to breed for the smaller growing feature.

Once again, my propensity to act like a complete blonde is showing! Doh! I must make a correction... Royal Colors DOES have a proper picture of Supreme Garden on their website! I just couldn't see it clearly because I have poor vision! Yes, it's true... I'm getting older and my body is slowly failing me, part by part... I'm getting more blind as time goes by... and apparently deaf, as well! Larry says I shout when I talk, and I keep the television volume up way too high! I rather thought I was too young to have these things happen, but I keep forgetting that I have Lupus to help push me into old age before my time! Oh well... it was bound to happen sooner or later... the next picture you see of me will contain a pair of bifocals hanging around my neck, suspended from a lovely beaded cord! My Lovely Garden is blooming right now, and my unknown Garden is in full bud... pictures will be forthcoming as the flowers open! Sorry folks... I'm half blind and losing my mind... not the best things to have happen at the same time! :-)

Josh thanks for these tips. I am a novice through and through and all advise is highly appreciated and warmly accepted. I had it, or actually it's roots to be precise, in warm water for a few hours to encourage new root formation; I also cleaned the basal plate from old roots and dead layer before potting it. Also I tried to make as airy of a potting mix as I could. So 'Helios' is a picky one... 'Germa' I knew about, but very unlikely to come across that treasure. Hopefully me and Helios would hit it off, I really love the shape of the flower and the color of course. - Leena

Devonfawn, Sometimes people (Danny did it this time) post an unrelated question on the end of a different thread and most people don't even see it. I happened to see Danny's question that was totally unrelated to what the thread was about, and so I answered. The point is that the some of the people who posted on the thread about the near black mini hippies haven't posted in a month of Sundays..so you may not get an answer to your question... you can keep checking though if you want..you never know... Posting an unrelated question on the end of an unrelated topic is NOT a cardinal sin.. but, to resurrect a thread that has been buried for some time is asking for nobody to see your question.. The moral of this story is don't be afraid to start a new topic for a question otherwise most people won't get the gist of what it's about and never see the question and hence, no answer. For some reason folks seem afraid to post new threads..most of us are guilty of this from time to time, myself included... (not to pick on you Danny of course) ;-) Hope someone answers your question...I'd be interested to know too..... Donna

UPDATE!! If anyone still cares, I may have found a source for the "Orange Rascal"....in the USA. As my searching continued, I came across a posting, that listed the varieties of Hipps. within the Brecks, Hardy Amaryllis Mixture, (5 bulbs) (SKU#73695): Balentino/Valentino...Helios...Candy...Swan Lake.....and, drum-roll please,..Dah Da!!! "ORANGE RASCAL". (I came across this information doing a search for "Sonatini Hippeastrum Valentino"). This collection is/was $39.99 and may be available come Spring '12. I wonder if the same varieties will still comprise this mixture, because I will be essentially paying 40 bucks plus shipping, for one stinkin' bulb. Pretty pricey! By the way, when I called Brecks and asked them just WHAT varieties were within their "hardy" Amaryllis Mixture, they had no clue. Great record keeping! My searching would have ended at this point if only Brecks knew what they were selling. The end. Frank

Hola Fred,

All the sonatinis (both from Hadeco in South Africa and those produced by Dutch breeders) have maintained their sweet, diminutive size and attributes.

Years ago, when many of us desired these small jewels and they were unavailable to us, we started to attempt to create our own.

I wish you the best of luck with your hybridization plans.

Hi Fred,
I ordered two types of Sonatinis last season, Helios and Bordeaux Rascal. BR turned out to be Balentino. But as stated above this happened to others too, for example to Mr. Emaryllis (www.emaryllis.com)...

Flowers were lovely but I was very disappointed with the leaves, they were floppy giving the plant an untidy look. I grow my hippies inside the house, maybe these Sonatinis would perform better grown outside, but then, I do have many hippies with excellent foliage so I think it's strait-connected. But the flowers were indeed sweet and lovely and I'm definitely keeping them both...

Hi Blanca & Lenanen,

Thank you for your feedback and stay tuned. As my sonatini's and species hippies flower, I will be saving their pollen and storing it in labeled gelatin caps and in the fridge for later use. I have used this storage method for Clivia pollen and it seems to have worked in the past. So, it may take a while but I'm patient and I would be more than happy to share my progeny with the group.
