'Helios' from Royal Colors

Hi everyone and thanks for a great forum. I've been reading posts and threads for some time now and learnt a lot from you guys.

Found Royal Colors a while ago, impressive selection.

I sent in an order immediately when I noticed they had Sonatinis 'Helios' and 'Bordeaux Rascal' for sale. My order was shipped on Friday the 13th and received it the following Friday. Talk about fast!

The bulbs were in great condition and bigger than I expected. Here is a bulb of 'Helios' in the winter light waiting to be potted.

Hi Lenanen and welcome to the forum! Nice to see you can post pictures..please try to show us your pictures as they grow and bloom, we all would love to see them!

Donna hi and thanks! This is such a nice forum bursting with knowledge and warm humor, really like it here. And I share the passion for photos, I love seeing lots of them posted here.

I promise, there will be pictures of both 'Helios' and 'Bordeaux Rascal' as they develop and - hopefully - bloom.

I wintersowed these last year and according to my journal, they were planted in the ground April 22 and started blooming May 25. Mine needed lots of water to get established after transplanting them. They would look really wilted every afternoon, but the next morning they would look fine. They are really pretty, but they did not like the extremely hot summer we had in Alabama last year, they should do well for you. Donna

Alana, Brecks does still have them, I just ordered them for the 2011 spring season. Royal Colors also calls these Sonatinis hardy, they stated on their facebook they're hardy to -10 degrees Celsius. If you plant them a good 5 inches down I think they'd be okay. I've got a lot of bulbs from Lowe's that I'm going to plant out in a very protected spot this spring. Supposedly 'Apple Blossom' is incredibly hardy too! I know of a few people in zone 6 that overwinter Hippeastrum xjohnsonii and it successfully flowers every year! Josh

Jokik, Anna and Mariava: Thanks for the encouraging information. I guess because I had problems the first time I had been leery about ordering again. Question: did the package come from the postal company or some courier? Did you have to pay any extra duty etc etc after the package arrived? The reason I'm asking is because if it is the postal company that delivers and there is NO extra charge, the package will be waiting for me in the office of the apartment building I live in...nice and warm! If there is extra money to be paid on duty etc etc then I know the package will be waiting down the street at a postal outlet. Again..it'll be in a warm spot. Was the package marked clearly enough "Protect From Freezing"? I'm concerned about the Canada Post or the courier company not paying attention to that and leaving the package in an unheated truck or van etc. I trust your judgment with this and agree that Royal Colors has been exemplary in their customer service AND that there are things out of their control. One of which would be what the postal/courier companies at this end do with the packages. How could they be faulted for that. Still, I would want a way to be able to track down the responsible parties involved in my bulbs arriving in a state other than what they left Royal Colors (which of course would be nothing short of healthy). Thanks again for your information and advice gals. P.S.: My large Furore that I bought this year, is gonna be in bloom in a few days (Maybe a week or so) and I can't wait to get pics of it and get em up on this site. Cheers, Gerard.

I think this is my RH. Hasn't been a very strong flower producer for me. I moved it to another location with more late morning until late afternoon sun so lets see what happens now.

Leena,

Plant 'Helios' immediately and give it warmth and water (not too much), 'Helios' is very picky and I noticed in the past it will not bloom if in dormancy too long without the correct conditions.

I can't wait to see your pictures ;)

Josh thanks for these tips. I am a novice through and through and all advise is highly appreciated and warmly accepted.

I had it, or actually it's roots to be precise, in warm water for a few hours to encourage new root formation; I also cleaned the basal plate from old roots and dead layer before potting it. Also I tried to make as airy of a potting mix as I could.

So 'Helios' is a picky one... 'Germa' I knew about, but very unlikely to come across that treasure.

Hopefully me and Helios would hit it off, I really love the shape of the flower and the color of course.

She is truly lovely, there's something in her that reminds me of 'Jewel', one of my favourites also.

I'll be taking more pictures during the weekend...

W0w, you got results fast! My Helios and Bordeaux look just like when they arrived. I Hope they are putting down roots now.

Hi Lizalily! :D

Don't despair, everything will turn out just fine. My Bordeaux scape is approx. 10 centimeters now, about 4 inches.

I ordered 1 package of both (3bulbs in a package), and only one bulb out of three has produced a flower scape. The other two are producing leaves and getting fat :D

bet you can guess what I'm praying for, that that yellowish-greenish shape in the background of the picture would be... G... but it isn't, think it's 'Evergreen' (not bad...) :D

In reality the color is true yellow and a beautiful shade of yellow at that, just didn't get it right in the picture.
