Id needed for this caterpillar please - pics

Hi all,

I saw this caterpillar on a vine today, hope someone can ID it for me please, thanks.

The caterpillar is blurry, so it's hard for me to tell, but it looks to be burgundy with white spines.
I'm not familiar with tropical caterpillars, but it looks similar to our native stinging rose caterpillar/Parasa indetermina or possibly one of the tussock/tiger moths, of which there are MANY!! By the small size, it's more likely to be in the stinging caterpillar group, which means, don't touch it!
Either way, it'll become a moth.

I think what you're dealing with are Pear Slugs, which may or may not be what Beeman mentioned above. I used to see them on my pear trees and would just squish 'em when I found them. I don't see them anymore. In small numbers they didn't seem to do much damage, just mining the leaf surfaces here and there. They are a serious pear pest though in other parts of the country. Fits the description of many leaf rollers, common pest of lots of different fruits and veggies (and ornamentals, etc.). They probably won't stay very small for very long.

Thanks treefrog. :-) I believe you are correct from the description I found. The tomato hornworm doesn't have any alternate descriptions of being black with long stripes going down its back. I'll look into the Bt tomorrow after work. I don't want to lose this batch of maters. It's one of the best batches I've had from my plantings so far.
