ID help please

I picked up these guys at the depot yesterday... they looked interesting. Any ideas of what they are and how to care for it? thank you

first is a few inches tall and second is about 5 inches

Oh I love that second one! That looks like a cactus that has mostrose and cresting. Very nice find!! I dont know what kind it is though.

yea the second one is prob. crested looks a bit like Neobuxbaumia euphorbioides cristata heres a pic of it.

Hi Rina, true. I just found some info that supports my original thought on it's Id. And a pic too.... This info is from Arid Lands greenhouses... Scilla paucifolia ""This species, from the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, is a small bulb with beautifully marked leaves. Although some would lump this with Ledebouria socialis, this is a completely different species. These plants are rooted offsets in 4-inch pots.""

Thanks for responding! No, I don't think they were local. I usually got most of my roses from Heirloom, ARE, and one other whose name I can't recall. These two particular roses may have come from elsewhere, since I was looking for specific names, but I just don't remember. However, you've reminded me that somewhere I did keep some records.... if I can only find that notebook.... LOL it was about 25 years ago but I bet that notebook is around here somewhere. Although I'm not sure that will help me assign which name to which rose, but it's a start. Thank you! :) Dee

"Maybe it's not planted in the right location?" Always possible :-) Unless a dwarf form, these get a lot bigger than might be expected. But it can be pruned....just that now is not a good time to do so. Wait until late winter or very early next spring. And don't cut back into bare wood.

Could be Trichocereus spachiana, Cereus peruvianus and a Pilosocereus (azureus?), But I have been wrong before...

I'd say the first is Tephrocactus articulatus and that the second is a creseted, monstrose, Cereus peruvianus.

I agree with Joscience, but note that there are several variants of T. articulatus. This one is Tephrocactus articulatus var. papyracanthus

Segments break off easily. Standard cactus care. It's an Opuntiod: Beware the glochids!

And keep the infection on some tips of the monstrous Cereus peruvianus under control!

Treat by cutting out all dark colored tissue, and dust with a fungicide like garden sulfur.

oh wow... i didnt realize. just picked this up cuz i thought it looked interesting...i will try and clear out the infected area.

BUT IT'S THE FUNGUS THAT MAKES THE CRESTED FORM! If you 'cure' the fungus, your plant will revert to the standard form. ALLOW the fungus, your plant will grow more gnarly.

Hey I finally found a non-surfing use for the word 'gnarly'.

No, cacti don't need potentially lethal fungal/bacterial infections to become crested and/or monstrose ...

There was a small fungus on the top of this baby Euphorbia ammak when it was only a few inches tall (sorry no photo of the fungus). I let it dry out but other than that I didn't do anything to 'fix the problem'. Now I have an interesting new growth. Many new branches and maybe a cristate branch. Normally these get a few feet tall before any branching occurs. Granted there is no more fungus, but I am convinced it was the cause of all this excessive branching.

Yes, the abnormal growth can be a result of the infection, especially if the growing point was damaged (looks like it) but it is (fortunately) not needed to sustain it.

I have the first one and it is very easy to propergrate, but be very careful of the prickles, they stick in your skin about 10 at a time I just hold my finger up to the natural light and pick them out before they go too far in. Everyone will want one of thoes when they see them.

The Paper Spined Cactus, Tephrocactus articulatus var. papyracanthus is a cool plant but is so small. I have a couple and they grow very slowly. Love the grey-green colour though.

On the Cereus, I would be afraid to lose the plant if I left the infection unchecked. If it were my plant i would cut it out as soon as I noticed it. Just my opinion.
