Hi, I am from Ohio near Cincinnati. I think my zone is 6, but I have been looking for plants that are 5 because we have such fluctation from winter to winter. Finances are limited for me, so seeds will be mainly the way I go. I have never winter sown before, when I sowed seeds last spring I direct sowed. But when Bakemom contacted me about the seeds she talked me into trying it next spring so I have been looking for and saving containers. Undoubtably I will be in here asking questions in the future.

I'm in central Mass, about 30 miles west of Boston. Thanks to some odd town planning, if I go in my backyard, I'm in Worcester. My front yard is in Auburn, the side yard is Milbury....go figure. :) I've been winter sowing for four or five years, but last year I had to cut back, since I can't possibly stuff any more plants in the garden. Doesn't mean I'm not gonna' try, though. ;)

I'm in lower west Manhattan, New York City. So PV your advice has already helped me. It has been great getting ideas from people here. Thanks to trudi (I grew up in West Hempstead... not far from East Meadow) I got started on Wintersowing and in one year I more than doubled the variety of plants in my little corner of the city.

I'm just 15 miles/minutes North of Minneapolis MN, which makes me a zone 4 at home. The cabin is about 70 miles further north from home which makes me a zone 3 up at the lake.

West Michigan here, north of GR. Zone 5b, but I live atop a hill, w/ no trees to protect from the wind. Full sun, everywhere! I have the crappiest soil, sand on top of clay! You'd think I could just dig and mix it up to make good. Unfortunantly, no trees, little grass, so not much organic matter to add naturally LOL! I live amongst hundreds of acres of apple orchards. My 1.5 acre is backed up to an 80 acre orchard plot. But those trees are all down hill.

I'm in central Oklahoma, on the east side of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. Somehow red clay eludes me. I'm in sand, with trees. Save for the heat and drought, it's not exactly typical Oklahoma gardening.

I'm waiting on Donn to tell us what GSB stands for.

Hey! Some of y'all are missing the point--now, please alter your zone/location line so we ALWAYS know more about where you're located.

My part of Northern Indiana is called "Illiana," and I'm probably 2 hours from Etravia. Sometimes, I'm 2 hours from Pitimpinai, too! (Oh, the Dan Ryan and the Kennedy!)

I just read Bakemom's posting about "where you are from". It really helps to add, in beside your zone, your state, or city or town so we remember on each posting.

I'm in Atlanta, center of heat and drought. Still 85, one day of rain a month around here. Complete watering ban except for food gardens. They are thinking of now rationing our water use in the home.

I may not be doing much winter sowing this winter.

I guess you could say I'm in zone "WHINEY GARDENER".

Hey, sewobsessed and shimla, we might be neighbors! I live in Upstate NY too (for other GW members: my area is called the Southern Tier of NY, just above the NY/PA border), just west of Binghamton, down by the Susquehanna River. My suburban yard is a study in microclimates, from dry shade to hot full sun, and several variations in between. I'm blessed with sandy loam, which is great. Some years we get a zone 4 winter, but most of the time I'm in a solid zone 5. Snow cover is NOT consistent for us, unfortunately. Winter sowing has been a fantastic money saver for me, and great fun therapy over the past three winters.

Hey Laurelin, my folks are up that way. They had a motel but it got ruined in those floods about a year and a half ago.
I'm trying to get my mom interested in ws, but so far she's only dabbling a bit in gardening so far. she lost a lot of bulbs in the flood too.

Hi I am in the Panhandle of Florida, known to the locals as "L.A.", (Lower Alabama.) Pensacola, to be exact. We are about 17 inches short on rainfall this year...luckily my butterflies like the native plants cause if it had to be watered regularly this summer it didnt make it! For non natives, Zinnias are my new favorites got some that have been blooming for 4 months now, just keep deadheading....thank goodness for ws, still have 'filler' plants in my pot ghetto when plants in the garden give out...had monarch, tiger swallowtail, cloudless sulfer butterflies chowing down in the garden today, have to keep 'em fed!

Ok...my zone says 7 yet I am in SE TN. About 30 miles from NC and GA. LOL I don't know about wintersowing this year as lot's of wells have gone dry here. :(

This thread was a great reminder for me to change my location. I moved from Houston, TX to Connecticut about two years ago but just moved into a house this month so I've been browsing the forums regularly again.

Hi everyone! I am new to w/s, this will be my 1st year (I am also new to gardening in general). I live in Eastern Iowa, near the Mississippi. I moved here from Illinois about 3 years ago after my husband and I bought our 1st house. It took me a little while, but I finally decided to start gardening. Now I have my own yard to dig up! Northwest side of Chicago near the I94-I90 very close to O'Hare airport. Supposed to be zone 5, but we have not seen the temp drop near -20F for at least 20 years particularly in this part of town.

It's been quite a while since I've posted, thought I might as well jump in here - I'm in Central Kentucky, sort of between Lexington and Cincinnati, Ohio, but off the beaten track a bit.

I can't wait to start wintersowing again! I didn't get ANY gardening done this year, had only about 11 containers WSed, and they're still out there. :( But this time around, I'm trying to do things the SMART way (ha ha!), by getting beds ready now for next year.

We had a late hard freeze and then drought, as well, and almost everything died. It's finally been raining this week, and it feels like spring because of it. New green grass, singing birds, etc.

Already digging through my seed boxes and collecting jugs...

This will be my first attempt at WS. I've gotten so much help from GW with plants that I've decided to try seeds!! I've got the seeds, now just gotta get over the stage fright :)

Rutherfordton, NC, Rutherford County in Western NC, a large county, I'm closer to SC line than Lake Lure, Blue Ridge Mtns, etc . . . yet only about 40 minutes from Asheville, NC, and 40 minutes from Spartanburg, SC -- have to love new Interstates!
Live on 2 acres, half wooded (sourwoods, oaks, maples, dogwoods), in a very tiny community of 2 streets, we have an Association with few rules, one is not to cut down any trees unless they put your home in danger (we are permitted a yard, gardens, etc . . but not massive amounts of trees cut down because of erosion and we like look and feel of woods). We keep our dues extremely low because we all pitch in -- cut grass, plant garden front entrance, etc . . . our 2 roads (actually goes by number of homes on streets) are not enough for NC to takeover road work and after couple new homes built in last few years (heavy equipment) the asphalt has cracks, etc . . . if a hard winter comes . . .

Those floods came too close for comfort to us - into the edge of our yard, to be precise. The bottom of our neighborhood was devastated, and most of the houses there have been torn down now. So sad. I hope your parents are okay after losing their motel.

I'm about an hour from Chicago in Long Grove zone5, but not for long as we just bought a new house in a Del Web community in Mundelein Il. They will do all the lawn maintenance but will leave some beds for me to fill in. In addition I will have a huge deck for all kinds of pots. Any suggestions?

If you guys wanted to edit your information, here is how to do it:
Find your post above and click on "(My Page)".
Look at the bottom of your screen, where the GardenWeb banner is and click on the "Member Pages" over on the right.
This is the place you can make all changes to your user id including trade lists and such.
Select "Edit your personal information, page and preferences" for location changes.
Sign back in with your password if it asks for that info.
That will get you to the area where you can make any needed changes that you'd like to save.
In the "zone" box is where I recorded "5 Upstate, NY"
Incidentally, when I come in to post, the "zone" box is also open for me to make changes but I'm not sure if the system will save the changes from here.
