Winter sowing vegetables zone 5 PA??

Hello, I am so very excited to learn about this form of gardening. It is all new to me so bear with me if my questions seem funny. I have very little space to start seeds indoors, barely any because of poor light but this way of gardening seems great. Starting seeds myself would save so much money and better than that I can get whatever I want and start it myself instead of buying transplants. I am just very curious how much of it can be started as far as vegetables with success?? I am in PA zone 5 and was wanting to hear what would work and what wouldn't. Thanks for any info.

Rebecca, welcome to the Wintersowing forum! I'm in zone 5 too, and wintersowing has allowed me to grow much more from seed than I could before, since I simply don't have the space indoors.

Here are the vegetables that I have wintersown:

Lettuce
Spinach
Swiss Chard
Broccoli
Peas
Tomatoes

Cucumbers and canteloupes I did using the wintersowing method, but in late May

Herbs - basil (late April), dill, lavender, marjoram, oregano, parsley, perilla, rosemary, sage, spearmint

Really about the only things that I don't wintersow for the garden, are carrots, since they don't always transplant well, and peppers, because our growing season is just too short to do them that way.

I've included a link to Wintersown.org's list of vegetables for wintersowing, which may help as well.

Start saving those containers, and buy plenty of potting mix before winter gets here!

Yes, rodents can be a problem, but there has to be food nearby or they will not thrive. In my case there is food nearby, vegetables under hoop houses. What I do is add mulch as late as possible, Thanksgiving week end, when they have already settled elsewhere for the winter. In the spring, adding compost on top is the norm, no problem there.

Winter Sowing Annuals in Zone 5

laurelin, where do you normally get the white heliotrope? I didn't find any last year around here. You can email me off line or post here. Like laurelin, I normally do my annuals in early to mid March. Last year I did petunias, alyssum, godetia, marigolds, celosia, calendula, salvia, lobelia, hyacinth bean, and amaranthus with great success. I tried heliotrope last year but they didn't start to bloom until the end of the season so I will start mine inside real soon. I think it's good to experiment - I've tried almost all my hardy annuals in Jan and Feb and had success and some not. I just find it easier to do the annuals in March since I'm doing perennials earlier and feel I'm guaranteed to have success with the annuals when wintersown in March. Last year I did not buy any annuals except for Proven Winners Diascia 'Flying Colors Coral'. I still plan to purchase this since I can't find these seeds (not sure there is). However I am wintersowing a few other types of diascia - I hope it works since it's my all time favorite annual(tender perennial)! :)

Hi there, I am new to WS this year, and I am still sowing in zone 5 in Northeast Wisconsin. I have read that it is better to wait until around now for annuals because the seedlings are more tender. (It just snowed all day today, and I brought in some marigolds and snapdragons that started sprouting.) In the FAQ in this forum there is a link for Spring and Summer Sowing.
