Hi I think the reply from Cyus_Gardener was a bit too general, or too broad. If you leave your plants in the ground until they seed, some of those seed will drop and reseed themselves. Some seeds benefit from freezing, others do not. Winter Sowing, done in this group is done in containers. Milk Jugs. You can check the FAQ's for more information. If you are choosing to sow your seed directly into the ground remember that you are going to get not just the flower seeds that have dropped at the end of last season, but also a lot of weed seeds. The Winter Sowing that worked good for me was done in milk jugs. I also sowed some seeds in clear plastic containers and drilled vent holes on the top. I think I said I wasn't going to Spring Sow anything, but guess what. I did. Today. Not anything "special" like I did last year (the Gardenia and the Bay Laurel, which are still alive and doing well as of this typing). Today I Spring Sowed: Missouri Primrose (because I think DH may have hacked up what was already there with the tiller). Bachelor Buttons "Black Ball" (just in case the ones in my Black and White garden don't reseed...yeah...right) Scarlet Flax (it's red, it's annual...I need some red fillers for the beds. Also hoping it will reseed). Calendula "Pacific Apricot Beauty". Because of the name. And it's Calendula. I might do another Datura (Yellow Angel's Trumpet). But I can't decide. Maybe tomorrow. Rebecca, welcome to the Wintersowing forum! I'm in zone 5 too, and wintersowing has allowed me to grow much more from seed than I could before, since I simply don't have the space indoors. Here are the vegetables that I have wintersown: Lettuce Spinach Swiss Chard Broccoli Peas Tomatoes Cucumbers and canteloupes I did using the wintersowing method, but in late May Herbs - basil (late April), dill, lavender, marjoram, oregano, parsley, perilla, rosemary, sage, spearmint Really about the only things that I don't wintersow for the garden, are carrots, since they don't always transplant well, and peppers, because our growing season is just too short to do them that way. I've included a link to Wintersown.org's list of vegetables for wintersowing, which may help as well. Start saving those containers, and buy plenty of potting mix before winter gets here!
