Larkspur in zone 5 winter spring sowing

I've had some amazing standings of larkspur- mostly volunteer descendants of a the few I started indoors in peat pots. I lost all of them when during one fall they grew too vigorously only to be destroyed in the winter. Totally destroyed!

I want to establish this standing again and a have purchased about 2000 seeds. So what is your best advice for ZONE 5? I don't want to hear from anyone concerning zones 6, 7,and 8.

I am really bad with peat pots! So I intend to direct sow.

What I do know is to

1.stratify is a slightly humid cool condition about two

weeks

2. Warm temperatures can trigger dormancy

3. 50 F-70F for germination

4. darkness- so cover seeds
