What's in bloom on 9-10-08 (heavy on the pics)

I haven't posted much on this forum lately, but we finally had an overcast day, and I was able to get a few pictures.

First off, the wintersown 'Profusion Apricot' Zinnias

What is up with the bloom color? The first picture is an early bloom.

Wintersown Portulaca 'Mango'

Dianthus 'Ideal Select Red'. This one was wintersown from seeds harvested from plants purchased last year, and it's a hybrid, so I wasn't sure if it would bloom true to color, but it is identical to the other plants... yippee!

Salvia 'Lady in Red'. Good thing I took this picture when I did. We had a storm blow through last night, and the stems were broken off at the base. The break almost looked too clean though, so it could have been cutworm damage.

Herb bed, most of which was wintersown

Agastache 'Apache Sunset' (not wintersown) with a hummingbird. I don't know how some of you get such clear pictures of hummers. They move so fast, all of my photos end up blurry.

Solidago 'Fireworks' with Coreopsis 'Sunburst' and a bumble bee who appeared drowsy or drunk

Gaillardia 'Oranges & Lemons'. Okay, not wintersown, but it's one of my favorites, and I have a question about it. I saw what looked like a regular honeybee take a big chunk out of a petal and fly away. What are they doing that for? Almost all of my flowers have big chunks of petals missing!

Gorgeous! Just gorgeous! I so enjoyed looking at your photos and the herb bed is great. Love the Solidago Fireworks. Nice plant! Oh, gosh, they all are. :O)

Bonnie - Your gardens are beautiful! I love the herb garden and really like your hummer picture. You caught one - I've never been able to!

Your profusion apricot zinnias are great too. I grew some from GW trade seed this year and it's truly been one of my favorites!

What's that paired with the Dianthus Ideal Select Red? I love the misty color.

to answer some questions-pulsatilla is on last picture. I found it strange germinator- sometimes it is just straight warm couple of weeks and sometimes complete dud, even from reputable company. I grow four different varieties and they all never overwhelming for me- small clump of flowers- but they are so cute I love to have more. They are ephemeral for me so they will go away in the middle of summer. Flower on the 4th pic is epimedium rubrum- most common variety of epimediums. Those plants can get real fancy and sell for $100 each for newer varieties. Bloom is so delicate but at same time it is a tough plant and likes dry shade. LOVE euphorbias- while many of them are little on the wild side and tend to spread there are not many plants so reliable and easy growing. I treat them as ephemerals too- once they stop blooming I pull them out, knowing that next year whatever root system will be left will produce new crop of bloom for me. This way I have something else late blooming like anemones growing in the same spot and repeating bloom and show later on. Token, those nicotianas are great, I so love them, got this year 3 trays, just finished planting them out. Thank you for Burshtyn tomato pic- I am growing this variety this year first time- something to look forward to, wonder if it is good tom, mine were not the most robust germinators but I have got a few from Trudi's seed.

Thank you so much for the lovely compliments, yes Karachi is sub-tropical, Caladiums are my favorite too... especially the Thai ones... but unfortunately they are not available in my region... i just acquired one plant from the Annual flower exhibition here in Karachi which was (according to the importer) mistakenly arrived along with Aglaonemas...lol. The plant went dormant shortly, but 'm glad its coming back... the colors and varieties fascinate me greatly... Well, that rabbit or his/her relatives did not behave. They hit the gazania plants again, just as they where full of buds. Seems that gazania is #1 on the list of rabbit food in the flower beds. Now the chipmunks and groundhogs are not particular, the first thing the find goes down the throat. BUT They do not like marigolds, and will not go near plants that have marigolds beside them or around them. So next years plan is 100's of marigold plants used as an edging all around the beds, sort of like a fence of marigolds. At least it's worth a try to keep the 4 legged critters away. Angie, Paula, I should have plenty of seeds of the easter egg plant. In the fall the white easter eggs start to turn yellow and when they are bright, bright yellow, they are ripe. Then I pick them off, but them in half, then each half in quarters and let them dry to get the seeds for next year. The fun look is that you have various colors on the plant as the "eggs" start to ripen ranging from pure white to starting to turn yellow to bright bright yellow. Oh, when you feel the "egg" it feels like a real egg as well, feels like an eggshell on the outside. The irony, to me, is it starts out looking like a real white egg, feels like a real white egg and when ripe, turns to the the color of the bright yellow yolk of a real egg. I've seen various information on them with google searches that say they are just ornamental and that they can be eaten. I've just decided to leave it as a conversation piece of plant growing in pots in the garden, since I haven't been able to get a clear answer as to whether they are safe to eat. Paula, I should have plenty of seeds from the cosmos candy stripe for trade, the seeds are just beginning to ripen now. Will be posting in mid Sept for trades Mnswgal, i planted the zinnia "Old Mexico" in HOS of about 10 seedlings at a time. All the seeds where from a burpee commercial pack of zinnia old mexico seeds purchased at K-mart. They had all their seeds from the time they came in to the store through the late spring at 40% off. Did get several packets of seeds there of burpee and martha stewart brand. Anyways, they where all sown at the same time in 3 different containers and believe it or not, they bloomed with 3 different types of blooms. the one above and these 2 blooms this big clump of old mexico that is blooming as it it supposed to look except for one bloom if you look carefully on the right of the pick, there is an old paler flower in the middle of the clump and this bloom of a clump that bloomed totally different from what it was supposed to also, but I do like this one as well and the entire clump is like this The dwarf balloon flower grows about 8 inches tall. I'll have tons of seeds of them once the pods ripen, but it takes forever for them to do so. At least another month before I have ripe seeds for trades, but will have them Thanks Karen Fran

Thank you everyone for your sweet compliments. Plantmaven- The day it snowed was kind of strange, it was a fair amount above freezing with snow. The children loved it. Today on the other hand is perfect, 20c clear blue Sky and no bugs. My gardening heaven. Schoolhouse- Right now the cottage is being rented out to GI Joe and Polly Pocket but I will be sure to put your name on the waiting list. :c) Sweetannie- The neighbor who gave me the tiny irises told me that while she was on vacation she saw a house with a sea of these instead of grass. (I wish I had seen it) And the home owner gave her a clump of each colour when she stop to investigate. Such a treat! Do they multiply quickly for you? Ianna- I know you are right. But it was all the beautiful wild flowers that Mother Nature had plant here that inspired me to start gardening. And they are what keep me inspired (along with all of you of course). I love it when things pop up in unexpected places. For the most part, if they can find a home they are welcome to it. GGG- Yes they are pink and blue Forget-Me-Not (perennial) another one Mother Nature planted for me. I love them! Kay- Yes I am proud :0). I pour my heart and soul in to my family and my garden. And like anything in life, you get out, what you are willing to put in. CMK- I grew the English Daisies from seed. Actually they were the first thing I grew from seed. I just through them at the ground in early spring. And they have been coming back ever since. They bloom twelve months a year for me in my zone 5 garden. I am constantly brush the snow off of them to show people. They have done well and bloomed in every condition I have thrown at them, sun, shade, wet, dry it just doesn't seem to matter. If you are the type of gardener that likes everything in it's place you might not care for them though. They are a really good seeder. You would have to be pretty vigilant with deadheading if you did not want them to spread a bit. I would be more then happy to send you lots of seeds if you would like. A few more shots from today. Beautiful, Bonnie. I love the agastache and I think that's a great shot of the hummer. Your veggie patch is so nice, mine are jungles.

Diana & Karen, that hummingbird has been taunting me all day, LOL! Here is a picture of him sitting still, but it was taken through my kitchen window. Everytime I would go outside to get a closeup, he would start flying around from flower to flower and I couldn't keep up with him.

They'll probably only be here for another week or two, and I am determined to get a real clear closeup of one before they go!!!

Diana, the plant next to the Dianthus is Alyssum 'Golden Queen'. It was wintersown this year, but it didn't bloom this spring, so I'm looking forward to seeing it next spring.

I have to agree with everyone about the Solidago. It only blooms for a short time, but when it does, it is a showstopper!

Bonnie, I love your pictures. The apricot zinnias are beautiful and the later blossoms look great with the portulacas. We have had so much cold rain this summer that my portulacas haven't grown well at all. Your hummingbird in the agastache looks pretty clear to me except for the wings which shows how fast he was fluttering....it's a great picture. If you have the time, the best way to get a clear picture of them is to sit very near their favorite flowers and wait for them to come to you. We have had some pretty cool nights lately so I think ours have left for the year.

I love your apricot zinnias and your whole garden!
I love your herb garden as well.

The hummer on the Agastache 'Apache Sunset', seems very
clear to me. I don't ever see any, so it is a treat to
see the pictures.

I don't know about the bumble bees taking bits of petals,
never heard of it before or seen it.
I do have my sedums [black jack] in full bloom and
they are FULL of Bumble bees! I really enjoy watching them
as well.

Lovely flowers. Impressed with how your herb bed has grown.
My solidago 'Fireworks' is not blooming yet. Have it next to monkshood and hoping to have some blue/yellow photos. Last year it bloomed in October.

Those tomatoes made me hungry! And I love your Gaillardia! I broke down & bought one too this year. I haven't noticed bees nipping it though! Very strange...

Mnwsgal and Shasta, I find the growth of that herb bed amazing too, since several of those plants were wintersown just this year! Both of the chives came from our local plant swap this spring, but even those were tiny little divisions when I planted them.

Etravia, I was searching the web to see if I could figure out what the bees were doing with the petals, and I found something called a leafcutter bee (see link), which uses them for nests, but everything I read describes them as cutting holes in leaves, not petals, so I'm not sure why they are doing that.

I put a little tiny birdhouse on a garden stake. A whole
