Some Early Spring Garden Blooms (pic heavy)

Well after the most beautiful March I can remember, April was cool and dreary. And now May is giving way to warm sunny days. I thought I would share some garden blooms from this year with all of you. I hope you enjoy.

I got this trees for Mothers day 2008 and this was the first year it bloomed. They just opened yesterday. I was so excited.

No ID Tiny Iris

A neighbor gave this to me on the weekend. And she said she would drop off pale yellow ones as well as white and purple ones. They are only two or three inches tall. They're little cuties.

My new birdhouse in a late April snow.

The Lady Slippers are coming up now. I can't wait to share their blooms when they are out.

I just love it when a post states pic heavy!

Very pretty and your fairy garden is delightful.

My goodness, it's hard to imagine snow. It was 91 degrees here yesterday and 56 this morning.

Hi Toni. I hope you had a nice holiday. This GH is kept at a minimum of about 55 at night. I do heat it but as long as it's sunny the heater only goes on at night. W/O the heater running it was above 90 in there today. My big GH's at the farm are kept much cooler. I keep them just above freezing at night. Daytime temps usually don't get much above 70. My grow room is probably the warmest and doesn't get much below 65 but is also rarely above 75 during the day. Grand Duke is my favorite jasmine. I think it's one of the prettiest and the most fragrant. The flower is more then a double. It's kind of like a carnation or a rose bloom. That S. gigantea stinks to high heaven. The cooler temps keep the scent down but when it's in bloom during the heat of the summer it makes me gag. It had something like 10 blooms open at the same time last summer. I couldn't even step into the GH. lol My smaller flowered varities don't have much of a scent, thank goodness, especially because I have quite a few of them in the house. I have no idea what the name of that phael is but the color is odd, sort of a mix of orange, tan and mauve. I've had that Cape Honeysuckle for 4 or 5 years. I cut it back in the spring and keep it at about 4' tall but it's very bushy and takes up a lot of space. I wish it bloomed earlier in the year so I could cut it back in the fall but like the Solandra maxima it blooms on new growth. If I cut it back in the fall I wouldn't get any blooms. That goldfish's foliage has burgundy splotches. I have no idea what the variety is called. I picked it up at Pepper's several years ago. I stop by Pepper's on my way home from the beach every summer. They have an amazing selection of plants but things are notoriously mislabeled. For the prices they charge it doesn't matter to me. They probably have twice as much inventory on site then they list online and prices are even cheaper.

Thanks guys, I had to pull out all the plants put in by the home builder and redid the beds 2 1/2 years ago, no landscaper involved :) WS list- Candymountain foxglove seeds from T&M, second year now, has some seedlings don't know if it would come true from seeds. Soapwort, Sweet william and chives all WS in their second year. Peach Iris and most of my Iris are store bought.I hated them first because I wanted PINK, but these had been very prolific bloomers and fast growers. gave away about half of what i have now and they caught up fast. Love them!! I can dig up some later on. pennstomon -from store bought plant never got to grow from seed.

Thank you everyone. I have really been working on improving my soil the past three years and that has made a big difference, I believe. Good soil - good plants. Good rainfall, this year too. Belinda's Dream looks like a big, fat pink Snowflake. And she smells divine. Has a good strong fragrance. She likes full sun, no ifs, ands or buts about it. That 5-inch bloom is on a plant that is only two feet tall. I rooted it last spring. I just stuck a broken off branch in the ground, and no kidding, she rooted in about three weeks and began blooming within a month. Poor little plant was bent over double with those big blooms. She bloomed all summer last year. This year, her blooms are even bigger. I totally love Belinda's Dream. In front of her is a rose cutting I got from plantmaven. I think it is Rosa, Heritage, although I can't be certain. She is only 18 inches tall and has bloomed twice already this year. She bloomed last year too, but much smaller blooms on an 8 inch plant. She has a strong, lovely old rose fragrance and sweet baby pink color. I just cannot get enough roses! It is my new freak! If I keep on like this, I will have to change my home name from Iowa Hills Herb Farm to Rose Hill Cottage! Thanks again everyone. I'll be sure to tell my rose-girls how much you all love them. ~Annie

Cameron - those are one of my favorites too - Sometimes they reseed and I give them a wide berth! :) I'm reading a book by Celia Thaxter called "An Island Garden." She calls nature a chemist (referring to how things grow in certain counties but not in others). have a great sunday!

I want to live in your fairy garden. How many rooms in the cottage? How much would you charge for rent? :)

Beautiful flowers in a beautiful setting.

I have some of those tiny irises too. I don't know their name either. They were growing in my family cemetery, planted many, many years ago. I have purple and yellow. They bloom much earlier than other irises - early with the tulips, like yours are doing. They are darling little things.

Your Faery/Fairy garden is adorable.

You have that invasive violets though. Be careful - they do spread.

Oh, my goodness, that is beautiful! I LOVE the 2nd photo with both the blue and is that PINK forget me nots? Those pink tulips are devine! They are like rose-shaped tulips at this stage.
I miss so many of the things you can grow! I can not grow primulas and that type of primrose or forget me nots well,
It's just lovely!

That is lovely! I love your tulips and grape hyacinths, I love your fairy garden, and that new birdhouse is to die for too! Such an enjoyable post. You must be very proud of your garden.

Oh Carrie!! You have some of the nicest color combos I have ever seen in a garden! Love the blues and pinks you use, so cool and refreshing.

Do the English Dasies come up every year for you, or do you have to replant every year? Did you first buy plants or sow seed of them? I tried them a long time ago and didn't have much luck- they died only a month or two after planting. Too bad, since they are a favorite of mine (my email even has 'Bellis' in it because I love them so much, lol)

Thank you everyone for your sweet compliments.

Plantmaven- The day it snowed was kind of strange, it was a fair amount above freezing with snow. The children loved it. Today on the other hand is perfect, 20c clear blue Sky and no bugs. My gardening heaven.

Schoolhouse- Right now the cottage is being rented out to GI Joe and Polly Pocket but I will be sure to put your name on the waiting list. :c)

Sweetannie- The neighbor who gave me the tiny irises told me that while she was on vacation she saw a house with a sea of these instead of grass. (I wish I had seen it) And the home owner gave her a clump of each colour when she stop to investigate. Such a treat! Do they multiply quickly for you?

Ianna- I know you are right. But it was all the beautiful wild flowers that Mother Nature had plant here that inspired me to start gardening. And they are what keep me inspired (along with all of you of course). I love it when things pop up in unexpected places. For the most part, if they can find a home they are welcome to it.

GGG- Yes they are pink and blue Forget-Me-Not (perennial) another one Mother Nature planted for me. I love them!

Kay- Yes I am proud :0). I pour my heart and soul in to my family and my garden. And like anything in life, you get out, what you are willing to put in.

CMK- I grew the English Daisies from seed. Actually they were the first thing I grew from seed. I just through them at the ground in early spring. And they have been coming back ever since. They bloom twelve months a year for me in my zone 5 garden. I am constantly brush the snow off of them to show people. They have done well and bloomed in every condition I have thrown at them, sun, shade, wet, dry it just doesn't seem to matter. If you are the type of gardener that likes everything in it's place you might not care for them though. They are a really good seeder. You would have to be pretty vigilant with deadheading if you did not want them to spread a bit. I would be more then happy to send you lots of seeds if you would like.

OMG,i love your gardens~~~~~~~~~~ALL of them.I also have those wild violets and i love them,if they get where i don't want them,i just rip them out.They were part of my childhood growing up on the east coast,and we also had white ones.I have never seen white ones here in Calif.

Love your fairy garden! Oh, and your flowers are beautiful, too. :) But that fairy garden is what makes me smile. Especially the little gate and mailbox! So cute. Thanks for sharing.
