Have you ever seen crested bloom like this!

Months ago, I visited my friend's house, whom I made a xeric garden for.

I was surprised when I saw blooming xDyckcohnia 'Bones Mahogany' that I gave him

it shot an unusual inflorescence, a kind of cristation, its apex develops laterally

from an elongate meristem rather than a single point.

How Bizarre. It looks like fasciation? A very nice garden bed there!

Hey Chanin,

That sure is one crazy inflorescence! I've not seen anything quite like that, but I have seen some crested inflos on a couple of Aechmea hybrids. They were more like conjoined twins, whereas Gift's looks like conjoined sextuplets or more!
Any theories on the reason for it?

I remember you showing us the creation of your friend Gift's xeric garden - and all that transportation and positioning of those huge spiky things. How about showing us (again) a few before, during, and after constuction shots, and then some recent updates?

It's called a "fasciated" growth. It happens when something damages the growing point. Most any plant can become fasciated. It can be caused by bacteria, fungi, insect feeding/burrowing, frost, mutations...you may never know what caused your hosta's fasciation, but it's nothing to worry about. It usually doesn't repeat the next year, and it's rarely contagious. If it looks too creepy, just cut it off. John

At 64 yrs old I can fondly remember pounding the keys on an old Remington Manual Typewriter in the hopes of passing the required 60wpm speed test to complete the course. The base of that desk, minus the hutch top is identical to the typing desks that we used in school. The small fold up table leaf on the right side of the desk is to provide a place to stand a top bound "stenographers pad" or in some cases a vertical metal document holder so you could easily see the original document that you were typing. I do not believe that to be a stenographers desk because it lacks the amenities required by a stenographer, by example, where is the drawer to hold pencils and spare steno pads for taking dictation? I suspect what you have is a much more specialized desk, a "typing pool desk." One clue would be to check the back of the hutch top to see if its plain wood or is it finished? If its plain wood it was most likely intended to be placed against a wall in the manner that you have it now, but if the back is finished it was designed to be a free standing piece where both the front and back would be visible while in use. Typewriters were relatively noisy so in larger offices where the noise of a number of typewriters might interfere with normal business they generally had a separate room called the "Typing Pool". A secretary or stenographer would go into the office and take dictation, then the notes were taken to the typing pool to be transcribed onto final hard copy. In the typing pool the typing desks were aligned in rows like seats in a class room. Note that your desk has small compartments on each side of the typewriter platform that are sized for envelopes while the hutch top would allow ample space for different varieties, sizes and grades of bond paper, and/or the necessary company forms and letterheads. In some cases they had a person who was known as the office devil, who was responsible for stocking each desk with the appropriate envelopes, paper and forms. In those days "Time was money". By automating the desk in the manner you describe a typist could come in, lift the lid and voila, the typewriter slid out, the paper compartments opened and she was ready to sit down and get to business in seconds. The top hutch also serves another function in an office of that period. When seated at the desk you could not see the person ahead of you, and if you turned around you could not see the person behind you, therefore it helped reduce time lost to trivial gossip between desks, and of course there was a supervisor constantly walking up and down the aisles to insure you weren't leaning across the aisle to disturb your neighbor. Also note that there was no place to put your favorite potted plant, the pictures of your kids and your coffee cup, sorry folks, your hear to type, not set up housekeeping....LOL.

There are many different ways to do a wooden BS. I have seen something similar in my KD's showroom. It's a nice look and takes the guess work out of an entire BS, but you still have to figure something out behind the range.

I have talked to the owner, who loves to rescue old chairs and has THIRTEEN rockers plus many other chairs in his house that he has restored! He says that he and his wife discussed this, and just don't have room for another chair. I honestly don't know where I'd put it at the moment, but it is just so interesting looking... I have an old high school friend who does upholstery, and a cabinet maker former neighbor who does chair repair. I'd probably have to employ both to get this done, so am still pondering...The carving is like nothing I have seen, and that is what intrigues me. I suspect I can get it for less, and may see it this weekend.

As Kerry mentioned the disorder feature, I think because the plant was mixed up with
Dyckia & Deuterocohnia genetics.

The garden has matured beautifully, Chanin. I'm happy to see you back here too!

I sometimes see fasciation and distortion on Aloe spikes. Usually not as much as this, though. I suspect it could be bud mites or perhaps some sort of virus that causes it, but other times it may be genetic, as seems to be the case with Aechmea Eileen. When I had that plant, about half the inflorescences came out crested, and judging by the link below, I'm not the only one.

Bromadams, I've kept a few Puya, they seem to be difficult for me.
I think it's too hot for them, only P.laza and P.mirabilis that do thrive here.

Just wonder if the fasciation will pass on to the offsprings or not.
I've never seen or heard of crested plant in bromeliad. This usually occur in cactus.

I think they all mean basically the same thing, Chanin. The way I look at it, "fasciation" is the scientific term for the cells in the meristem becoming spread out, and "cristation" describes the crested appearance that comes as a result of that phenomenon, but you could really use either term in most cases. They just refer to different aspects of the same thing.

"Crested" seems less scientific and a bit more vague to me, since many things (like birds) can have crests but aren't necessarily fasciated. "Cristata" (or crestata?) is the latinized word that would be used as part of a botanical name, but you could refer to such a plant as a "cristate form" or just a "cristate".

This is just my own interpretation, I'm no expert in English (or Latin)!
