OT Melting pot is melting

Well the midwest is considered the melting pot of america. It is rotten to see all of the jobs being lost here thousands of jobs everyday in the midwest.

My Sister and her daughter will be moving in with us for a while until she can get back on her feet. My brother who made very good money lost his job. My dad lost his job two days ago.

This is rotten! I hope it gets better. Sorry for venting. I hope we make it as americans....I am Scared....

Thank you Lucy...Prays are needed in our time of crisis...Our biggest employer here in our county is closing its doors in March...It is gonna wipe that town out..It is crazy here right now with the people...I hope so much everyone will make it thru as a community. They say crime goes up in times of crisis...I have to quit thinking about it...I have never been this scared about anything....

You have my sympathy- I've done that twice! (Finally got a kettle with a whistle after that.) First, it helps to move the offending melted thing and affected burner (as much as is removable) outside. Even if it's cooled off, it can still be the source of much stink. Also, you're going to need more airflow than just opening windows. (Especially if it's not so warm out yet where you are!) Try to not open all of them so much as strategic ones that make air flow in a direction. For instance, I have windows on three walls of the kitchen... if I open the windows that face each other, I get a good cross-wind that takes smoke out with it. If I open the middle window, the air just swirls around inside the kitchen. (Alternatively, to get the whole 1st floor I open just the middle window and then all the windows in the living room down the hall.) If you have a set-up anything like this try to find a combination that makes a breeze you can feel. Next, you'll find fans really helpful, even if you have to borrow/rent them. Point at least one out a window to exhaust what's in the house. Keep fans in any opposite windows blowing in, to keep the cross-flow exchange of air going strong. Run the bathroom fan if you've got one, even. Finally, if there's a corner of the house not infected with smell yet, close it off! Tack up a heavy blanket if there are no doors, and towel under doors if you need to. Try to keep the smell confined to the kitchen so you can go to sleep without being sick tonight. This method has cleared the worst of it out of my house after a few hours, and it was totally dissipated by the next day. (We shut the fans and most windows over night, for heat.) It may take some time... just keep as much ventalation as possible for as long as it takes. And if it's seriously making you sick or dizzy, get out of the house for a while! (This applies to pets, too!) If it's still really bad later and you have the option, don't sleep there. Depending on what exactly burned, the fumes can be harmful if you breathe too much of them. The problems I've had with using a crockpot is that the sides of the crockpot get too hot and the bottles in the center are too cool. Even the low setting gets too high at times. When the heater kicks in, it heats the water up too high even for the bottles in the center of the crockpot. I should have thought about that because soups, stews, etc DO simmer on low---way too hot for coatings. One thing I didn't say is that I thought I should be able to warm up 24 colors and keep them warm all day (rainbow of colors plus light and dark shades). Probably an impossible and unnecessary dream!. I really don't use all of the colors all day long & should be happy just to keep the 5 or 6 I'm actually using at the time warm. I use the coatings to decorate cookies instead of using Royal icing (Yuk!). I can't lay the bottles on their sides or upside down because I use bottles with couplers and cake decorating tips on top that I can't close up (different sizes, shapes). That eliminates a heating pad. You all have given me some great ideas including ones that come from adding your ideas & experience together. I'm going to try: -not filling bottles past half way -using a warming tray and sitting the bottles in mugs filled with hot water or like ritaotay, a pot of hot water -using a warming tray the way earthlydelights does Piper10, you might want to try using Paramount Crystals instead of Crisco to thin coatings. I used to use Crisco but found that Paramount Crystals don't give the finished candy a greasy feel and the tendency to melt in your hand. Learned that one the hard way! Think little red, green & brown handprints on walls, floors & furniture! Thank you all! I'll let you know how it goes during my next cookie marathon in mid-late January (for winter & Valentines Day). Hope I can still find this post by then.

FYI- the crockpot worked wonderfully! It melted 5 lbs of base in a little less than two hours without me having to do anything to it! No stirring, nothing. I was able to make 18 bars of soap at once and Yippee...I'm thrilled! Thanks for the great ideas...Jill, I'll keep that roaster in mind. ;) Kristi

It is terriable and the same here. Some many friends and family members. Im gonna suggest everyone grow a larger garden this year to share. It could feed a hungry child. Placeing a bag of fresh veggies in front of a mother or father struggling could really lift a burden for a day. And aways rember you might end up on the reciveing end...Brandy I have been there before and its scary as a parent. GIVE FREELY!

It's scary when you see what's going on around the country, especially to middle income (100-200K) families. For the most part those in the upper income brackets are still making money and those with lower incomes have services available to them but the rest are getting screwed, as usual. It's not as bad here because this area is more recession proof then most because government and health care are the biggest employers. I heard on the news that Microsoft is laying off employees for the first time. My sister lost her job as head of purchasing for Hilton last month. She made a decent income but is almost 60 years old and job prospects aren't good at that age. I hope your family is back on their feet soon. I think things will get better but there's not going to be any quick fixes. Pray for the best.

It's just terrible...I hope and pray that the economy picks up soon....People can get very nasty when they're hurting and have no place to go...I feel SOOOO bad for them cuz I been there done that when my kids were little.

I will pray for your family...We tried to instill the idea of "saving cuz you never know" with the kids, but we'll see how they take it because you really never know anymore.

Ya, Intel down in Oregon laid a bunch off and ya, Microsoft too here in Washington...VERY sad, my heart goes out to all those families!!

I am originally from Detroit--we graduated from college, got married, and moved down here (Houston)in 1981 because of the recession back then...no one was hiring. All the rest of our family and friends are still up there...one by one, getting laid off, things getting tight. Almost everything is tied into the auto industry...for instance, several have been laid off in constriction, employees of one of the Big 3 have lost jobs, my brother works for Sirius/XM Satellite Radio...new car sales down=less customers, even one laid off after 10 years being with an animal hospital--people do not not have the $$ for pet surguries. Many people don't have the $$ to send their kids to college & student loans are of a different time! These kids are the future of our country...

I know we have cut back...everyone needs to hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

Barb, I am so sorry about your family's loss of jobs, and I pray things will improve for them. It is scary that this is happening here in America; and the worst is that those (politicians) that can do something about it, don't and won't. When our jobs are being shipped out of the country, when we have no border control, when newcomers do not assimilate and we don't expect them to, etc., etc., it weakens our country. Bottom line, it all comes down to money.

Amen Eloise...Maybe us working class should start running for government...It will be okay...I am looking forward to teaching my 8 year old niece wintersowing when she is here. I cant wait to hug her and my sister....I am so excited... :)
