Cassis Seeds

This is really in response to Rachael's post but I wanted folks to see. I have a TON of Candlestick cassia (cassia alata) seed, and will soon have bunches of seeds from popcorn cassia (Senna didymobotrya) and Winter cassia (Senna bicapsularis). All are terrific sulfur atttractors.

I will trade these for seeds of other butterfly or hummingbird plants. Or if you do not have anything to trade but want some, in the case of the candlestick - and the others if the numbers I anticipate hold out (i.e., no hard freeze) - I will just send out as a Johhny Appleseed effort if you let me know you want them.

They are all very easy to grow from seed.

How well does the popcorn cassia/s. didymobotra take a freeze? Will it come back from the roots after a freeze? Is this the one whose flowers smell good, also known as desert cassia?

I have not had a hard freeze since I have had the plant so I don't know if it will come back or not. In fact last year I did not have a frost at all. The other night it dipped to 29 degress but it was so windy and cloudy that there was no frost. The cassia looks totally unperturbed (as do my bouganvilla so I am amazed).

Anyway it does produce seed every year and (at least here in FL) grows big fast. Mine was probably 15 ' round and high in the first year.

Flowers don't have much smell - the leaves smell just like buttered popcorn - hence the name.

Debi and Debbie, I have planted seeds outdoors also. I got behind in the winter sowing in containers so I figured I would just try direct sowing on some of them and see how they do. I have noticed larkspur and love in a mist coming up from last seasons seeds so hopefully some of these I am putting out will take off too. My daffodils are starting to open up all over so it is starting to look like spring here. Also the Bradford pear tree is budding out. Of course Oklahoma has a lot of last minute freezes so I am hoping that the cold doesn't get everything. I plan to finish off the last of the winter sowing I was going to do and then I guess I will start planting seeds indoors on window seals. I really do like starting the little plants myself. I know that it doesn't really have a lot to do with me, but I feel just like a proud parent whenever my seedlings turn into plants and bloom.

Oh My: DJM you are THE most dedicated of them all "Let's just stop at the PO on our way to the hospital...." Only a true Garden Webber would utter such words. I hope all is well. A thrombosis in no laughing matter; note the attention long distance flying is getting recently. You all move your toes and legs, exercise your muscles while sitting on those long flights or you'll be at risk. Djm if the trips to the lab daily are difficult ask your doctor to make a referral to Visiting Nurse, assuming you have that, usually every county has a VNS/ Public Health Nurse service. They will come to you, grab your blood, get it to the lab, and talk with the doctor about dosages. Could be a big time/energy saver for you. Just a thought. Hope you stay well! Poochella

Hello Everybody! Granny your dog is sooo cute! Love everybody's pictures! I got package today from my Secret Pal, and everything was so wonderful! I loved it all! My Secret Pal made me the most beautiful garden wreath I've ever seen! I Love it! The wreath is green hose, with beautiful flowers, a garden glove & shovel attached...it is awesome! Looks beautiful hanging on my front deck.. I also got a small wicker basket with Summer bouquet of silk flowers in it, it's adorable. And, the neatest sunhat I've ever seen. It's in a littl pouch, you take it out and it pops open, it's so cool! I also got two jars of jam a strawberry & a Peach, I'll smack my lips for everybody..lol And, she sent me four cute, soft, teddy bears.. Hey Anita

I'd take some Cassia seeds. The only seeds I have to trade for it are Mexican Milkweed. Interested?

Anita, I would LOVE to have some of your cassia seeds! The only problem is I am totally new to gardening (just startint now at new home) so I have no seeds to give you...Could I beg you for some?

I apologize, I just saw your post from January 22nd. Don't know where I was!

No, the leaves were pretty bad by the time I had to bring cats back in the house. I kept them just in case I couldn't scrounge up enough milkweed from my backyard. But they looked pretty unappetizing, if you can say that about leaves. And they smelled even worse than they looked. I guess the upshot to the story is that I have since purchased two of those plants. One already looks pretty unhappy with the mid-thirties we've been dipping into. I am so tired of hauling plants back and forth to the garage, but I definitely want to save these guys. Those are the size leaves I need! Thank you so much for sending them to me.

And I would love some Cassis seeds if you can spare them. I have Milkweed seed if you would like some. I have some with the yellow flowers and some with the red flowers. I'm such a novice!
