2008 Fall Re-PlantingTime

I am cleaning up and replanting a lot of my bulbs this fall. Today I dug up the NOID bed around the A/C. These are all NOID bulbs, some lost tags and Florida Heirlooms that were shared with me. These are not large bulbs. I originally planted 8-10 bulbs in this area last year. I dug up 3 clusters of 3-5 bulb/bulblets each and planted separately. The first 4 pics in the slideshow are the rest of the bulb/bulblets that grew since then.

The 2nd group is HUGE bulbs that were originally $2 clearance bulbs from Walmart last winter. They are all Red Lions with a Minerva and Apple Blossom or 2 thrown in. These bulbs are humongous! Eash also had 2-3 large bulblets with more growing under the skins. The last pic shows you just how big these grew in less than a year! Enjoy the dirt under my fingers!

WOW ...those large bulbs are huge and they have nice root systems on them. You should get some fantastic blooms out of those!

Yowza! I think you have my large Minerva beat! She's quite huge, but I think things grow bigger in Florida!

Good growing, Cindee! I agree... you should get lots of beautiful flowers from that bunch! And look at all the young ones! You officially have a "bed" of Hippis!

I have been away for a while and haven't even been keeping track of the trade thread. I believe I have an appointment scheduled for Saturday unless, I can get out of it. I have several plants that I am removing from my landscape this fall as well, and could bring them if I can come. Snoogie: Please send me directions in case my schedule permits it. Pam: I can at least stop by to pick that up if that's ok with Snoogie. I am in East Cobb not too far away. How about a nice Spider Lilly for it, (Hymenocallis X festalis).

I can't have anything bulky in my car at my destination, but could drop off my self-watering containers at someone's house on my way up and pick up stuff on the way back. I also have good access to a supply of 4 gallon buckets so could drop those off too. Eggplant seeds!!!! - *any* kind except Black Beauty and Swallow (I have those). Asian or smaller/thinner (not mini) eggplants preferred LARGE pots - over 5 gallons. Plastic preferred. Black Nursery pots ok. Tomato seeds for somewhat cooler weather or shade tolerant plants. ones that can go a little earlier, have a shorter growing period and the plant is a little smaller than normal. Plant supports for smaller plants. Such as peppers or eggplants. Like the ring systems that are used for flowers. I found that while eggplants don't need staking for support, I think they need staking for wind. Small amounts of fertilizer. Fish and seaweed or if someone had the garden tone for veggies that would work too. Or pesticides that would be good for spider mites yet be safe for food.

lacombe - Now you have the hang of it! Beautiful sunset. Isn't it amazing how thick the clouds can look sometimes. I think that we both caught the sunset on the same day. lol I took the following photo of the sky in my back yard, and it is so similar to yours.

Hey, thanks guys. I got the smaller bulbs all separated and planted up around the A/C unit today. We are having glorious weather, was in the 60's this morn. Threatening 50's for next week,YAY NO SWEATING while gardening. The baby bulblets I set into a small window box in the same A/C bed with their mamas, papas and other Kin. I haven't even begun to think about how to do the circle bed. I was quite surprised, since the circle bed is underneath a beautiful black olive (Shady Lady) tree, that the soil the bulbs were in was so very well draining and were easy to remove even with their huge root systems. I think the fine upper roots of the tree are making little canals in the dirt allowing air and moisture to move around and away from the Hippi roots. Whatever it is, these are the biggest bulbs I have...oh yeah, this is Dennis's tree and he ferts it pretty good twice a year. THAT may have something to do with it too!! I'll take pics again after all have been planted up.

what should I do to get my ameryllis I got for Christmas last year to bloom for Christmas this year? I just brought it in from outside and watered it. Now what?

Barbaraann - do a search here in the forum for information on forcing dormancy... there's a ton of great cultural information and how-to's. I know you'll find exactly what you're looking for!

Cindee - you're so lucky to being having such nice mild weather... we're dipping into the 20's at night, and it's been fairly windy and chilly during the days. I have several things to do to button up the yard for winter, and I have lots of rearranging to do indoors so everybody fits in the alcove under lights! As soon as bulbs arrive, I pot them up... but several of my older bulbs could use a re-potting. I'm not sure if I should wait until next spring, or just do it now... with a couple, I may have no choice as they're pretty pot bound!

It sounds like Dennis is taking very good care of your bulbs... by taking good care of his tree! Lucky bulbs!
