2008 Fall plant trade - Atlanta Metro

Looks like I am the lucky one! The 2008 Fall Atlanta Metro Gardenweb Plant trade will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2008 at my home in East Cobb/Roswell. I appreciate everyone letting me do this. My new garden plan comes in on the 30th. So I will be having a free for all. What I don't need in the new design you are free to dig up and take away.

Shall we start at 11:00a.m. to allow everyone time to arrive, unload and socialize a bit.

Bring whatever plant or garden related material you care to trade. You may arrange specific trades here or simply enjoy the free for all portion of the trade day.

We can do a potluck brunch/lunch too. The kitchen is available for heating or reheating. While there is a covered porch it requires negotiating a set of stairs. Please let me know if anyone has mobility issues. I am happy to set tables and chairs up out front.

Please come join us at least to socialize if not to trade! I will contact people who wish to trade via email on this thread, so you must post here, and unblock your email (a link on your page so I can send a message). I will send an email with directions and addresses etc. at the beginning of October. Last I checked mapquest was not correct. I will not post the address and directions here.

I'm looking forward to it!

Here's what I've dug up so far:

Rhododendron "Yaku Princess"
Pieris japonica "Mountain Fire" (I think)
Daylily "Winberry Candy" (3, could bring a couple more)
Gaura "Karalee Petite Pink" (4)
Gardenia radicans

I also plan to dig up:
Christmas Fern
White Astilbe
Hosta

If anyone is interested, I'll bring:
Black eye Susan (Rudbeckia fulgida?)
Solidago "Fireworks"

Vroomp, I've got a pot of what I belive is Sedum "Autumn Joy," if you're interested. :)

I've got LOTS of "Honorine Jobert" anemones (maybe 25 or so)
2 small "Rainbow" leucothoe shrubs
a few pots of "Homestead" purple verbena
some Mondo grass

I am in dire need of one gardenia radicans to fill in a space.

I can't find "Winberry Candy" daylilies on line to see what they look like -- description? I might be persuaded to divide some of my favorite "Atlanta Moonlight" daylilies to swap for ??? if someone is looking for those.

Snoogie -- my email is gayle710@bellsouth.net. I'll be there on the 4th regardless, but earlier would be better for me. We've got tickets for the Tech/Duke game that starts at noon.

From I-65 (north or south) take Exit 250 to I-459 South. The signs say Tuscaloosa/Bessemer. From the interchange go about 1 mile to Exit 13, US-31 South. Get into the far left hand turn lane at the exit ramp. There is a stop light at the bottom of the off ramp. Turn left at the light and go under I-459 for 6/10ths mile. Stay in the same lane. Go through FOUR traffic lights. When you have gone through the fourth light, start looking for the left turn lane at the FIFTH traffic light. This is the US-31 and "Lorna Rd - Hwy 150" intersection. Hanging in the middle of the intersection is a green sign saying . Turn left on to Lorna Road. There are 4 cross streets on Lorna Road with a traffic light: (1) Lodge Drive (2) Data Drive (3) Centennial Drive. You will then make a big left hand curve and start down hill to the fourth cross street (4) Rocky Ridge Ranch Road. It is 9/10ths mile from Hwy 31 to Rocky Ridge Ranch Road. As soon as you have crossed Rocky Ridge Ranch Road, turn right into Aldridge Botanical Gardens. There are three aisles of parking. Drive to the garden gate and turn left, go over to the third aisle, turn let and drive back toward Lorna Rd. to the parking section which is parallel to and nearest to Lorna Road. On Thursday I will make a map of the parking lot. If you need additional instruction or a copy of the parking map, let me know and I will email a copy.

On the morning after the tornadoes hit Atlanta, I drove over to East Atlanta with some neighbors for GGG's church plant sale, which had been cancelled. From there we went to her house to make sure she was ok. I've never seen such a frightening scene of devastation and destruction. In the midst of the chaos stood GGG's beautiful purple house, virtually untouched, but the implications were heartstopping. I would like to suggest that instead of our regular spring plant trade on April 19th, we volunteer to meet at GGG's house for a cleanup day of her backyard. Anyone who wants to bring plants to trade with each other could still do that, but I think it would be really great if we got together to pitch in and help with whatever is ready to be done in GGG's yard at that time. I would imagine that might be cutting up felled trees and branches, moving soil and rocks around, rebuilding garden beds, planting new trees and shrubs, for example. Those who are unable to do heavy work could offer moral support and carry glasses of sweet iced tea to the workers. I have not mentioned this to Glynis. But if she's agreable and thinks it would be helpful, what would everyone else think?

Hi Everyone, Sorry I didn't make it to the swap today.With everything that's been happening and going on with the weather,I totally forgot today is the day.I really was looking forward to seeing you all.We're really trying to clean up everythng and waiting for help getting things back on the house.We have lots of missing shingles to get back on and the back down spout is laying in the back yard still yet,Not to mention pieces of siding blown off are in the far back yard.And of course a very large tree limb thats too heavy for either of us to move plus all the broken tree limbs and trash that comes along with the ride.But we'll get it done.We were without electric and water from Sunday to Wed.I'm very thankful it wasn't any longer then that and no one was hurt.I'm sorry to hear some of you are still in the dark,But know it won't be long now.I'm very grateful to all the workers who gave up time being with their families and loved ones to bring our power back on. I had so many plants to bring today,But like I said"Totally slipped my mind". I guess I will save them for the Spring Swap.I hope to see you all then.I will miss you all so very much!!Hope you had a good one!! I know you did!! Great thread... thanks everyone for your input. I sure do hope you all will update this throughout the fall season. It really can be a great resource for us all to review. As for Raven Squash and Bon Bon Squash... never heard of those... I love most squash. I have tons coming up of the 3 winter squashes I planted, acorn, buttercup, and green hubbard. I also have a couple zucchini planted (but haven't come up yet) and one black beauty or something like that... I think that's another variety of acorn squash? I'm going to have to try to hit the traders up for a bunch of different varieties of squash for the spring! My tomatoes are really not doing too well. When they were babysat by my mom, her AC when out for about 5 days and they were in over 95 degrees of heat all day and half the night long... ugggh... some have passed on, but I'm hoping to save some of the last sadder-looking ones. They were just such babies, they couldn't take that kind of heat yet. So.... that's my update so far... And, EG, I would try doing your lettuce in there as you were thinking of. I think it's a great crop to try especially because of it's size. Plus, with the cut and come again method, it would like very nice and be convenient for harvesting. I misspelled the daylily. It's supposed to be Wineberry Candy. Google images has some great pics.

I do mean the first Saturday - so that would be the 4th, if I'm finally reading the calendar correctly. I have no problem starting earlier as someone requested if its not a problem for all of you. I would just spend the extra hour beating myself up over how bad my garden looks for having guests over. So save me from myself!

Don't have that much this autumn, but here's what I've got. :)

Lemongrass divisions
Assorted heuchera divisions
Low growing sedum with yellow flowers
Fernleaf bleeding hearts
Persicaria 'Red Dragon' -- can take cutting

I also have a bunch of heirloom tomato seeds that I'd be happy to bring if anyone is interested.

If anyone is interested in a field trip after the trade there are several great nurseries about 30 minutes north of there in the Hickory Flat area including Autumn Hill, LadySlipper, and this amazing backyard nursery that has the most unusual plants and decent prices.

I'm looking forward to the trade (as always)though I don't have a lot to bring.

Here is a partial list of what I have:

Hydrangea - Nikko Blue
Orange Crocomesia
Sedum (Autumn Joy I think)
Red Shamrock (large leaves with purple blooms)

Pam, if you want any of this would love to trade for the Rhododendron Yaku Princess

Gayle - a pot of the purple Verbena would be great if you want any of this

Turkeytaker -- if I have anything you want I'd trade for the fernleaf bleeding heart

Anybody have Thyme, chives, or oregano?

Pam,
I've got chives and oregano and some cinnamon basil. The cinnamon basil is pretty but has a different taste than the regular basil. I've never dug any of those up, but I'll give it a try and hopefully I won't kill anything. Doesn't have to be a trade, you can have it.

Does anybody have some extra empty plastic pots that you got nursery plants in? My Pike doesn't have a recycling pile anymore, which is amazing considering how many pots I've brought back to them every year. lol

You can have the Rhodi, even though I have what's on your current list. Miss Yaku needs a good home. :) Let me know if you'll be bringing other items.

I have been away for a while and haven't even been keeping track of the trade thread. I believe I have an appointment scheduled for Saturday unless, I can get out of it. I have several plants that I am removing from my landscape this fall as well, and could bring them if I can come.

Please send me directions in case my schedule permits it.

Pam: I can at least stop by to pick that up if that's ok with Snoogie. I am in East Cobb not too far away. How about a nice Spider Lilly for it, (Hymenocallis X festalis).

Thanks for coming on Saturday. It was very nice and mellow!

I've started digging out things that will no longer be in the beds according to the new design or potting them up temporarily until their new home is prepared. Yikes! I'm gonna have a tons of things in pots for next springs trade.

Thanks for hosting! It was great meeting everyone. I got a few things in the ground today. Hopefully, the rest will go in sometime this week.
