I haven't posted many pics lately. I've had so many wonderful plants and pictures I haven't had time to post them all here. :)

So Pretty! The close ups really show the delicate beauty of these flowers. Though I have many of these in my garden, I've not "looked" at them this way - thank you!

The plant to the left of the Gaillardia in the last photo is Penstemon pinifolius 'Compactum'. I saved some seed last year, and it wintersowed just fine. I'll be collecting seed again this year if anyone is interested. Here is a closer shot: The nice thing about this plant is that it stays evergreen, like a tiny shrub, all winter. Here is a photo of what it looks like when not in bloom: Becky, my Asclepias tuberosa is 'Gay Butterflies', which is supposed to be a combination of red, orange, and yellow, but so far all I've gotten is orange. I have a couple of other plants that the blooms haven't opened on yet though, so there is still hope. The 'Oranges & Lemons' is not wintersown, and I have never seen seeds available for it, so I don't know that it would come true from seed. I got them from Bluestone, and High Country Gardens. Thanks, JanetP! Madame BV is a wonderful lilac shade that would work with my other plantings. I may order one. Saw it available online at "Brushwood Nursery." Buyorsell, thanks for the Ernest M. pic. It's gorgeous, & a color that I love. I may order one of those too, from Jackson Perkins! That would give me late spring, mid-summer, & early fall clematis coverage! Flowergirl, have only been in this house 3 yrs. Planted Zeph 2.5 yrs. ago & this was the first serious flush it has produced. I don't know what is in store with the rose in the future. I just had to try it though, as I was intrigued by the "thornless" feature it has! I appreciate the feedback. I look forward to having more seasons to enjoy this great flower, the Clematis, now that I've been pointed toward a couple of options. Thanks!

Mary1, No, it doesn't fade, this pic was taken about 7:00PM. Rain makes it blotchy, but the sun doesn't phase it. Glad you like it! You wouldn't be dissappointed with it.

Debra, Bad choice of words on my original post. I really DO like having late bloomers in the garden. I really hate when they continue to have their edges hang up during our cooler August mornings. Not my idea of a good time to have to go out in the garden and pry petals apart every morning. I have some lates like Ultimate Weapon and Katherine Marin that almost never hang up even on the coolest mornings. I really like the size and color of that last seedling, but if it continues to bloom late and hang, it will probably be taking a trip south to where the mornings are warmer and consequently it might be less inclined to hang. Verrrry nice! You got some good color in that sunflower too, I planted 2 red ones but they came up with yellow edges, pretty but a disappointment. They are Moulin Rouge and another red.

I'm not sure on the aster, something like powder puff, pom pom or totem pole. I put them all in the same large pot.
For a red orange sunflower you can't beat tithonia and I personally loved my chianti this year. I also had great success with strawberry blonde and I'm not sure the name on the first sunflower up there but it has been wonderful, lots and lots of buds on each stem. Thanks everyone.

Lovely pics. I particularly like the Aster - a beautiful shade for the late summer garden. I haven't grown any for many years - this would be a nice one to try. I also love the Tithonia - I had two promises of trades last winter, but none materialized. Maybe third time lucky. Thanks for sharing.

I should have some tithonia available in another week or two. I'm going to have far more seed than room. Pity they are so hard to harvest, prickly little things.

Those are all beautiful. A couple I'm not familiar with.

Are sunflowers hard to grow? I think I read they need rich soil, and the place I plan to try some is kind of iffy.

Do you winter sow them to get a jump start? I'd be inclined to just sow them direct.

I did winter sow them, this was my first year with them and they did great. I have a pretty moist clay soil but they seemed fine. They are a Hardy Annual and mine laughed at the frosts that hit after they sprouted. I did learn to keep mine in their containers till they had grown too tall for the covers though because the squirrels like to nip them back.
Here are the ones I winter sowed for my mom. They love her loose soil and sun and some of these are over ten foot tall.

Thanks, floodthelast. I think where I want to put them the bottoms will fry like some do. Yours are pretty, and you found just the right spot for them. I like that old shed or barn.

I think I'll try to grow some morning glories with the sunflowers out a little by the porch. The bricks make it hot, even the morning glories wilt on the worst days and I have to water. The morning glories will try to climb the sunflowers though, they will tangle with anything, then I have to pull them off.

I'll do a few seeds another spot just in case. I'm glad to know you can winter sow them, may try that.

I have a question. I pulled 2 dead flowers last weekend at the hotel I stayed. LOL. Bad Neil! Hahaha. It's dead. :) I remember the flowers really look like your tithonia. However, it looks like a spent flower of a coneflower. The seeds though are bigger and color black. Do you think it's tithonia? I think I have a pic somewhere of the plant.

I think you found tithonia Neil, they are very prickly to get at. The seeds look a bit like sunflower seeds but have some spikes at the top, I'm calling the pointed end the bottom here.
Aliska sounds like a good spot, my tithonia did wilt a bit on hot days till they really got established, I don't think I saw any wilt on the others. I do like how close together you can sow sunflowers, it's like a giant bouquet all the time.
pitimpinai, I totally agree, I hope to have many of my favorites return and I am curious to see the new crosses and colors.
