Newbie -- still learning (pics)

HELP!!! I posted my original message under exchanges for some reason. After you read this, or before, change to the exchanges page, and you can see my pictures. I guess I just had a SENIOR MOMENT -- sorry!

Haven't been on the forum for the past month. My son and his family came from Okinawa and spent the month of July with me. He helped me so much--trimming trees, new roof and my barn storage building, planting large shrubs and trees that I hadn't been able to do--it was wonderful. And, of course, I had a wonderful time with my two grandkids, Emily - 14, and Bradley - 12.

I was origionally disappointed in some of my WS flowers because they are mostly green leaves growing--(I planted too many perennial and not enough annuals, but I will correct that next year and can't wait to see all my perennials in bloom.)

Here are a few pictures of my new beds, they look beautiful to me, even if there is not enough color yet.

This is one of my favorite flowers, I will plant many, many more next year. I also gave two of my friends lots for their yards...impatients do wonderful here and bloom so long--until the first frost!!! Next year I am going to try the balsum variety. Got to find some seeds to order.

I also love my hosta bed--I ordered these at the end of last year's growing season, and all but one came back up.

And last, but not least are these two plants called Cat's Whiskers which I got when I went to a native plant class last year. I love them, and so do the butterfly's and humming birds.

I enjoy this forum so much, I can't wait until it cools off so I can work in my yard again. I have so much weeding, etc. that I need to do. I sure have enjoyed everybody's pictures--keep them coming!!! Also hope I have not taken up too much space and your time.

Sounds like you had a wonderful time with your family :) Is your son in the service?

This was my first year WSing or really sowing seeds in general, so I didn't know some of the perennials wouldn't flower the first year. I'm really looking forward to next year. I have ordered plenty, probably too many, annual and perennial seeds this year so I should have more than enough of both.

I am unable to see your pictures, but would like to. To get a better idea how to post pictures, try this link. I used it to learn how to post pictures as well.

Things I have learned my first year wintersowing??? 1. There is always someone on this site who can answer your question no matter what. 2. Only plant the seeds that you really want, because everything will germinate. 3. Marigold seedlings do not like frost. 4. When planting out, don't let a certain friend help you (that way the plant markers will make it to the same place as the plant) 5. Separate the garden from the dog... or you will end up with just the dog. 6. Grow veggies that family members enjoy, and they will help you maintain the garden 7. Don't keep track of stuff on an old laptop. That way when your laptop crashes, you don't lose all of your info. 8. Don't plan too much...wintersowing gives you way more plants than you ever plan on.

Stage Rat, thanks so much. I googled it and that is what it is. I will go right out and dig it up. I don't want those in my flower beds. I wish all my flowers looked that healthy though. I forgot to mention lesons learned about which containers worked best for me. My favorite is the round containers that I get cakes or cookies in (also an excuse to buy them). I make newspaper pots, and they are so much easier to plant out than to try and get the babies out of a milk bottle or 2L bottle. I think the newspaper helps the soil also. I tear off the top as I am dropping them in the hole so that they don't wick away the water. All of mine that were planted that way are doing the best. Also, I put a small water bottle in the center and use plastic shower caps (16 for $1) from the dollar store on top of them--it works great. The second favorite is the 1/2 size stem table aluminum pans from Sam's. The shower cap fits on them also with a small water botter to hold it off the babies. I think I will learn many more lessons from the responses to this thread. Thanks again for helping me ID the plant. Also thanks to everyone who shared their lessons learned. It is a great help. Jeane

You shouldn't be getting an "invalid url" message from the html link (3rd box in list, under each picture). As soon as you left click within the 3rd box it will say copied, you just have to come back to your GW post, right click and select copy. You can then preview your GW message to see if it worked right. I've gone to your album and the lily pictures don't seem to be too big so I wouldn't worry about resizing those particular ones. If someone doesn't come along to save the day, you could always link directly to your album from the GW linking provided under the message composition box. From your photobucket album, copy the website address from the top of your screen and put that in the "Optional Link URL:" box and then for the name of the link you just call it My album (or something similar) Hope that works :) Here is a link that might be useful: Ellix

Thanks again for the nice comments. The silicone I use is the kind glaziers use for sealing windows after they have been installed. It works just fine for me and is very clear. I haven't seen GEII over here in Australia. I've got a new project under way...on a vintage window, will post picks as I progress. Renee

Thanks for putting the link on my page--I didn't think of doing that. I did want people to see all my plants that came from the seeds they sent me--I really did appreciate them.

My neighbors have also benefitted from the seedlings that I gave them. This is a wonderful forum, I really love reading it and seeing everybodys gardens.
