Thought I would share some of my favourite winter sown plants which are in bloom right now.

My favourite winter sown Echinacea. It grows only slightly over a foot tall and the flowers are perfect with such a soft touch of pink!

Tiffy, your gardens and flowers are beautiful. You must be so pleased. The hollyhock and lychnis are such a pretty combination. I just love that little echinacea....I will be looking for that one as it is now a "must have" for my garden. It is lovely to see the promise of blooms in the last picture. Very nice, thanks for sharing.

Karen, the chinese forget me nots keep blooming for me from late spring right up until the can't take any more nights with some frost in the late fall. The regular perennial forget me nots bloom just once, maybe twice sometimes and then they are gone. I keep my chinese forget me nots in part sun in 3 different beds, but the clump I tried in the back yard, in full sun, bit the dust in early July. Northener, I grow the 4 o'clocks in pots so that I can move them around in my beds to add color when needed and to help deter japanese beetles from destroying my roses and malva. 4 oclock leaves are deadly poison to the japanese beetle. they eat them and die. I end up with quite a few dead ones on the top of the mulch in the pots. They are hardy plants when the JP attack them chew up the leaves. They just shoot out more and more leaves and keep on growing and blooming. In the mean time, the roses and malva are left alone, instead of totally destroyed. Send me an email and I'll tell you how I save the tubers from year to year. I don't do anything complicated and it's really easy to do. So far they have survived for the past 2 years with the method I use. But just to be safe, I do sow 4 o'clock seeds every year just incase I lose the tubers. Fran

Need early August bloom tips for wedding

I am trying to think of something that could be started now to guarantee a nice cut flower in two months and I am coming up blank. Hydrangeas or Hybrid tea roses, perhaps? You could buy several plants on sale and nurture them until then. But even then, you can't control for exaact timing of buds, disease, and other factors. Maybe someone else on here will have suggestions. My two cents is this: If flowers for your wedding are of importance, maybe you could order some blooms online and arrange them yourself? I was in a wedding a few years back and the bride did just that and it worked out well. Or you could check out local farmer's markets and let someone else do the growing work for you. Thanks Chris! I wish I had a greenhouse, but I dont really have a place where it would look good and get the benifits of the sun. I usually just put the plants around the house with the tallest palms going by the tallest ceiling . Last year all the plants barely had a place to go and this year I have a LOT more so Im starting to get a little worried. I think Im going to partially convert a room into a greenhouse since it has nice south facing windows and is rarely used. But one day I would really love to put all these plants in a greenhouse! Until then my house becomes a jungle with all the plants are fighting for their lives until spring finally comes! I think I am going to look up about greenhouses and maybe see where one can go. I can dream :) And thanks for the tip about the Fireball bromeliad. Originally when I took them out in late march, they were in full sun, but when the tree grew leaves for the summer, It got a lot more shade. I think next year Im going to look for a place with more sun and maybe if I get enough pups, I will have a few more plants too! And you got my ending signature just right! Thanks for the kind compliments, everyone. It's fun and gratifying to share the beauty of these blooms with y'all. :) In backwards order: Jen, you're such a sweetie! Perhaps with some good fortune, we can share that fizzy in person someday (we'll put on some B-Boys: one two one two keep it on...LOL) . In the meantime, it's a lovely thought :) I can't tell you what an unexpected surprise it was to see the 3rd MP flower open. That inflo stops me in my tracks every day. Most underrated and highly recommended! You're so right re Light Rainbow, although it's more petite in flower and plant than MG (which I have, but which has not yet bloomed). It's a little charmer, though, and def worth the $20! Rim Fire's scent has grown on me: not the sweetest, but spicy and unique, and it wafts on the air quite strongly. Nicole, I saw your Yolanda (lovely btw!) and agree. Thanks for your kind words :) George, interesting and gorgeous shots of PP in its many guises. Thanks for sharing. Very nice Tiffy, one of these days I"m going to learn how to use the digital camera I bought my hubby. I love the idea with the nasties and geraniums.

Tiffy - your gardens are beautiful - I had to double-check and see what zone you were in. I also have to remind myself and say that I did have some pretty spring bloom with many of those flowers but it seems like such a distance memory with all the drought and heat we have had the past two months.

Thank you so much for posting them - gives me the incentive to continue to sow and plant and chalk this summer season up to experience and a lesson in patience. Who knows next year we just may have the 'perfect' weather :):)

I also love the nastursium and geranium combination - it is on my must do container for next year.....

Love it! The Salmon lychnis looks very cool. I am going to try and grow that one myself.

It's the same as the Maltese Cross, just a different colour. I also have the white, but it blooms for a shorter time - no lasting power. I'll have lots of seeds if you need some.

I certainly don't have zonal envy seeing your extreme temperatures in the 'States'. We also live along the Atlantic coast which cools things down a bit. Do be patient with your winter sown plants. The Heliopsis Lorraine Sunshine is 4 years old now and has never looked better!

Lovely pictures of your flowers, Tiffy. Thanks for sharing. The geranium/nasturtium combination is great with the geranium making the inner markings of the nasturtium pop.

Whistle, whistle, clap, clap! I have some Lorraine Sunshine plants from seeds you sent me 2 years ago - they've established the variation in the leaves, but no blooms yet - third year's a charm, right? Love seeing that yours are in bloom now; that means when mine get around to it, they should bloom about the same time as the Joe Pye weed they're planted next to.

Keep up the good work - looking at your garden gives me inspiration!

I start 95% of my winter sowing in late February/early March, and seeing as these are reseeding annuals, they'd be done around the end of the month/beginning of April before the tender annuals.

Lovely! I'm jealous of the foliage on your hollyhocks. I never grew them before & WS'd them this year. I had 1 flower already but the foliage on all of them is yucky. Must be hollyhock rust? I'm still trying to decide to yank them or keep them.

Sigh...Basically, all I need is a computer program to automatically add every plant in your garden to my Seeds Wanted list! I especially love the Nasturtium and geranium combo.

That is soooo pretty! All of it, and I can't decide which I like the best! I think it's a tie between the Peach Hollyhock/Lychnis combination and the Pot of Nasturtiums and Geraniums. Are you going to be in the Cottage Garden Fall Swap?

(I have never had nasturtiums that are that well-behaved before. I got some that said 3 feet and they have grown at least 8 feet and are still going! )

Love all of it. That lychnis/hollyhock patch is very pretty - I think I have some seeds for the salmon somewhere, will have to give it a try.

Strangely enough, the patch of " buds, pods, and blooms" is my favorite. Go figure!
