Oh, I'd say you're right on track! I've bought about 30 different things since I finished up this years wintersowing, but glancing at my current inventory, I probably have 60 different annuals, at least 20 perennials, 20 herbs, and over 60 different veggies.

It doesn't mean I'll sow that many things, though I did sow over 90 containers last year, but some will be used for trading, since there are always more things on my wishlist.

I can certainly relate to the issue of sod removal. Not sure why some men are so attached to it, but I managed to eliminate another 50 + sq. ft. of it this past spring for an herb bed, and I can see that another bed is going to "have" to be enlarged. Maybe if I do it in stages, 6" one week, 6" the next, etc., he won't notice it's missing, LOL.

as for the "sod" i'm making beds(out of boxes), and then i'm going to cover the bottoms with that landscaping fabric, then fill the beds with compost, then my plants, so no more of this weeds stuff. i'll be pulling them when i need to. so far i've been checking and only needed to 2 times in the past 2 months on the one bed. i love that!! no more hubs griping about the grass in the veggies!! LOL ~Medo **big grinn**

You think you have it bad. I already have 135 seed packets and these were either bought from t&m or picked up here and there. And these are not counting the seeds have yet to collect fromt he plants in the garden. I will also have to confess some of the 135 seeds are left over from last year that I did. And I am already running out of space. I have like 20 or different types of zinnias but they look great planted out. And this was my second year of WS I can only image what I will be like in say 5 or 10 years. I am going to be sending my extra seeds to bakemom though they will be finding a great home with other people.

ponce418, you know about summer sowing, don't you? You could ss a few of the seeds you have now, sweet william and snapdragons, maybe some others. If you do the sweet william this year you will have blooms next year.
Learn from my mistake, get those beds enlarged or made now so those sprouts have a place to go when they are ready. Saves extra work of potting up or frantic digging. My DH loves when I dig up more sod, less lawn for him to mow. My first large bed was made at his suggestion so he didn't need to mow the slope.

You might visit the seed trading and round robin forums. If you have more seeds in a packet than you need you can use some of those to trade. Some traders set up SASBE offfers. LOL, soon you will have to think of new ways to store all the seeds you will accumulate.

Medontdo, I suggest you skip the landscape fabric and use cardboard. The cardboard (or newspaper) will break down and add to your soil. The landscape cloth will be there for years, and is difficult to cut through. My friends and I hate that stuff. Imagine us cussing (or at least thinking of cussing) when we run into the landscape fabric in our church garden.
Also consider adding some soil and peat moss to your compost. Pure compost tends to dry out and gets crusty. I mulch with shredded leaves to keep weeds out.

Paula, I started ws zinnias last year and am hooked. Each of the last 5 years I have sown more containers. Expect to sow fewer this winter as won't have to sow many perennials. I am adding an annual bed for next spring, starting to dig tomorrow, and will include zinnias.

I'm with mnwsgal on the landscape fabric. My husband, the non-gardender, insisted for some reason on landscape fabric. Biggest pain in the neck EVER. Especially if you have bulbs in your garden beds.

Yup. There I was this past spring frantically pushing back mulch and tearing out fabric because the crocus and daffodil bulbs had multiplied over the winter and were stuck under fabric in places.

If I had the time, I'd remove ALL the mulch and pull up every last inch of fabric in my gardens.

As for summer sowing, I was planning to avoid that. Between work, the outdoor projects (new deck, fence staining, etc) that I have going on this summer, PLUS maintenance on the current beds, I didn't think I'd have the time. But the weather has been terrible for weeks around here. Constant thunderstorms and rain.

Since I'm stuck in the house more than I anticipated, I'm going to start summer sowing this weekend. Pansies, sweet william, etc.

I can't wait to try WS, I am storing and trading seeds like nobodies business. I'm saving all the plastic gas station cups from my pop habit and containers everywhere.

I have summer sown a few perennials and my columbines direct sown are germinating nicely.

I just can't wait to see everything grow. At least I have the new morning glories to tangle up everyday. Watching them grow is so encouraging in this nasty dry/wet weather.

I haven't counted my seed packs. I have 2 old cookie tins full, one for annuals and one for perennials.

I have recently started to harvest seeds from my own plants. I'll be looking for homes for those "pups" soon.

I jumped on this thread with great anticipation expecting news of another seed sale somewhere...heart racing ready to surf to another site and see what they had!

This as I'm whining about watering, weeding and deadheading in the August heat/humidity and planning day after day what I've got to do differently in all the beds for next year...LOL.

All I know is once you've had even one Cleome you NEVER need to buy more seed...unless you want the purple instead of the pink you already have! I nicknamed the seed pods "Cleome Haricot Vert" since they look like the little French green beans.

Got my Heliotrope seeds saved since I fell in love with that plant and Nicotiana seeds are ready in dried pods whenever I want them.

Going to forego Cosmos next year since deer/rabbits ate all but ONE of 50 seedlings. Have no idea where I would have put 50 seedlings but they came in handy when I tried to replant from stock every time old ones got eaten.

There's still always "something else" one could use from a good sale, though...LOL.

i have to use the landscape fabric because i have the quack grass, someone told me to put like 10 layers of newspaper down and that would stop it, well the dang stuff grew right thru it, sooo i had to think of another way, right now i have plastic down and its ok. it has a way of draining. my ground underneath is uneven. maybe if i go more layers?? i did overlap them. and its just for the boxes only. ~Medo

I agree, this is a forum of enablers.. my seed box is overflowing and I have containers for ws'ing stashed everywhere... yet I still want more!

But what a wonderful addiction it is to have.

Medontdo, I use cardboard rather than newspaper and have not had any grass grow through it. Using Don's instant bed idea I have made several beds and am working on another one now, an annual bed for next year.

I have lots of cosmos and nicotiana seeds but didn't ws any this year and still have lots of plants that were self-seeded from last year's ws ones.
