Wonderful! That gives me memories from my youth. I grew up in Iowa, and we'd put milkweed leaves with the eggs on them in jars in the spring and then all summer watch them grow into catepillars (and poop a lot) and turn into crysalises and then let them go when they emerged as butterflies. What a beautiful experience! The crysalises are just so gorgeous with the little gold specks.

thats awesome! i have one of these in my room right now! i decided to raise one that i fund and it crysalized on a stick and now im waiting for it to hath out! its fun!

How very cool - we have watched black swallowtail butterflies emerge but never monarchs. The cats are on our butterfly weed - I will have to look for a crysalis

I had a similar experience last week. I saw the caterpillars, lots of them, but could never see a chrysalis. Last week, I saw one one my hollyhock, which was at least three feet from the butterfly bush, and wondered how it got there. I was watching it for a few days when we had quite a storm one night, and it was gone the next day - probably blown/washed away. I never got around to getting a pic. but it looked exactly like yours.

I think the gold specks on the chrysalis are the neatest. it's also been neat to see the tiny tiny caterpillars get larger and larger.

now I need to check my parsley and dill for swallowtail caterpillars....if this rain and heat/humidity will go away.

That is so beautiful. AND Ohio State won! We were there. The reason I bring this up is that a monarch flew into the stadium. 100k+ spectators and 800-900 marching band members. It must have been confusing for him. I lost track of the butterfly, but I sure hope it got out of there!

I missed the hatching of the monarch, which was disappointing. I'd been watching it closely as you could start to see wing patterns inside the chrysalis. came home from work one day and it had hatched without me. :(
