Finally gonna happen :D

I finally will get my first Tithonia bloom! They've stayed fairly small all season, but over I'd say about 2 weeks they've been growing bigger everyday! Also the Climbing Snapdragon has some nice buds on it and a few already showing color....YEAH!

I don't know what I did wrong with Cypress Vine, but none of the ones I planted out have grown more than a 1/4" since...all under 2"....oh well.

Which Tithonia did you sow, Vera?

I got some Fiesta Del Sol seed in a swap and only had one plant germinate. Well, I don't know how many germinated, but I only had one get to be a planting-out sized plant - THANK GOD, because even at its dwarf size, it is BIG. It has completely overtaken a Euphorbia, and that's saying something!

I think Fiesta Del Sol is supposed to get 3 or 4 feet tall...so small for a Tithonia. I LOVE IT!!

I don't know what Tithonia it was....I sowed the package that was just labeled Tithonia I recieved in trade. I received another one labeled as Tithonia 'Fiesta del Sol' as a bonus from another trader, but didn't sow those. Possibly these are the same because mine are no taller than 16 maybe 20" tops. I was expecting a towering plant :O
The first bloom has been slowly opening since yesterday but still wasn't fully open this morning at 6am....

In past years, in the week following Thanksgiving, I've seen fresh turkey parts (half-breasts in particular) that are not usually available; there are plenty of wings, legs, and thighs, too. They have very short "sell-by" dates, so I'm pretty sure they are from leftover birds. If I have room in the freezer, I take advantage of the surplus. Since parts are priced differently from whole birds, I can't tell whether they're marked down (I don't buy them often enough to keep tabs on the regular prices). Sue

Hey, on the upside, it's Nov. 1st and we're all still here--in spite of the predictions of disaster and the bad weather and geographical conditions of the past 6 months. I'm just hoping the religious kooks that have been telling us the world was going to end will take a break now, now that they've had two dates come and go without incident. My take is that the weather changes--it goes through cycles. I've learned in my decades here that some years are wet, some are dry. Some hot, some cold. Some stormy, some calm. And every so often they throw in something extreme--like unexpected tornadoes, floods in areas that usually don't or earthquakes. And now and then a bunch of those things happen in close time proximity. We're obviously going through an unsettled stretch, but as weather does, this will pass.

If ever there was a rose that we wish could have been saved...... You've gotten good advice above. I'm going to go a bit father. You need to check windflow in front of that porch. You also need to check upwind of that location and try to find an infected rose within a half mile of your place. That rose is so perfect there. You have memories with it and so many good feelings. I had a similar love for James Galway. And JG got RRV. And we dug it out. And I missed it enough that I replanted it after two years (multiflora rootstock which I know can persist.) If you have a bit of stubborness in you, this is what I'd do. I'd clear out some of the other plants near by / upwind to increase air flow. I'd replant Lassie next spring. And next fall I'd take cuttings and start replacement plants. I would consider this to be the right rose for that spot, and I'd be ready to replace it. Yes, your photo homage to it is that inspirational. For companion plants near it, I'd go heavy on Compositae (both for spring and fall and midsummer blooms). I'd put in the grass Miscanthus (based on some results that the Tennessee tests have seen up on the Plateau. If I had that great a photo of my Mother in front of a rose, I'd get really stubborn. (My replacement James Galway is up to the size of the one that got RRD and I did tweak the airflow, and so far, healthy.) Ann

That's really a dark orange and it looks like it will have a nice little ring around the stamens. Pretty!

But you're right, they should be 5 or 6 feet tall. The trouble is they only have flowers at the top (I've grown the big ones before) They just look out of scale unless you have some things in front of them, like Dahlias.

I think I am going to try Tithonia next year. Are there a lot of different varieties? Do they reseed a lot? They are annuals right?

Vera, take more photos as they continue to bloom. :-) Both very pretty photos.
