Strange / Funny WSing story

OK who can beat this one? I was given some Yellow Water Iris in the newbie seed give away, which I WSed in a 1/2 gallon milk jug. They sat there forever before I finally saw some green and removed the top. Well I can't remember if that green was a weed or this plant because I did get a weed or 2 in the jug also. One sprout didn't look like a weed so I let it go but for some reason. I still thought that it was just a weed yet be it a nice weed. Well thinking this thing was a weed I never transplanted it but because it could of been this Water Iris I did keep it good and watered even damp because on the web it says that these Water Irises like it real damp. Finally this week I noticed a bloom and low and behold my plant end up being a Million Bell! Now how could this be? The seeds that I planted were the size of watermelon seeds so I know that they weren't Bells. It did have some Bells next to it at the beginning of the season but would they have had any seeds that early on? Finally the dirt that I used was from a new area I just filled in late last year but as far as I can remember there was never any Million Bells even close to it. So did my Water Iris transform into a Million Bell or what?

I've decided that seeds sometimes just spontaneously materialize. How else can you explain the obedient plant blooming right now beside my salvia bed or the astilbe that has turned up in my woodland border? I've never planted either of those on this property....or even in this county! To my knowledge I have not had seeds or plants of either one for at least 4 years - and that was elsewhere.

Go figure.

I have one that is more strange than funny, but appropriate for a decorating forum. Many years ago, just before Christmas, my BIL and his wife remodeled their kitchen, using apples as a theme--dark red and forest green colors. My MIL called and told me that for Christmas she and FIL were buying BIL/SIL new dishes, to match their new kitchen. She described the dishes as having apples painted on them, with a dark green edge band. Then she said, "And we'd like to get you new dishes, too." I was thrilled, because I'd been thinking of buying a new set of dishes to replace our old odds-and-ends, but hadn't wanted to spend the money. I told my MIL this, and thanked her, and mentioned that either a cream color, or a light sage green would look good in my kitchen. MIL: "No, we're getting you the same dishes, with apples on them, because that's what FIL likes." Me: "But, we don't have anything with apples on it in our kitchen, and really, nothing red or forest green." (The kitchen had no theme--it was neutral with cream and tan, and some light blue-green vintage pottery.) MIL: "Well, that's what we're getting you, and I'm sure they'll be just fine." Me: "Um, OK, thank you. That's really nice of you." On Christmas I opened the package, thanked the in-laws again, then used the hated apple dishes for about a year and a half. One day when the in-laws showed up for family dinner, I put out my brand new cream and sage dishes, that I'd finally bought for myself, without saying a word. Neither of them ever mentioned my new dishes. I love my FIL and my late MIL, and that was so out of character for them, it still puzzles me. BTW, I packed away the apple dishes, until just recently, when my DD needed dishes for her new place. She was happy to see the familiar pattern, especially since the dishes came from her grandparents. :)

Coda took out the screen door this weekend. She was running around outside while my boyfriend barbequed and it was just starting to get dark. I went inside, closing the screen behind me and she came barreling, full beagle speed, after me. There is almost a perfect face in the door and she ripped all the screen out of the bottom of the door, doing it. She knocked it so hard it flew open, so she could walk right through. I don't think she even realises the screen was there, since it wasn't anymore when she went to go inside. Since then she paws at any open door she sees to check that the strange 'forcefield' she hit, isn't there, LOL. I accidentally left the bag of cat treats on the counter after giving the cats some. I left the room to come back and find resin on the counter chewing the bag. As soon as she saw me, she took off. But she took the bag of treats with her, and hid them in a corner I could barely get to, and then took off to hide herself. Also, the new cat litter I bought this week, comes in a bag simmilar to that of the resealable cat food bags. Well, resin will get into any bag of food left laying around. Dog food, cat food, human food, etc. She was getting into the litter, and I could see it. So I watched (I should've scolded, but I knew it would end up funny! and the litter is safe!) her, she got a hole in it, stuck half her face in it, and came hauling out of the laundry room with litter stuck to her whole face. She then proceeded to do a little routine mimicing that of dogs after a bath.

As everyone knows, beagles make excellent watch dogs and really horrible guard dogs. A man and his 3 or 4 year old son were walking by down our alley. My beagle started braying and spiking up because they had stopped to look at her. We went out and the man was laughing at her, and so was the kid. He asked his kid if he wanted to see the puppy and picked the kid up. Well as soon as the kid was up higher and she could see him better, she bolted. She was terrified. Came to stand behind my legs and bark and shake with her tail between her legs. The man and his son left, and I'll be darned if she didn't spend the rest of the night trying to 'track' the man and his son. She kept going back to the spot where they stood, sniffing the fence and following it all the way to where it meets the neighbors fence, over and over. I can't help but laugh at her, cause I know if she ever finds anything she's been trying to track, she'll tuck her tail and run the other way. She'd be the worst hunting beagle ever, I think. But she tries to do her job, thats for sure.

I sowed the last five seeds of my Thumbelina zinnia in a pot indoors thinking I would take it to my office to enjoy. Somehow the pot also sprouted a really nice dark purple petunia. None of the petunia seeds I ws'd sprouted. Go figure...

I summer sowed Sweet William a week or so ago. Right in the middle of the little seedlings is a daylily seedling looming high above them all. I didn't sow any daylily seeds in that container.

I WS some delphinium seeds from a trade. Had never seen delphinium seeds before so, figured that was it.

Come spring and blooms, I knew they weren't delphinium seedlings, but a post of the pics, told me I had annual pink babies breath.

No complaints, and sure didn't sow any pink babies breath, that is, any labeled seed packs of pink babies breath.

Oh, the godetia seeds where next to the viola yesterday, today and tomorrow. Not a godetia seedling planted, but sure did germinate the viola in the container.

Hm. maybe our WS seeds decide they like the container next to them better than the ones they are in. When we aren't looking they take a "leap of faith" and leap into the container beside them.

Perhaps the wind, a bird or seed in pet fur were the reasons you have had unusual "pop-up" plants. I have had it happen too and I find it delightful. I reuse my soil after it sits out all winter to kill bad bugs but then when I use it to "potup" plants I turn the soil and get my surprises. Fun treats!

Winter Sowing this year has been quite an adventure. My Geum mix turned out to be Violas, my Cerastium produced Shirley Poppies, and the only Larkspur seed which germinated turned out to be a tomato plant! I have never grown violas or Shirley poppies, and I wonder what variety the tomato will turn out to be. I have not had good success WSing tomatoes up here in Canada, so maybe this is the one I should grow.
