What else has the staying power of Brown Eye Susan

My brown eye Susans have been in bloom for sooooooo long. They are a bright spot that just won't stop. What else has the staying power like these??? What else can you suggest????

Heliopsis. Similar look to the Susans, a little taller and a little more yellow. Mine start blooming before the Susans and are still going strong. Lots of blooms and usually do not need staking.
Blue Flax for the Spring. Looks best in the morning as the blooms start to drop later in the day but mine were covered every day for over a month around May.
Gotta love those long bloomers. Such a letdown when you have to wait all year to see something bloom and 'poof' it's all over.

Melampodium. It's a heavy reseeder, too. Also verbena bonariensis and most zinnias.

Salvia coral nymph has been going strong all summer for me too, even in this heat and drought.

Okay, it's not growing so fast now -- I moved it from indoors under lights, to out in the cold over a month ago -- but the possibility of taking a cutting shouldn't be too far off. And you're right, it could still have that sort of vigor and be tetraploid. As it gets older, I hope for more clues. Of planned crosses with Saint Nicholas, 11 are now little plants, having survived infancy without sickness. I used mixed pollens, so I can't tell which are which yet, except for the mossy-looking ones (Salet, or *maybe* Chapeau de Napoleon). Most of the others look varying degrees of Damask, and most are probably from Pickering FS, but some may have to bloom before I can be sure which pollens took. There are also at least 5 Autumn Damask seedlings which look like they'll make it, and so much OP Single Musk that the culling process is ongoing. About thirty OP Grandma's Hat also germinated, but over 90% were sickly and/or misshapen. I don't know whether they're sickly because GH selfs badly, or whether GH makes sick babies regardless of the pollen used, but its promising start has definitely tarnished. One seedling of Tuscany Superb looks like it will make it. About thirty plants, all told. Others mostly haven't felt like germinating yet, if at all. No thanks to the squirrels, my dinky Saint Nicholas pretty much saved the year. I wish I had more of it! Since none of those seedlings can be expected to bloom this year, I'm now planning a bunch more F1s. And I have to say, the closer spring gets, the more I'm tempted to try an alternative direction, which I think aligns with yours. Although I absolutely will keep working on Damask Perpetuals, I realize that the odds of getting one to rebloom are low, and that even having a fine seed parent for them, might not be enough to make future breeders want to risk trying it. Chinensis rebloom is just SO much more within reach. So this year I'm hedging my bet, and will also try my hand at (gasp!) Hybrid Perpetuals. Breeders will include, to be sure, Alfred Colomb, Ardoisee de Lyon, "Barbara's Pasture Rose," Eugene de Beauharnais, Gloire des Rosomanes, Jacques Cartier, Reine des Violettes, Rose du Roi (of commerce), Salet (again), and Sydonie. It *may* include too modern Hugh Dickson, too sickly La Reine, or too sterile "Glendora." The basic idea will be the same -- boost female fertility in old roses -- but I would want to keep up the outcross-backcross process indefinitely, with the goal of bringing successive generations closer to the ancient European classes, and farther away from HPs. Early on, they might still be useful for breeding Bourbons, HPs, Austin types, or species crosses. So expect the next batch to include things like: Saint Nicholas x Reine des Violettes Gloire des Rosomanes x Saint Nicholas Tuscany Superb x Alfred Colomb Hebe's Lip x Jacques Cartier (When looking for some other information, I came across and re-read a Paul Barden blog from 10 years ago, in which he wished for something virtually identical to Indigo, which had just enough chinensis in it to ease the breeding of (at least slightly) remontant offspring. Although he intended to try it using Modern Shrubs and a different breeding methodology, the basic idea is the same. I'm using old roses for that job in an effort to restrict how modern descendants can look and smell, since glossy foliage and some other modern traits are dominant. While either approach could work, I'm hoping mine will quickly produce some useful results, since I don't feel quite young enough to try Paul's method for this particular job, and don't have the acreage to rush it.) Last year's Damask Perpetuals will be going on as before -- Pickering, Pink Leda, Autumn Damask, Duchess of Portland -- with Indigo and another Pickering plant joining the effort. Hebe's Lip will be getting a lot of pollen, as I suspect it's where SN got its female fertility from. Every year I try a few long shots, using tiny amounts of pollen from functionally sterile roses on my best seed parents, and will continue doing so. (Though it's way too early to be sure, one of my SN seedlings looks like it could be from Duchesse de Rohan pollen I put on it; it has foliage as oval as any of my Autumn Damask seedlings, but far less thorns. After years of failing with roses like that, this gives me hope!) My Single Musk is much happier lately, so it can expect a bunch of pollens, mainly directed at the moschata x gallica needed for a Damask do-over. If you like, I'll put some Gloire des Rosomanes pollen on it too, and send you any hips which result. If there's anything you'd love to see tried with things which I grow, and I've mentioned no intention of doing such crosses, let me know. Some of my roses, like Gloire des Rosomanes, will have a lot more flowers than I will have plans for.

Hi Susan! I absolutely agree with your approach! Too often you will see many people panic and run for the pesticide/insecticide/miticide or insecticidal soap/neem/etc. with little thought for the overall consequence of their actions. I know that God created every single creature for a reason, and this is true in the garden just as it is in the rest of the world. When a gardener tries to wipe out any given pest, they disrupt the food chain and throw everything off balance. Once your bug populations are out of balance, it is very easy for any given pest to overpopulate and become an actual problem (instead of being perceived as a problem just by their presence in the garden). Your example of the milkweeds, aphids and green lacewings is an excellent example. Suppose a butterfly lover were able to wipe out ALL the aphids. With no food to support their population, the green lacewings will either move on to an area with a good supply of food, or they will die. That butterfly gardener's entire garden is then more vulnerable to any bug infestation because the lacewings aren't around any more to keep other bug populations in check. So, obviously you have done the correct thing by letting the natural system work in your landscape. If I have learned anything at all from a lifetime of gardening, it is that the various insects will pretty much take care of each other. That's one reason I prefer to release beneficial insects...it is working within the natural system instead of outside of it. Could you and I ever convince some of those butterfly gardeners to let the aphids stay on the milkweed and then let the green lacewings take care of the aphids themselves?I doubt it. I think the whole 'working within the realm of nature and its cycles' thing is a unique wisdom a gardener acquires over time. Some people catch on to it sooner, some later, and some never. Does this mean that I don't panic when a specific bug population appears to be out of control? No. Of course I still get concerned. But I try to figure out first if there is an actual problem. I try to wait it out and see if nature will correct the situation (it usually does). I try to determine if the damage...like holes in leaves, for example,...is just something that is "visually unpleasant" or is actually damaging to the plant. And I have learned, through the years, that often the best action to take is "no action". So, I guess our approach is best thought of as working with nature, instead of against it, and how can that be wrong? Dawn (who is tired and will now climb down off her soapbox and stop ranting)

I think you can make some distinctions between "organizing" and simple daily cleanup that you might do as part of living in a family--doing the dishes, putting away laundry and so forth. --I know they're related in the sense that underlying order helps with maintenance and cleanup, but that's something for your own home; really, you don't need to clean out the attic in your parents' home or throw out their plastic containers. So it is definitely not healthy going into drawers and closets in attempt to "organize"--these actions are part of the parent-parent-child power struggle and you are seeing yourself in the wrong role. You might try a family meeting, but that could be hard without a neutral party such as a family counselor--it would be again, the 21-yr old being the family/marriage counselor. It could be done if you were able to use it simply to state your discomfort and what you feel comfortable doing vs. not, and to ASK for their support. You wouldn't be able to lay down any ultimatums, such as "you have to..." It sounds like you are already at a point at which you would need to have conversation with your dad alone, to some extent, in that you have identified him as a driving force requesting you to fix your mother--if you can't talk with your dad or if he doesn't "get it" in conversation with you alone, he won't get it in the presence of your mother. But, see, you would have to really WANT to stop being in the middle in order to propose to your father, here, I can do this and this, but I would prefer it if you would not ask or expect me to that and that. You could stay there if somehow you are able to change YOURSELF--to develop some serenity and distance from these struggles and just smile and fix an occasional meal, do daily and weekly chores as a good citizen of the family, and, if you really like organizing, graciously do so whenever your mother gives you a target drawer, etc (assuming she doesn't later accuse you of doing it wrong). Some people can manage a year like that. But, another approach as mentioned is to get out your pencil and paper and calculuate your way into moving out and continuing school on your own even if at a slower pace. You would be the one to know whether your father would be willing to discuss tuition or a loan if you move out. But, it can be done with or without their financial support. You could do either approach, and it's not completely wrong to stay to get tuition if you can manage all these other emotions and situations, but you can't really stay and stew about why your parents won't change. It isn't really good for your siblings to watch that dynamic, either, because it certainly won't be a successful strategy for them to follow as they get older. One of the reasons why protecting your siblings isn't a helpful rationale is that, under that reasoning, you would have to stay there until they all leave home.

Power brown-out stops new Miele Dishwashers?

My PC and connected equipment is on a UPS (uninterrupted power supply) in the bedroom for years (actually replaced it with a new UPS a few years ago). And latst year before the hurricane came through, I had another UPS that I connected to the Plasma TV, cable box and stuff in the living room. Even though we never lost power durring the hurricane, I could hear both UPS boxes click over to battery backup if the voltage dropped too low. Which brings me to my point: The original Miele Dishwasher that I had for 8 year. If it was doing a wash cycle and the power went out completely or if there was a low voltage brown out, and then the power returned to normal, the unit would come back on and start washing from where it left off with no input from me. The refrigerator, clothes washing machine, and AC will all return to their task when power is restored. Keeping all of that in mind, two nights ago around 1am I had started the new Miele and had it set on the Pots Pans cycle, which does 2 prewashes before the main wash. I went into the living room and was watching a program. About 10 min later the living room lights dimmed down, the ceiling fan speed slowed, and the AC blower slowed, all of which lasted for maybe 2 seconds max. But the voltage didn't drop low enough for the UPS connected to the TV to kick in (as I can hear the click). A little bit later I went back into the kitchen, the clock on the stove and on the microwave was not reset (which happens after a full loss of power) but the dishwasher was still powered On, but the green Start light was flashing. I opened it up, and it's sitting there full of water during the prewash, since the tab door wasn't open. I pressed Start and only then did it resume washing. The following day I tried a test, had it start a load, and I unplugged the power cord for 2 seconds and plugged it back in. Same thing happened, it just sits there with the Start light flashing. On my old Miele if I had done that, it would of started washing again. So that's my real question and concern. Why would Miele go from making a dishwasher that would resume the wash cycle after a power loss (or brown out), to making ones that will just sit there indefinitely until you press Start again? Like I said before, what if I was asleep when this happened, or not at home, and hours later return to the kitchen and there is sits hours later full of water with the cycle unfinished. I guess the only way around it would be to have a UPS plugged in under the kitchen sink and then plug the Miele into it? That way if there is any minor power disruption, the Miele won't lose power.

Well, I know they are common as corn but my dh really LOVES marigolds so we have a lot of them and they are just unstoppable. They are so colorful and totally undemanding. A lot of ours are splotched with red so they contrast at least a bit with the black eyed susies (they are in a bed in front of them). Too bad you can't get them in really different colors.

Amaranth, rudbeckias of all other varieties, nicotiana, mexican hat, phlox (will rebloom with deadheading, and can be pinched to maintain near continuous bloom), and russian sage in yards other than mine.

Ditto on the BES- Have you tried "Indian Summer?" A huge-bloomed, FAT PETALLED BES with an orangey halo around the center. Gorgeous! Oh, and it's a knockout with Chocolate Joe Pye weed next to it. In the right evening lighting, it absolutely GLOWS!

Melampodium is in its 2nd year at my house, and I love it. Was compact in year 1, and is 3-4 feet this year. Took some seed for trades, and sprinkled some around for next year, and left some for the birds to peck on.

Next...Zinnias & Marigolds...love both!

My long time bloomers have been.....

Callicarpia (million bells) I have two that have been blooming almost two entire years now - they do slow down in the winter with sporadic blooms on warm spells but from March on till late December they bloom all the time

Homestead Verbena - again stays green all year and will bloom sporadically in the winter and puts on a fabulous show spring/summer/fall

Dianthus - I have a tri-colored one that will also give me pretty much year round bloom

I would love to get all these into one garden bed for that punch of color year round but afraid to upset the balance of nature. Evidently each plant LOVES where they are currently planted

I have one stelladoro' daylily that has been blooming pretty much non-stop since mid May

Gillardias - Golden Goblin and the wild flower species - just blooms and blooms......

My cleome has been in bloom for over a month. Whole patch has been reseeding for years. So no seed starting. Also no deadheading - something I am finding is a huge time saver as I scan the garden every day for zinnias,phlox, mexican sunflower and others that will stop blooming if they are not deadheaded. The blooms on the cleome just last and last in the garden (not so if you cut them though;can't seem to get them do do well in a vase)

Marigold for me too. And my favorite is Lemon Gem.
My Petunia 'Laura Bush' is also a strong bloomer. It is not showing any sign of stopping.

What actually is Brown eye Susan? Which Rudbeckia is it? If it is R. hirta, mine is petering out. 'Goldsturm' has been blooming since the end of June. I am getting tired of it now, though. So bright yellow. In the face yellow.

Mine are still blooming great and have been for a long time now. My echinacea are blooming too. The new one "Sundown" is still gorgeous and still putting out new blooms. I have a sweet little fern leaf bleeding heart that just won't quit and my Hollywood geranium still has blooms but not a lot. I have butterfly blue scabiosa that is still blooming and multiple day lilies ( I try really hard to get repeat blooming daylilies). The zinnias are doing great too. This is the first year I have grown them and they will now be a staple in my gardens. I think my may night salvia would have bloomed again if I had cut it back. I may still try that because although the weather seems like the end of season we really should have about 8 more weeks of summery weather. Long time bloomers....I love them.

My common Heliopsis helianthoides (False Sunflower) just started blooming, and as I recall last year it was around the same time, but these late summer/fall blooms keep coming for a long time. It's about 5' tall and love them solid yellow blooms!
My Rudbeckia hirta are by far the longest lasting....on and on and on with little to no watering or care period. Also Verbena bonariensis, Profusion Zinnia, Echinacea, Petunia, Blue Flax a good part of the spring and again summer and fall if you cut them back by half. Coreopsis spp. are another good'in for lasting power :D
