Arizona Cutting Garden

I hope I have researched this forum well enough to ask my question so I apologize if it is there already! Anyway, I absolutely love cutting off my roses and bringing them inside to enjoy as well as out. Does anyone have any other ideas of plants or flowers that would do well in Arizona for a cutting garden? I was thinking of snap dragons but those I could just do in our cooler months. Thank you all for the help.

A successful cutting garden will need a variety of plants throughout a long growing season so I would suggest planting beds with similar water, soil and fertilizing needs. A bed of iris rhyzomes, a bed of early and mid-spring blooms like hyacinths, paperwhites and freesia, seed beds for zinnias, marigolds and bachelor buttons. Roses don't like to share water, soil or nutrients and the amount of water for a rose bush would drown bulbs. Other plants, like lavender, have aggressive root systems that choke out competing plants. Some herbs, like rosemary, can attract or repel pests. Large shrubs and trees, like formosas, elms and jacarandas should be planted away from roses. Oleanders and eucalyptus are best harvested from a neighbor, lol, as they can severely prohibit growth of any other plant, especially roses. Several rosarians also have clematis which are gorgeous in late spring bouquets. Buddleia rarely makes it through two summers for me but the lilac-style blooms are lovely. Crepe Myrtle, too.

Rose arrangers tend to plant or harvest a variety of non-flowering leaves, sticks and grasses. The local rose societies offer arrangement classes about once a year that focus on mass, oriental and line arrangements.

Roselee, Didn't want to hijack your thread into a discussion on glyphosate, so that linked article was sort of an oblique confirmation of your doubt that "glyphosate disappears from the soil very quickly." In fact, in Monsanto's own words: "...the tight binding of glyphosate to agricultural soils effectively prevents significant root uptake by nearby plants." This is what enables that nice ability of almost immediately replanting a treated area. Residual/cumulative glyphosate is not likely to be an issue for most home gardeners, but the research and debate in the agricultural space is moving me to become a bit more conservative in its use. The fact that non-targeted plants can be damaged when their roots are intermingled with targeted plants in small containers or the glyphosate becomes mobile in hydroponics is pretty well accepted. But it's reasonably argued that these are not representative of most yard or field growing environments. The exception is the warning shouted on the Roundup usage sheets about what several of us have advised: PRECAUTIONS, RESTRICTIONS: DO NOT MAKE CUT STUMP APPLICATIONS WHEN THE ROOTS OF ADJACENT DESIRABLE TREES MAY BE GRAFTED TO THE ROOTS OF THE CUT STUMP. INJURY RESULTING FROM ROOT GRAFTING MAY OCCUR IN ADJACENT TREES.... Adjacent trees having a similar age, height and spacing may signal shared roots. Whether grafted or shared, injury is likely to occur to non-treated stems/trees when one or more trees sharing common roots are treated. So, might not use it on a stump in a grove of similar aged oaks, but not likely to be an issue in your situation. Planting a new tree within 3 or 4 feet of the stump shouldn't be a problem as our own experience has shown... well, other than digging the hole through the roots of the old tree.

Hi - I think you might be able to get common pink, yellow, white, and light pink from Florida Colors Nursery. They probably have plants that are very reasonable. I purchased common plumerias there when I first started out and they were $6.00 each fully rooted - no names. Google their site and write them. Tell them you are new and they will help you. Tell them you don't want to spend a lot of money and would be happy with common varieties. They ship to AZ. As for AZ and Hawaii - Arizona is worried about aphids coming into our state. Normally, if you cut your own plumeria cuttings, you'll need to bring them to the Ag station which is located by the airports and have them inspected. Call them first and ask what to do. They'll look them over then let you pack them, so bring a box and tape, and they stamp them as inspected. You can then bring them into AZ. The link posted is the very MOST you will have to do. If your cuttings are very clean and free of any scale and dirt, the inspectors will inspect them and stamp them okay. HTH Here is a link that might be useful: Bringing Cuttings From Hawaii To AZ

I cut them all the time. Just plant more and you won't be able to tell you cut them! Picked a bunch for my mom the other day. I used to take big bouquets in to work, started when my boss got back from Hawaii and was missing it. I took in a big bunch of shell ginger, yarrow, etc. They all loved them. I didn't used to but I would go buy cut flowers. One day I was looking at them at the store and realized I had a lot of the same stuff in the yard. So I bought a plant with the twenty bucks I was gonna spend on flowers and went home & picked my own. I had a contest at work and did a bouquet of toxic plants. The best response Danny got 6 out of 25 right. Considering I worked for poison control I thought that was not good! Tally HO!

November is THE Fall rose month. There is a rose show in Tucson, Nov 6, another at Mesa Community College on Nov 19 and yet another at ASU West on Nov 26. These are open to the public and free of charge. Hundreds of roses, grown locally, cut at the peak of their beauty and all in one or two rooms, alone or in arrangements. Rose Heaven...

There is a Garden Tour in Glendale on Nov 12... six gardens, snacks and a BBQ dinner $25.00.

Dec 4 is the Winter Tea at the Valley Garden Center on 15th Ave and includes a docent tour of the public garden with full tea service, raffles and information for $10.00 per person.

Rosarians tend to grow a variety of plants besides roses and many rose society members enjoy showing off their hard work, whether cut for exhibition or left on the bush for a tour. The societies are educational social non-profit organizations. Membership is about the cost of a rosebush but not mandatory for participation in events.

The Mesa Community college rose garden out front of the school is just amazing! We eat at a Mexican restaurant across the street and I just love to look at the garden.
I may just have to go to that rose show.

I've never had the patience to plan, then tend a true cutting garden, but love to have bachelor buttons in the spring. There are so many beautiful flowers for spring that we can seed this fall!
