Can fuchsias be wintersown?

Hello I was just wondering can fuchsias be wintersown. And also what does the ripened seed pod look like. I know what the seed pod itself looks like but how can you tell when it is ripe enough to harvest the seed. And how does one go about harvesting the seeds. Thanks

Any seed pod should be ready when its brown and looks like its ready to burst open. You can collect it by just cutting it off and putting it on a paper plate a cup or a paper sack which ever you prefer and then bring it inside and let it dry for a few days.

As far as the wintersowing part I am not sure about but you could always try it I am very new to winter sowing but me personally I would give it a shot. You dont have to sow all of your seeds just keep some that you would like to winter sow and then a backup just in case.

Thanks Sharon! I'm planning to wait until early-mid March give or take for most of my stuff anyways. I was thinking that if I had to do these inside I would need another table infront of the window! LOL Ang

I grow both of these along with many others. The hardy magellanicas are bushes planted in the ground in full sun -- when well-fed and watered over the summer, it is loaded with flowers and attracts many hummers. On colder winters, they sometimes die back to the ground but sprouts fast when it warms up. I grow the upright Gartenmeisters in big pots. It is less hardy and needs care to overwinter, which I don't bother since I can buy well-rooted starts in 2" pots for 50 - 99 cents in spring. If you can't find them locally, you might consider mail-order... I did a google search and a dozen vendors popped up. Also, don't forget plants that are similar to Gartenmeister, like Koralle or Firecracker. Look for red or orange triphylla types. Firecracker is particularly nice with its variegated foliage, and looks great with white tuberous begonias. I like to grow upright fuchsias with trailing types at their base. A nice combo is Koralle or Gartenmeister in the center with Autumnale and magellanica aurea at their base, with sweet alyssum or salmon impatiens as fillers. (Autumnale has gorgeous red/orange/lime green leaves, magellanica aurea is lime/yellow leaves.)

a pic of the whole .. plus some relevant history would help ... is it potted... where are you.. weather.. watering.. etc ... whether or not its a bug problem.. often.. stressed plants are found by bugs and disease ... but if you dont solve the primary reason for the stress .. it might not help to solve the secondary issue ... since its about to flower .. it might be hard to spray remedies on it.. without destroying all the flowers .... so you might be in a real catch 22 ... more info plz ... ken

Is this the same plant? Fuchsia thymifolia and/or Fuchsia microphylla

According to the book "Fuchsia Species" by Dave Green, they are different. There are subspecies listed for both. On a very quick look for differences in the descriptions I find that microphyla is characterized by branchletts at right angles, tube 7 to 10 mm long. Thymifolia is characterized by white ampliate tube, buds with divergent tips. tubes 2 to 5 mm long. The description varies a lot among subspecies, and there are natural hybrids between the two species. If you can find a copy of the book you can dig deeper. I've spent several weeks trying to identify a couple plants I have.
