More Newbie WS Pictures

Some more pictures of things blooming this month that were wintersown (or "springsown") this year. Thought others might like to see some of the perennials/biennials because everyone always asks what will bloom the first year. I was shocked that some of these perennials bloomed...many are still very small.

My babes!

This is a picture from yesterday of the 13 monarch cats I raised from eggs collected on my wintersown butterfly weed, swamp milkweed, and scarlet milkweed. Tonight they are hanging upside down getting ready to pupate.

Yes the red leaves are normal healthy new growth. Now you have to prune the roses ... Do you know what type of roses they are? If they are Hybrid teas they need to be pruned fairly hard down to perhaps only a feet or 2 or even more. But you can also wait to see the roses bloom and then find out what roses they are? Do find a good rose book that will give you some idea of how to prune roses with pruning shears or scissors. I would also give the roses some fertilizers if you have not already done that. Preferably some organic pellet fertilizers. Just Keep asking ... we all have to start somewhere, and many here will gladly help you. Niels

It's not too late! I'm in your zone but in North Georgia. I've just started winter sowing this past week. I also have red clay. Red clay is usually high in nutrients but lacking in organic matter. You should be able to drastically improve your soil with adding organic matter. I've found the best way to improve my clay soil is laying down builders paper and or cardboard and then covering with a thick mulch of things like straw, hay, leaves etc. The worms will show up under the paper and start breaking it all down and aerating the hard clay underneath and bringing organic matter into it. I also do raised beds but I don't want my whole yard raised beds iykwim. With my raised beds I've just had truckloads of landscapers mix brought in. The clay will take some time to improve though. I'm working on improving most of my yard and it's an acre. The soil was worse than average with all the topsoil having been scraped off and not even grass would grow in most places. :/ I've ordered from Diane's, Swallowtail Seed's and Fedco Seeds this winter. Fedco sells more vegetable seeds but I really like their flower and herb selection because they do have some good things and they offer a LOT of seed for far less than the average asking price. So I buy flower seed from them every year when I order my vegetable garden seeds. My plan this year is to start focusing on seed saving though so I don't have to buy so darn much! Thanks all for the compliments on my pics. love all the others too. WS is the way to go. Just so you don't think that's all I had WS. Here's a list of 5 years of WS, soon to start #6. All of these are growing in my yard as perennials, though the annuals are gone now from the hard freeze. Snow will be falling soon here in MA. I'm zone 5 and go down as low as below zero, about 20 minute drive to the NH border. I ws with lids and without lids using a plastic bag with holes poked in it. Both work well. Holes are needed in the top to let in rain/snow/air and in the bottom to drain. In your area saran wrap should be okay. I like a heavier plastic for the snow that accumulates on tops here. For those wo lids I slip the s.box into a large plastic bag (those large bags from tp at Costco) with holes in the tops and the bottom of the bag and use clothes pins to keep it closed or put excess bag under neath and weight of box keeps it closed. This works great with extra 4" plastic pots, seed trays, cups and other containers.

I love your CATS!! Oh, they are so cute. Looks like they are having a meeting to decide who's going to hang where. :O)

Just brought two more in last night. The first brood had to be left outside since I was going away for a few days.

Have fun releasing them!

Oh, and that last photo of your gardens is WOWSERS!!

Excellent photos! My favorites are the Rudbeckias and the Dahlia. Did you WS the Dahlia this year, or do you grow them from tubers? If they bloom the first year, I may try wintersowing them, but I don't want to fool with lifting and storing tubers every fall.

Those cats sure are so cool! I've got 3 clumps of Butterfly Weed, but so far, no cats here.

Molanic, absolutely beautiful! What a pleasure to look at your pictures. Those cats are adorable. This is my first year raising Monarchs, my oldest babies are only 3rd instar, and starting to eat and poop like little piggies.

You might be a newbie to WS, but it doesn't look like you're a newbie to gardening! (I've been gardening over 20 years, but WS for only 1/2).

Love that picture of all the annuals together. Your scarlet runner bean is so lush. What are you using as a trellis?

Thanks everyone. I have been having so much fun this year with all the new ws plants and especially with the caterpillars. It is amazing that even simple plants like the ws marigolds for the tomato bed are so much larger, healthier, and full of blooms than any I have ever bought.

The dahlias were springsown from seed (Burpee I think, don't know if it is a hybrid). They are all different colors and only about 10" tall with 2" blooms. I am going to try saving seed and digging the tubers both in the fall.

The scarlet runner beans we have always grown on bamboo teepees but they all were rotten this year so I put some at the base of a windmill. At first it chopped the tendrils all up, but one calm day the tendrils got hold and locked it down :)
