Comments (7)Last summer, while all of the others were growing lush and beautiful, Lemon Lime just limped along and resisted all efforts to jump-start it. To boot, when it came time to bring them in, a night of unexpectedly low temperatures frosted them (none were much damaged and all bloomed fine in the end, just to set you all at ease right away...), and the LL foliage took it particularly badly, quickly getting yellow-mushy and falling off. Still, just before Christmas, LL put up its first scape, quickly followed by a second. A third poked out just as #2 was finishing, and about a month after #3 was done, a fourth appeared. All of this from a bulb that had shrunk to about the size of a large plum. The last one only had 2 flowers, but it just goes to prove, when all is said and done, how hard it is to fail with these tough, forgiving plants. This summer, LL is growing like mad, and has a couple of offsets. Go figure. Probably means no flowers for me this winter... - Steve...See MoreBent Scapes
Comments (14)Haweha, Your attack is unfounded. No matter how speculative my statement seems to you, I was talking of my EXPERIENCE, not writing a fairy tale. At least 50% of cybisters sooner or later broke up a scape, probably due to this narrow neck. It happened to me with newly purchased bulbs. Chico just finished blooming for me, and it was a second year bulb, and this time, since I cut the leaves higher on the bulb when I prepared it to dormancy, the neck of the bulb was not cut narrow. Right now, I have Merenque blooming as well. It is a second year bulb as well and all the three scapes are standing firm and strong. So I must derive that when growers cut the necks very low, as the bulb material dries, it hardens the neck and makes it probable that future scapes simply snap off because of this narrow passage... Well handled bulbs in following year though seem to overcome this problem if the neck is prepared in a more careful manner. I have not experienced snapped off scapes from other hybrids that do not tend to produce very narrow bulb neck. And I guarantee that these bulbs are not sick. All the leaves and scapes coming from the bulb are clean and healthy. This is the end of today's speculations. See you tomorrow....See MoreMore Exotic Star, this time from Mn
Comments (21)Thanks for the compliments all. I think ES is a great hippie, one of my most favorites. I think it's true the flowers look lighter when in front of the window. Also this ES has recieved no supplemental light since coming up from the basement(beyond what comes in the window). I think Cindee gets to give hers outdoor light(stronger) and I'm not sure whether Jodi grows hers under the plant lights, but that prob would affect color. I hope your eye recovered Jodi, I'm so thankful to have sweet kitties living with me. (my boyfriend discovered he's allergic, so no kitties in bedroom or TV room.) I pollinated this ES with Santos, Papilio, Night Star and itself. I hope I get some pods!...See MoreScapes! Scapes!
Comments (10)I have no scapes (at least, not yet - I'm beginning to think anything may happen), but I have had two DLs come out of what I understand is called "summer dormancy" about 3 weeks ago. I have 3 in pots - the one that is semi-evergreen bloomed a bit in late spring. Another (a Dormant type)gave me one bloom, and the third (also a Dormant type) gave me NONE. I don't hold it against them, as I ordered them from Vermont, and I think moving to Central California was too much for them. I had great hopes for next Spring, though - but now I just don't know. If they went into dormancy in the summer and came out of it in early Fall, what will happen this Winter? Let alone next Spring! They look healthy, and in fact all of them have new fans coming up. But I'm worried that all this unexpected behavior means they will be so out of sync with the seasons that they won't be able to cope with the winter weather (we are supposed to have a milder Winter than last year, but I'm not counting on it, and last Winter was a killer!) Can anyone enlighten me on this? I'm just a rank beginner......See Moremarlon2009
