This happens very often indoor plants for even leaves but most often for flowering stalks or those that are weeks into forming seed pods. I'll get home from work or wake up in the morning and see the whole thing flopped over. Usually after securing it to something vertical, it will get it firm again within a day. Just my theory, this seems to affect new growth area (very fresh green) where the bulb meets the stem. The stem keeps growing at a much slower pace once it flowers and sets seed. The new growth isn't firm enough to support the heavy weight above and at a certain point everything just flops over. I'm just a newbie this Winter and this hasn't happened on any of my Amaryllis kept outdoors so I think the cool California nights slow growth enough and the warm summer days provide enough sunlight to firm the stem and keep it from flopping.

OK, if you do not water, the scapes and leaves will get floppy, no doubt. Also, you need to repack the soil as the bulb gets spent because you will get a void as the bulb shrinks when its stored energy gets used up, this is normal. As to pots flopping over, I personally after many years of cultivating this plant, have finally decided that bigger is definitely better with regards to Amaryllis pots. If your pot is light enough to allow the plant to tip over, then you need to replant.

If the bulbs were newly planted they may not have grown good roots yet.

All good ideas, but this isn't the bulb which is shifting, this is the flower scape/stem which is bending at the bulb juncture. Roots are in good shape and the soil is fairly compact.
I'm back to lack of turgidity probably due to a need for more water.

I experience bent scapes sometimes as well, but it seems like they happen with bulbs that happen to have very narrow necks, so by the time the flower comes along, the long stem seems not to be able to hold the weight on the bulb due to the aforementioned narrow opening thus narrow scape bottom.

I haven't had this happen to anything with fresh blooms, but I do stake anything that looks like it might need it. As they fade or are aborting seed pods they bend... but at that point, they're on their way out.

I didn't notice if the necks were narrow... I'll have to watch next time.

Most of the cybisters have this narrow kind of neck that kind of snaps the bottom of the scape off thus forcing the scape to bend and even snap off.
I mean it is not a rule. It just happens a lot with cybisters, because of this narrow neck.

Luckily, I never experienced bent scapes in cybisters
Presently I have 15 bulbs 3 y old, bloomable seedlings of the cybister hybrid grex H.cybister "Chico" x "Giraffe" with a total of 22 scapes emerging out of these long, narrow necks, and none of them scapes shows any abnormality in shape.

Generally if I hear "bent scapes" then my alarm clocks are ringing because I think of the effect of a damage performed by tarsonemid mites.
However, this might not apply, and therefore a picture would be highly appreciated.
However, if on the inner side of the bent scape a regular arrangement of brown and red streaks can be perceived then the diagnosis is already confirmed.

If the scapes look entirely healthy then I presume that they are simply growing towards the light from a window.

After re-reading this thread, regrettably after having invested the time for explanation and particularly searching for my older picture of "leaf damaged by tarsonemid mites" I now have to become aware that you dug up a thread which is already two y old, solely to attach your rather speculative statements. If you could, at least, have included a confirming picture for underlining that what you "described"

Sir Hans, your cybister crosses are absolutely lovely, and I'm glad you located this picture to post!

Whenever I see any sign of mites, as you describe and show above, I always spray with a miticide right away. It seems to be working, as the red marks do not appear on new growth.

As for the bending scapes... I believe mine may be caused by inferior light, and they do tend to lean toward the window!

Your attack is unfounded. No matter how speculative my statement seems to you, I was talking of my EXPERIENCE, not writing a fairy tale. At least 50% of cybisters sooner or later broke up a scape, probably due to this narrow neck.
It happened to me with newly purchased bulbs. Chico just finished blooming for me, and it was a second year bulb, and this time, since I cut the leaves higher on the bulb when I prepared it to dormancy, the neck of the bulb was not cut narrow. Right now, I have Merenque blooming as well. It is a second year bulb as well and all the three scapes are standing firm and strong.
So I must derive that when growers cut the necks very low, as the bulb material dries, it hardens the neck and makes it probable that future scapes simply snap off because of this narrow passage...
Well handled bulbs in following year though seem to overcome this problem if the neck is prepared in a more careful manner.
I have not experienced snapped off scapes from other hybrids that do not tend to produce very narrow bulb neck.
And I guarantee that these bulbs are not sick. All the leaves and scapes coming from the bulb are clean and healthy.

I did not perceive that anyone one was trying to attack, just telling it from 'their' experience, and I surely feel that no harm was intended.

In recent years, I have accumulated numerous cybisters, and my experience is that I have never had any of their scapes break. However, Emerald is really bad about growing its scape horizontally, and if you need a picture, I can take one of a current scape that is totally horizontal with two pods.

I can assure you that Emerald is doing this because I have it on an upper shelf and it is not getting enough light.

Obviously, I am speaking about newly purchased bulbs. My cybisters, IF they go dormant will do so on their own. I do not cut them back at all.

I remember receiving a Lima that was rottev at the neck. I cut it back severely to remove the rot. Unfortunately, in doing so, I cut off the tip of the bud, but the resulting blooms were uneffected. The scape did not bend or break.

They are not breaking in following years anymore. I only had this break off with newly purchased bulbs. And yes, Emerald was one of them.
