The power of winter-sowing, before and after pictures

These are picture from last year and this year. Some plants are not winter-sowed but lots of them are. Shrubs like butterfly bushes, rose of Sharon, and hibiscuses are still small, but already planted in their permanent spots. All I need now is patience to watch them grow.

I did something very similar in 2003. Just around thanksgiving with our first snow, I broadcasted out the prairie seeds over a 60x15 prepared area. No mulch, no amendment and the blanket of snow was my protection from birds. Also by this time the mice/voles ect. are housed up for the winter. My seed (flowers/grasses) were individually ordered from reputable native seed suppliers...no walmart mixes just for the simple fact you usually can't find any that do not contain a few non-native noxious/invasive species...like Dames Rocket, Bachelor's Button and Baby's Breath for example; two of which are on our local monitor list and one which made it too the noxious weed list.

Looking closely at the photo above you can see a fern frond near the ground close to the top 'Sweet Tea'. That is a baby ostrich fern, something I have been pulling out like a weed for the past three years. They are beautiful large plants that spread underground, like bamboo. they are also perfectly round, taking up a huge space, and if happy, grow too dense to easily see through. Japanese Painted ferns are stunning. They grow 2' x 2' and hug the ground. You can't really put anything under them, but they are everywhere in my garden, and multiple happily. I love them next to black and orange heuchera. The picture show then against a wall with Autumn ferns and a lady fern.

Thats the best part about plumeria growing. During the winter you can just store them in any random place as long as it stays above freezing and in march or early april you can just put it by a south facing window and let them grow before being taken outside in the summer. My plumeria is about 3 feet tall and flowering for the 1st time now, but usually they flower around 2 to 2 1/2 feet tall. It sounds like you might be lucky enough to get some blooms next spring or maybe mid summer or next year, maybe even this year if you have a dedicated plant. I cant wait until my desert rose blooms, but it looks like im going to have to wait until next year becuase its still a seedling (with 7-9 growing tips most less than an inch tall), but it does have a swollen trunk which is a good start. I wish that stores by me sold plants as nice as a desert rose, but they would probably be gone in a day if they were blooming. Also... I can only imagine what you can grow if you had zone 7 temperatures. You would probably have date palms and tropical hibiscus surviving outside in the ground!! Your yard is very nice, and defiantely not your typical zone 4. Very tropical. Great job and good luck.

This is the kitchen that has been in my brain for at least 10 years, and here you have gone and done it perfectly!!! I'm going to Pinterest the bejebbers out of it as inspiration photos for the coming renovations (as soon as I finish all these pesty bathrooms!). Seriously, I have wanted a 4 oven Aga plus a module for ages. I already have the full 601 fridge & freezer (so a little bigger than your Subzero.) And I plan to put a big barrel hood over it all. And you have a big island with not huge aisles! And you have soapstone! I really think we're channeling the same frequencies. I'm totally in love with your butler's pantry! We didn't inherit one, but I may use the cabinet sliding door idea for the walk-thru pantry I'm planning. It solves my problem of a tight space and not really wanting all open shelves! Ok, I'm off to study this kitchen more deeply! Truly, I know this reveal is several years past now, but wow just the same! Great job! Always ;-) Hunzi

Thank you everyone for the kind words.
Carol, you are not doing anything wrong, just have patience for the perennials. Last year when I moved here, I brought with me the winter-sowed seedlings, planted them, and they stayed small and not much blooms from them. This year I sowed annuals too, so that's why it looks full. I had so many seedlings that now, three other neighbors have lots of flowers blooming from what I shared with them.
In the first 2 pictures from last year, you can see the shape in the grass where I wanted to put another flower bed, and continue with the path, but my husband wanted some grass, and honestly I think it would have looked too busy that way.

I made the cement leaves using rhubarb leaves, and that column is made with hypertufa. My hosta leaves were too small last year, so I made smaller cement leaves and gave them away to neighbors and friends.

Ever wonder what it would cost for a professional gardener/landscaper to do that???? Priceless!!!

Tiffy, you were my inspiration with your last post where you gave us a nice tour of your garden. Beautiful place you have!

If you can believe, the path and the patio stones are made from recyclable materials. Digging in the garden I unburied the flag stones, and the bricks and cement stones were found in the bushes across the street where more than 50 years ago a brick factory was closed down.

We did unearth a few huge boulders, when we built our house,Love them.Really Big ones.
I may have to do some of the leaves this winter,I would love a whole path of them, you really did a nice job, how thick are they?
And, you made the colum also?How did you get the design on it, can you post a closeup?
I keep going back,and looking.

Carol, how are you going to keep the fresh leaves over the winter? I made mine with fresh leaves. They are one and a half inches thick.

Oh my, what a difference a year makes! It is absolutely beautiful and looks so lush and healthy. I bet your hubby is so proud of you. And I bet your neighbor's love having all those flowers shared with them. Did you plant them for them or they planted themselves?

I'm wondering where are these leaves everybody is talking about and I scrolled back over and found them. Neato! Now who do I know that has big leaves like that. What about elephant ear leaves? I think I could talk a man out of one of his big leaves.

Such dramatic changes in before and after photos! I was expecting to see a bunch of small seedlings, and a few blooms, but instead was treated to gorgeous, established looking beds.

You did a great job with plant placement too. I'm on year 4 of wintersowing, and I still end up with things at the front that are too tall, and need to be moved.

Pippi, I too had to go back and look for the leaves, LOL. Love them!
