Some pics of my water lilies

Hi everyone,

Just thought I'd share a couple of photographs of some water lilies in bloom for me this week. Some are from our own gardenweb friends (Judy and others) and some are from Lowe's (purchased as leafless tubers) or online (same).

Take a look if you're curious. I potted them in water-plant soil in water-plant "baskets", and plopped them in my little fountain/water feature and give them full sunshine and a monthly tablet of water plant fertilizer. So far, so good. Some are tropical, and some are hardy. All are lovely, if you ask me. I think #3 is 'Chromatella' from Judy?? I've got five other varieties budding up, so I'm really excited about these.

Anyway, thanks to everyone who shared their plants, and their knowlege, about these fun plants. I'm definitely hooked!

Okay, okay, this one isn't a water lily, but it's got very similar leaves (which aren't in this pic) and a similar growth habit (it's Nymphoides geminata, sometimes called "yellow snowflake").

Sorry Grant, none of those are Chromatella,which is yellow, though they are all lovely. Is the second one Dauben?

It's still alive as long as the stalks are green and flexible, so there is still hope, even though it's very close to dying. Does the pot it's in now have drain holes? It is important that the water can drain out well. Peace lilies are kind of fussy about watering. They don't like to dry out for long periods, but they also will rot if they stay soggy all the time. I would suggest checking it by putting a finger in the soil every day and water it when you notice that the soil is mostly dry. That way you can water it before it starts to droop but still give it time to "breathe" by allowing it to mostly dry out. Can you open the blinds so it can get all the light from that window? Most likely it is not getting enough light right now with the blinds down. Knowing what direction the window faces would help in determining how close to the window it should be.

How did you make the flower part. I could use some of these in the koi pond. They eat any live plants that I put in with them, even the ones in the netting are eaten when the roots grow through.

Thanks everyone for all the compliments. My floating baskets aren't doing too good this year. Don't know if it's the weather or my koi (now that they are bigger they are able to tip the basket with their body just enough to nibble. They remind me of deer they don't eat the whole plant just enough to stress it out). I heard a rumor it could be my water is too clean. Pond is in it's third year so it may be fully cycled now. Don't know if any of you read Nosambos (Lisa's) post earler this month so I am linking it to mine. She is so creative she can turn anything that floats into a planter as you can see from her post. I just love visiting her pond because I never know what she has created that is going to surprise me. I got 4 large sheets of styrofoam pads from work. They are about 3 ft long by 1 1/2 ft wide. I am planning on connecting them together with computer cable ties. I am going to try to make a large floating impatiens, watercress island out of them by cutting holes in the pads and placing punctured styrofoam cups in the holes (hopefully this will make them koi proof), then placing impatiens and watercress bare root in the styrofoam cups. It may work unless my koi decide to tip it over. (They completely destroyed one floating basket of watercress in a day). I will post pics if it does work. I am just wondering if I should surround it by pond noodles to make it more stable. Only problem will be getting it in and out of the pond. My pond is in full sun and my fish have no shade other than the floating planters you see in the post here. As they are getting bigger their shade is getting smaller. How beautiful! Your "new" pond is apparently balanced and very happy. Congratulations! Aren't they wonderful? Such a breath of fresh air, er, water in our desert environment. I see you are now ready for another, they are pretty addicting.

Now do tell, how many water lilies have you planted in your 6' pond? Have you found any other sources here in Phx besides Lowes for water plants? I would love to get some water hycinth but haven't found any pond shops carrying it so far. The last time I got some, it was from the old Tip Top down on Bell near 32nd but they are no longer there now.

How many fish do you have and have you had any toad visitors now that the monsoons are here? This past week we had many come to our pond for mating. I went out one night to see what all the racket was about and found 3 couples, well, coupling, plus a couple of lone rangers croaking to attract their own mate! X rated ponding!

Thanks for sharing these photos. All beautiful but I just love that last coral hued lily.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for looking and commenting. Kathleen, I have six water lilies in my little pond/fountain. All but one are miniatures, but it is getting a bit crowded in there. :)

I think one of the pics is 'Dauben' as it's one I planted in there, but I'm not 100% sure that it's in one of the pics. I also planted 'Patricia' as well, another tropical mini, so that could be one of the pics. I haven't really found a good way to keep them nicely labeled that doesn't look tacky, so I'm not keeping very good track of who is who (I know...I know...guilt guilt guilt).

Yes, I am looking for a location for a larger one...there's plenty of room on the northeast part of the back garden, so I may sneak a new, larger pond in this winter. It's pretty darn tempting. I'm amazed at how easy it is to maintain, and how well it does when I head out of town for a few days.

those buds are absolutely beautiful! i wait in anticipation, as i'm starting a warter garden this weekend.
