Well it is a triploid hybrid wichuriana... only seldom sets seed (so it doesn't really need dead-heading). Slightly above average as far as disease resistance (but not my definition of excellent here in TN). Will get about 3' x 3'. It's more of a shrub than an upright form so it may get slightly too wide for a container- but I guess some judicious trimming could take care of that, though :) All in all, I have it in a tough spot that would kill most other "normal" roses and it has survived. IOW it's about on par with the hybrid musks and other species hybrids.

Interesting topic! Well I agree that Exotica is a superb bulb and one of the best!! I too have crossed it with papilio (like Kristi) as well as Mocca and I have strong vigorous seedlings. Just about anything you cross it with takes and it makes huge seedpods! I bought another this season as I noticed that not as many sites offer it these days.. (ETGBs) As for Elvas I have nothing but trouble with him!! He grows lovely leaves on two healthy bulbs and just as Salpal says, mine usually abort or reward me with very disappointing flowers. I acquired my first bulb as a mislabel and the flowers were just outstanding and I was in seventh heaven! Bought another and since then the flowers have been very disappointing but the bulbs themselves continues to carry on. Each year I threaten to get rid of them when I get another homely blooming and then I can't do that to such a healthy bulb! I just love my papilios and a few years back I lost a whole pot to the NFB so they do enjoy eating papilios! I think you've just been lucky! I am growing about 16 seedlings of my first cross of papilio x Exotic Star and one bloomed last Nov and I have one other that is large enough to bloom. Why the others are so much smaller is a mystery, same location and several community pots all with the same treatment. It just must be in the genes I find certain bulbs turn into work horses and others remain primadonnas.. I have two Party Poopers both healthy one is small even though it grows leaves and has bloomed twice in the past. The other is 3 times as large with 3 times the leaves and they are sitting side by side! I found a Chico from last year well rooted sending up a scape. I think I might try some aulicum pollen on Chico I wonder if anyone has tried this cross?? Donna

Mine are all up and growing... and most have buds too. Some look kind of small (the buds) and from experience I know some of these may abort before blooming. But at least a couple have really big flower buds. Most of them are still in pots... I havn't gotten the area I want to plant them in ready yet. I have big plans. They might even have to stay in pots till next year. I want to work on fences this year, which will likely take up most of my garden funds. I don't expect any of them to bloom till mid May, but I hope I get surprised. Some of the singles are supposed to be "early", but I've never had them so I don't know what to expect yet. When they start blooming I will try to catch them with the camera. I'm quite excited about it... especially since most of my new roses are too small to really bloom this year, so these are going to be my "instant" gratification this year.

Dear Kristi, For many years, I was able to access a detailed database via the De Koninklijke Algemeene Vereeniging voor Bloembollencultuur (KAVB) site, which listed information about each registered Hippeastrum cultivar. After reading your most interesting post, my helmdraden (i.e., filaments) are twitching! ☺ I am wondering if KAVB has altered/augmented/updated some of the information contained in its Registry, or if perhaps, there is a difference between the information contained in the official KAVB Registry and their database. In 2012, I was researching Hippeastrum cultivars whose descriptions in the KAVB database included the color purple . As the descriptions of both ‘La Paz’ and ‘Tango’ fell into this category, I saved their detailed information, which is shown directly below this message. Please Note: At that time, the salient differences between the registered cultivars were as follows: The Primary Color of ‘La Paz’ was listed as Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) 185A, and it was further described as eenkleurig / egaal (monochromatic/having only one color). In contrast, the Primary Color of ‘Tango’ is RHS 187B, and it was specified as tweekleurig (bicolored/two-tone). Thank you very much for your efforts! I hope that you will receive additional information, and an ID. Meanwhile, I continue to be curious, mystified, bemused, and amused.
