What's on your list and who are you buying from!?!

This is the preemptive posting, to be followed in November (no doubt....) by the "What I ordered and what I got (mislabels) and from whom". I hope this year's list of mislabeled bulbs is much shorter than last year's! Many distributors that I spoke with had "bad" years. I never did get a Rembrandt van Rijn!! Three tries, three different distributors....3 different bulbs...none of which were RvR!

ENABLER! I'm waiting on Maguires order, will do the usual, I'm not gonna buy a bunch of bulbs at big box stores this year and then I will and of course they will be mislabeled but I don't care. I'll run around trying to find pots for everything then end up planting most of them in the garden and forgetting which is which.

I've already got my order placed for the Yahoo co-op for Neon Rose, Moonlight, Full House, Cinderella, and a few others...

From Royal Colors, I'm definitely ordering their new one this season, Double Dream, and possibly Splash.

From VanEngelen, I'm ordering Magic Green and Evergreen.

So besides RVR, Kristi, what is on your wish list?

It's like somebody just flipped a switch in S.E. Ohio, and we went from the Dog Days of summer to autumn in the course of three days. I'm like Janis...........this summer was perfect. Long, hot days and I wallowed in it. Everyone I have talked to here are rejoicing at the blanket-covered nights and chilly mornings but I'm not impressed. ;-) I am still drowning in the season's tomato crop, as the fall apple crop is coming on. There are plenty left on the vine to harvest, and they're going out of here in brown paper pokes to anyone whom I can pawn them off on. I alternate what I can each day so that I can keep up with both of them at the same time. The pantry shelves are full and I've started stacking the jars in the kitchen in big plastic tulip crates, two dozen quart jars a crate. The big courtland apple tree I finished picking all I can reach with the pole picker this evening and there is a big bowl of baseball-sized apples on the kitchen counter and half a bushel of them outside the kitchen door. This makes two down and four to go. The Jonathans, Winesaps and Granny Smiths need picked and the McIntosh aren't far behind. Does are bringing their half-grown fawns daily to police up the drops and that's a win/win situation to keep the yellow jackets down. It's been raining butterflies for a month now of all shapes and sizes, but the early species are already gone and their caterpillars are everywhere. A few hummers are at the flowers feeding yet. The night sky has been particularly sharp as it does on cool evenings and we've had some foggy mornings in the dells. The lightening buds just up and disappeared as well as the songs of the tree frogs, but the crickets have taken over the chorus. The little volunteer sugar maple near our back door has brilliant red leaves interspersed against the green, and the dogwood trees are getting purple, as is the celery in the garden. The buckeye trees are yellow and the black locust are shedding already. I had a pumpkin failure this year all but one little fellow who is now bright orange, and the peppers are turning red. We have had no appreciable rain now for at least a month, and at least fall promises the beginning of precipitation. We are never in a hurry to clean our flower beds, as autumn usually brings a second wind to the flowers, but this year they are ratty looking from dryness and we may start dumping the urns and baskets soon. It's soup weather and baking smells fill my kitchen daily and we seem to be attending to repair work outside early. One chimney is getting tuck-pointed and the arborists are here off and on to do tree work. Alls we need now is the smell of wood smoke in the air and the "I's" will be dotted and the "T's" will be crossed.

I'm really getting in the mood to do the deed on Rosette Delizy, Carnation, Mrs Dudley Cross, Mme Caroline Testout, Cramoisi Superieur, Jean Bach Sisley, Rose Nabonnand and Lamarque. Sadly, RD was one of the first glamour shots I fell for, but very small plain pale yellow flowers and a very wide V-shape that takes up a lot of real estate are not what I expected. She's a big healthy bush though. Waaah! Carnation - just plain scraggly without a lot of bloom or leaves even with daily water & better feeding. Though I have loved the flowers, haven't seen many this year. MDC - much ado about nothing, blah. Maybe I'll add another SdlM in her spot right next to another one. Hmmm, side by side SdlM's. Sounds yummy. MCT - a lethal thorn tree from bottom to top (they're about half an inch long and half an inch apart all around the cane!!!), few flowers and fewer leaves - and blackspot...in MY garden. CS - what's with this China that it doesn't want to keep leaves and grow canes??? JBS - a good rose for Florida, but he's grown into a wide, airy (not real leafy) bush with unimpressive (to me because they're pretty much semi-double) flowers that fade quickly. I'm not real sure how much 'reducing' he will accept or if that will produce more leaves anyway. He's right at my front door and not real impressive. Don't know what would go in his plan so... RN - young but flowers are unimpressive. Maybe a Gruss an Aachen will move there out of its pot. Lamarque - maybe a move will fix him. I thought he was a massive climber not a 4' tall clump of thin canes, short of leaves and flowers. Possibly, he gets too much shade - not all day. Maybe he could go where MCT is, but if he gets massive in that spot, I'm cooked. I'm looking with a wary eye at Jeri Jennings, but she's such a charmer and I'm so desperate for anything not pink. I think she's probably on her 4th chance to improve. She may not be happy here though. I'll probably stick with her though. Gee, dare I add another one? Sally Holmes. She makes pretty clusters but not many so far. She doesn't act like she wants to grow. Sounds like a wholesale slaughter, doesn't it? But it would leave 90. Sherry

Yes, I did look at the link. It is a compilation of all the information from the several different states. That does not mean that everything listed is a concern in each of the individual states. I checked the USFS page for MN as well as various other sites regarding MN invasives. Clematis terniflora is not listed on any of those sites. Perhaps it will become a future problem but at the moment I have not found it is listed as a future problem here. I did invasiveness research on this plant 15 years ago when I first planted it and have again as have lost 3 plants over the years and rechecked the info before replanting. I agree with your comment that anecdotal experience can be misleading and that invasives are often carried by the wind or other means so that the original site owner is unaware of the invasiveness. true-blue, Sweet Autumn is a vigorous vine. I don't know if it will grow under the eaves but believe it is listed as growing 20ft or more. Here is a link that might be useful: USFS Invasive Plants MN

pkponder Maybe mine are too deep in the water. The rhizomes are about 4-6 inches below the surface. It's mainly just the tips, about 2 inches, of the leaves that turn brown, like all of them. It's on a cinderblock already, but maybe I need to put something else under it to raise it up a bit more. Can't hurt to try. One more question, whats a good media to use for repoting pond plants? I know both of mine came with the "sludge" type stuff in the pots but I don't recall seeing that type for sale anywhere. Any places around Ft. Worth that sell it? Or just the technical name of it so I can google around. Or maybe there's something better to use? Thanks again, Phil

I'm with ya Ryan, Double Dream sounds great. Can't beat the prices on for the Yahoo coop of course since I don't already have Cherry Nymph. And I might need some more cybisters. Now that I think I can make them bloom again, especially. This is the time of year with all the possibilities open. Decisions, decisions.

Yahoo Co-op?!?!? Now who is the enabler!!?? Just came back from Sams. They have a nice big "little" fridge for beer...I mean bulbs! Just $89!! So...need to see about that.

For those who got the CDs (and there are 2 sitting here with names to be mailed) the cards have the growers' names.

White Flower Farm should have several of these. I think the new Royal Color offerings should be on line by the end of this week or maybe Saturday.

I hope I can get a RvR and a Tosca this season! Tosca sold out...so I hope they get some nice fat bulbs...a special one with MY NAME on it!

Oh yes, do get Tosca Kristi! That one was just gorgeous. I highly recommend it. The others you mention are new to me. I'll have to go look them up.

I am reluctant to order anything,since I have been getting bulbs long off patent,or bulbs no one can identify,when the expensive,named, patented ones were ordered. Two years in a row is not a fluke. I may wait until after others have bloomed their fall purchases,to see if I will even bother.
I've never had trouble with the U.S. sellers of bulbs,when they were grown here. The problem is,most of them only sell species bulbs. I do get what I ordered though.

ok, knock it off! All of you!
After I ordered with Ryan for Maguires, I swore that was it for a long time!
Now you've made me go to 2 or 3 of the bulb websites, and dang near order more!! I stopped myself both times just before I typed in the information.

And I just barely have enough pots to put the Maguires ones in when they arrive . . . . you see???? you are hurting me! stop it!! Besides, it's too late to find cheap pots.

Thank God we're not talking about wine!!!

I wanted to ask you for sometime already.
I saw your pictures from Holland's show, and Summertime there looked similar to Maguire's Summertime (it wasn't close-up, though). Are they the same? If they are, do you know who originally bred this variety?
Will Lilac Favorite be available from Royal Colors too? I didn't hear about this variety.
I definitely want to get Tosca too. I already got Evergreen, but it won't flower this year.

Ya'll are terrible LOL! My order is placed for the co-op, got word from Ryan that the boxes have been shipped and now I'm trying to talk myself out of ordering from RC and VE.
I gotta go buy pots! And planting media! OMG! BEFORE my box gets here!!

Alana, I love your photo.....well composed!!

I am intrigued by this co-op group.....as usual with any Yahoo group there is zippo info on the page that describes how it actually works.....none I could find anyway.....I can be clueless though so maybe that explains it :o) can anyone tell us more about how it works? Are these rather standard plants or do they import from South Africa, South America and other more unique places to get plants that can not be had without a lot of work? For example, another Paramongaia or a Pamianthe from Peru would be awesome.....are these truly rare sorts of things on the list? They talk about Hosta and garden plants which are not what I would be interested in......any info from those of you who belong would be appreciated......although the silly 1 month without buying this is a real turn-off for me. Thanks for any input you guys can provide!!

I did just get in some more Boophane, Ammocharis, Haemanthus and Brunsvigia from South Africa....so I guess that is my fall order a tad early :o) Dan

Hey Dan, the coop buys from the usual vendors, not much in the rare dept with the amaryllis. You know the drill, buy more, save more. I do believe they are going to order from Van Englen later this year also. I don't think they are too fierce on the a month buying, I actually thought it was 3 months. Most of them are further north then I am so I've no interest as hoyas, plumonarias, etc. won't live for me.

Sounds like you have a great order from SA coming, vendor or are you importing again?

Hi Beachplant.....this was an import.....sort of a messed-up one to be totally honest, but in the end most of the stuff came in OK......still a few that did not make it in another box.....the hazards of importing on ocassion!! I just love Ammocharis and Boophane as some of you know and those looked nice so potted up a few right away, distributed some and am still getting rid of a few more. The only hassle is that they will of course want to grow in to our fall and winter, but guess that is what I get :o) Dan

OK, OK! SO far, only have an order in for RC's new ones and favorites.

Brazza, Flamenco Queen, Sweet Nymph,Sunny Prince,Cybister Rose, Naranja,Neon. May order Neon Rose in quantity from wholesaler if I can find it. One was definitely not enough last year! AM hoping to meet up with my new Aussie bulbs any day now... and definitely do not need any quantity of new bulbs, only enough new ones to make sure bases are covered for my flower business in winter.

Dan, thanks for the compliment on my picture. I really loved the way Tosca looked in that pot on the table (since I had run out of room in the dining room and that was an overflow) so had to take a picture of it there. Totally by accident. The Yahoo coop is mostly perennials and they do bulbs from a broker in the fall. Usual stuff but prices are really good.

Noni, speaking of which, Yahoo coop has Neon again. Ryan and I got it last year and loved it - and we agree, we need more this year.
