Hello everyone,

I have some very good news to share with you.

Mr. Paul Romijin of Royal Colors reports that he has ordered/reserved "Thai Thai" the Pink Sonatini that many of us have been longing to grow for a long time.

However, do not get overly excited just yet. He will only know if he gets the bulbs once they are harvested in SA. In September, he will know whether or not he is able to offer them on the website.

The Double Picotee Sonata "Harlequin" and the White and Red Striped Sonatini "Bright Spark" are definitely being added to the Royal Colors fall catalog.

Most, if not all, of Hadeco's lovely bulbs can be viewed right on their website... I love going there and drooling over the blooms!

I'm glad to hear that Royal Colors is expanding their offerings! Especially with the bulbs mentioned! I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

I've got new seedlings of both Thai socos and arabicums...I can see a difference between the two types already even though they're barely a week old now....even the three types of Thai soco look different from each other.....I have to take some new photos to post so you can see. As for a reliable seed source....I got my Thai socos from adeniumseeds.com I got the 20 seeds for $35 and he actually sent me 8 of each of S1/Golden Bell, Khao Hin Zon, and Petch Ban Na. I sowed them all the evening of May 28 (the day I received them) and so far I have 100% germination of the S1 and KHZ and 6 of 8 of the PBN. Also got 20 seeds of A. arabicum "Black Giant" (he sent 22) and I got 100% germination of them. And....I got 20 seeds (he sent 22 again) of A. arabicum Yemen--21 have germinated now and one turned moldy and I quickly yanked it. Lastly, I ordered 2 packets of 20 seeds (22 in each packet) of mixed Saudi arabicum seeds...difficult to tell how many have come up as I have them in several different containers at the moment--they seem to be the slowest of the whole batch but I count 24 germinated so far with some more poking up today. The "Black Giant" seedlings are the biggest of them all and a couple of them are already showing their second set of leaves. As for Ebay...I think kingadenium is most likely a good source, probably adeniumcenter as well.....you can find Thai socos usually 10 seeds for $10.99 plus $4 shipping. I haven't ordered from either of these sources yet so I can't vouch for them 100%....but I've had some communications with kingadenium and have some of his Thai soco seeds that i'm watching--gotta wait for payday Friday to pull any triggers though!

Hi Cole Robbie thanks for asking I have attached some information and photos I downloaded on these tomato's they are growing extremely well and are starting to fruit, they are very hardy and resistant to cracking, and water damage. They are an heirloom variety that I bought on ebay along with some Arkansas tomato's that are going well in my ebb and flow but are not flowering yet. These little beauties are roaring along without any attention.

Howdy! I did a year at U.C. Davis....the pollen and the humidity were intense ;-) The farmer's market should have a nice selection of plants. During the Summer, the temps range between 85F and 95F for the most part here, but we always have a couple weeks of 100F+ weather....those weeks are awful. I'm at 1600 feet elevation, so I don't quite get the higher elevation cooling effect. You guessed it - containers are moved into shade (mosaic sun) during the hot spells. I find that peppers don't really need full, unobstructed sun - just a few hours direct. I don't actually use any peat moss in my mixes - I use pumice and turface, which maintain structure far better. I'd rather water more often than have collapsing soil in the root-zone. I agree that it's great to have some "local" growers, so that we can compare notes and increase the knowledge base for others in our dry climate. Josh

Marianne, you compelled me to go and taste one. LOL Thanks, my mouth is on fire. But keep in mind you've asked about flavor to someone who critiques food and literally wrote a book about food. You might want to sit down. LOL The heat is manageable--for me. My ideal snack is Serrano peppers dipped into Korean pepper padre, so bearing that in mind -- this is slightly hotter than your average Serrano. That said, I've tried some Serrano that will make a grown man cry, so they vary -- but going by the average Serrano heat, this gives you a stronger shot on the tongue and a longer lasting heat. While I am sure the one I picked off, which was an older one hanging from where each branch Ys, it still wasn't quite ready, I'd say. Still very very green. Most enticing is the fruity spray of bright but spicy flavor from the skin that keeps giving as you chew. It beats the fruitiness one can expect from some Habanero peppers, especially because it lacks the bitter, smoky punch that some Habs can have (though when used correctly, the smokiness is good, too). This is just citrusy and fruity....which just happens to burn your tongue and the roof of your mouth, haha. That flavor makes it a better pepper for salsas and other fresh dishes that need or benefit from heat garnishes or marinades (like fish...or vegetables); I'd have to be careful when cooking with this so that it doesn't impart fruity heat to savory dishes. It's vibrant! What does not happen is the burn in the back of the mouth. The heat is really concentrated on the tongue and the burn stays there, too. But--this could be because I quickly swallowed it after I realized it is quite spicy LOL. I can totally feel it in my stomach right now, though! That's good because while the skin is juicy, the inside is quite seedy for how thin and narrow it is. I'd say there's about 18 seeds in there. If later on when I actually start harvesting these, the flavor changes, ill let you know. But for now, between that sample and the really, REALLY gorgeous plant, I am impressed with this variety. It is, hands down, the fastest and most prolific out of any that I have grown. I think this one will be quite large by the end of the season. Perhaps I'll try overwintering it. :) That said, the weather has been hot until this past weekend and this particular pepper was in a 3 gallon before, which I moved up to a 10 gallon just a couple of weeks ago. So during much of its ripening time, it really used up all of the water in the pot quickly (hence my repotting it again so late) and was dry by day's end. That may have contributed to the heat. The seed itself was planted end of April or maybe the beginning of May--really late. Hope that helps! :) Grace

Blanca - Just right click on the picture you want and click on "save picture as ...", then just save it to your hard drive. Then upload it as you normally would (perform whatever magic as you see fit). Here's the one I'm lusting after, although quite sure I have it somewhere in those bulbs that rotted and are coming back. Going to order this one again anyhow. So glad to see it there. Thanks for the good news!

Thanks Soultan! That's not a bad price either. I just absolutely love that one. I'm going to get it, and if the other one ever gets back around to blooming, I'll just combine them into one pot. I'm so happy!!!!!

John Scheepers not only has good pricing, they also send nice, healthy bulbs, and their packaging is second to none! I highly recommend them! I ordered Amalfi from them last fall, and was more than pleased with the bulb they sent. The Tulip and Lily bulbs they sent were wonderful, as well!

I find it hard to make choices where hippeastrum bulbs are concerned! They are all so lovely...

I'm going to have to do some serious down-sizing to make room for anything more in my little greenhouse this fall. There are several I have my eye on, besides Snow White. Almost every single day I'm still looking at them even though they're only growing leaves now. Is that a bit sick, or what? Actually, part of it is the fact that I have about 50 bulbs that I don't know what they are, because they're the ones that are coming back from the year 2000 rot. I look at them and wonder what they are, and if they're growing something absolutely beautiful to surprise me with. This was the case with Rozetta, Unique, Carina, and the Lady Janes that all bloomed this year for the first time in seven years.

Then you have quite a few more surprises in store for yourself, Kitty! I went way overboard last fall purchasing bulbs... I have well over fifty varieties, and they are all tagged, but that doesn't leave much room for anything on my wish list!

I began last fall with one orchid cutting... now, I have four orchids... as well as the jungle full of hippeastrum bulbs! How can I keep fifty-plus pots in a small window alcove?!
