Seed Propagation Success

6 weeks ago I obtained 13 bamboo seeds from an Ebay seller. I planted the seeds in a small clay pot with Miracle Grow-laced seed starting soil. One week ago the first bamboo arose from the soil. There are now five bamboo seedlings growing quite rapidly. The tallest seedling is now 2 inches in height and has a healthy looking stem and leaf. Today, one more poked through the surfacem making for the total of five.

The bamboo I planted is a running bamboo, specifically a "water bamboo". I am concerned about the rhizomes intermingling and damaging each other. At what point should I transplant the seedlings into a larger pot? This one is rather small. Should I go ahead and separate the seedlings into their own pots?

I am new at bamboo seed planting, in fact I am new to bamboo care period.

Any assistance would be great! Thanks.

I have running bamboo its a great plant if you have the space for it.mine is two years old and in the ground, it spreads. I would try to find a place in the ground for it before it get to cold. your sounds like its still real small,so you may want to winter it in inside. try putting one in the ground I bet it will take off.

I'll probably winter the healthiest three of them...and the other two I will plant in the ground and hope for the best. Do you think they would survive the winter? NC generally has mild winters...but we do have some real cold snaps. I will wait until they develop a second leaf before putting them in the ground.

This is easy to propagate with stem cuttings. Just make sure that the stem has not become "woody." Take a cutting that has 3-5 leaves remaining at the top and 2 or 3 nodes. Dip the node parts in rooting hormone. Poke a hole into your pot full of a 3-1 mixture of pre-moistened (but not soggy) peat and vermiculite with a pencil. Place the stem cutting in making sure the leaves are not touching the soil line and gently tamp the soil around it. Take a soda bottle with the bottom cut out and place it directly onto the soil in the pot. I like to use soda bottles because you can use the cap as a thermostat to adjust how much moisture the plant gets - but as long as the plastic bottle looks condensated you know you're in business. After a few weeks it should root - you'll know it has when it begins to show signs of new growth, either leaves or stem. :)

I don't know about vinegar as it's strong enough to kill top growth of plants. I wouldn't have any idea what concentration to use. They do use hydrogen peroxide in some houseplant fertilizers. Perhaps that might be a better choice? Oxygen Plus is the brand. You might research it to see what percent solution to make. I have known people who have frequently rooted roses in a glass or vase of water. My grandmother and great grandmothers did it in Alabama and an aunt used to do it outside Pittsburgh, PA. I can root soft wood things like Coleus and harder ones like Althea (Rose of Sharon) in water here, but not roses. They just burn out and die. The aridity and heat are enough that I don't try those in water here anymore as it's a waste of time. Along the coast, I've known prunings dropped into nursery cans to root from roses, apple trees and many other shrubs, but when I deliberately tried them, they died. Take a look at the Oxygen Plus or perhaps something like Miracid and see what seems more suitable. The Miracid may be too salty. Just a thought. Kim

Some stem cuttings will leaf out right away. That does not mean they have rooted. What they've done is used stored energy already in the cane to produce growth with. That can sometimes be a problem because they are spending time growing and not spending time rooting. They may still root, of course, but it may take longer. Some canes will not produce any new top growth for a very long time. That does not mean they are not rooting. They are probably so busy rooting that they don't have the energy to produce top growth yet. Once they feel they have produced enough roots to support top growth they will take off! Every rose has it's own growth habit and that includes how they root. Some roses are notoriously hard to root and others all you have to do is lay them on the top of the soil and they'll root right away. It's just a matter of patience on our part to let them do their own thing. You can snip off the black tips if you want. It shouldn't hurt anything. To dry them out, get them out of those plastic bags. Let the water evaporate from the soil for a while. I don't do cuttings inside ever and I never cover mine. I do mine in the spring and they go outside, in full sun, with the rest of the roses. I do keep very good watch on them to make sure they do not ever dry out completely but you can over water them too so you have to have a good balance. If your soil seems soggy let them dry for a bit. I don't do the burrito/callus method so I'm not that familiar with it. If you do a search on here for Roseseek's burrito method I think you'll find all the information you need. He's the best! The hardest part about doing any kind of cuttings is PATIENCE!! I know you're excited and anxious but every time you disturb them you set them back a little. Just leave them alone and wait and in the end they'll give you the roses you want!

Update:

Another shoot sprang up two nights ago. They are all still in the pot, as I didn't want to disturb the stems before they were strong enough to be transplanted. It shouldn't be a problem. They are so strong looking that I'm tempted to transplant them all into the ground because they are growing so rapidly. I am impressed by the fact they popped up in the first place being I got them off of Ebay, and secondly because they are so strong looking. Starting to look like I have a winner.

Hi, I have started a couple hundred water bamboo seeds in dixie cups. about 5 seeds in each cup, been doing this since early spring. My oldest seedlings are over a foot high. If you pot is bigger than a dixie cup, my advice is let them get at least 4 inches tall then put each in a 1 gallon pot.The rizhomes won't be big enough to be tangled. It's true that once in the ground they do grow faster, but seedlings that young I would leave in the pots outdoors for this winter, Only bring in during cold spells. Dry indoor heat is hard on water bamboo. keep them well watered, easy on the fertalizer. Then put them in the ground come spring. You can put about an inch of grass clipping as mulch on your pots, bamboo love grass clippings. And they like full sun.
