Datura seed pods?

I bought a datura w/ a growing pod on it. I left it alone, and today it was broke open, seeds all over the place. It was still green. Do they open when they are still green? Or did something break it open?

(I'm asking you guys cause you know so much ;D )

I've grown datura for many years and have never noticed a green pod open on its own. All the ones I've seen are brown (including the stem) before they crack open. Also, green seeds, in general, tend to stick together. Strange.

the seeds are brown, and they fell out, there were a few left inside, i shook it a little and they fell. I wonder if they'll be viable? It did have the seed pot when I planted it, maybe the shock to get settled in did something?

Hi Janna, I see you still need to get your email link set up, especially since you didn't check the box to get the follow-up replies emailed to you. Those plants get absolutely huge. Here is mine from 2008 and it was about 8' wide and grew wider and taller later in the season before it really got out of bounds and I had to cut it back. Mine is in a microclimate and the main plant comes back each year, along with lots of seedlings.

DionKar, I've grown the Ballerina Purples, from my saved seeds, for the last three years. Sometimes the seed pods turn brown before splitting open and sometimes they split open while still entirely green. I don't know why that is, but in both cases the outer part of the pods are always "soft mushy" and the ripe seeds are a light brown color. If you open one of the seed pods before it splits on it's own, the seeds will be white. Also, when I say they 'sometimes turn brown', I don't mean 100% brown. I guess I should say that the green pods are in the process of turning brown. I've never seen one that was completely brown. Hope this helps, Art

Greenpassion, That is normal for them. When they open I remove from the mother plant, open the pod and collect the seeds, allow them to dry then store for next years crop. There are in excess of 50-100 seeds in each pod. If you wait for the pod to open on it's own you may loose seeds to mould. pa

I'm having the same thing happening. My datura metel purples have had many ripe pods but my whites are still unripe. They are huge but no sign of splitting yet. If they don't ripen by our frost date I'm going to cut them off and store them in a paper bag. I don't know what else to do. Karyn

They are fine. My garden dats will form a pod and split when the pod is green. I figure, if ma nature is letting them loose then they are ok.

I think it is a different story for the weedy ones, but consistent for the garden variety. The purple jimson weed ones do go brown on the pods first.
