Dan, what does that mean? Are you saying too much light and too much fertilizer? or too little light and too little fertilizer? or what?

My first guess would be a root rot or a fungal problem.

Perennialfan, I'm a little confused about the statement that the grow lights are turned off during the day. Did you have the grow lights on continuously prior to the problem showing up? Are the seedlings in a window so that they are getting sunlight during the day? Were the grow lights being used only to supplement natural light?

in my experience.. rots and fungi indicate too much water as dan noted ...

or improper media ... and improper drainage ...

or too cold ....

when i grew under lights ... 24 hours per day [min 16 on 8 off] .. within inches of the plants ..... the heat generated also helps burn off excess water .. sometimes ...

when the plants are wet and dark and cold .... things start rotting .... and when things start rotting [even the media] fungi show up ...

as you can see.. the variables involved in growing things indoors.. are very tricky ... throw in forced air heat also ... which means lack of ambient humidity ....

Alright, I guess I should have clarified this. I started the seedling in a greenhouse. They stayed there for about 2 or 3 months, and were only re-potted once when they outgrew their original seed starting flat. About 2 weeks ago, I took them home, because no one is at the greenhouse during Christmas break to care for them. I started to turn the grow light on, and leave it on for about 8-10 hours. As more time went on, the leaves began to wilt. I feared that the light may be the culprit of this, so I stopped turning it on. I moved them directly in front of my window, so they could get more natural light. They were pretty close to the light already, but now they are directly in front of it.

I do suspect that drainage may be an issue (even though I haven't watered them at all since they've been brought home), so I have spoken with Tapla regarding moving them to the gritty mix. I plan on doing that today when I pick up the ingredients. Do you think this will help??

how cold was it 2 weeks ago when you moved them..

how did you protect them during the move ...

the gritty mix will be far superior....but the shock to the young seedlings might be too much at this point.

I understand that concern (transplant shock), but I've moved lots of seedlings of many types of plants just after their first true leaves developed without a problem. My experience has been that, as long as you are very careful to disturb the root system as little as possible, early transplant isn't often a huge problem. I've even had transplants surpass the control group (non-transplanted seedlings) in the same medium (not really sure why). Since the plants have already been transplanted once, I wouldn't be very concerned about having to do it again to get them into a better medium.

I think the real issue in this case is going to boil down to why the plants have started dieing back. If drainage is a problem, then transplanting the seedlings may be the best solution and lead to a resolution. If the tops of the plants were damaged by low temperatures when the plants were moved (as Ken suggested), the seedlings might be better off left in place for a while. If there are multiple plants, it might not be a bad idea to try different things and see what works.

you should wait to see if they recover from whatever happened to them ....

my LIMITED experience with seedlings tells me that if you lose the true leaves/bud ... above the seed pod leaves [real term of art there] .... that they are terminal .... no bud left to develop ....

whether the bud was killed.. or just leaf damage.. remains to be seen ....

i would NOT transplant a plant in such shock.. it just might put them over the top ....

now.. if you have many ... and some look just fine .... then it might not hurt to transplant a few ... no one says they all have to be done at the same time .... experiment, if you will ....

I've transplanted many seedlings, as well.
The problem here is that the seedlings don't seem to be exceptionally healthy or able to handle the transition. Of course, if the current soil conditions are preventing development, then something must be done, either way.
