Too late to start seeds?

I want to kill my cat! I started 4 different types of seeds this spring (my first time growing from seed). I was so happy when all four had seedlings. My stupid cat managed to wipe out 15 of them (about 1/3).

Since I'm not real familiar with growing bamboo from seed I am wondering if they can be started year round? It may be too hot here right now (over 100 for highs) so that may affect germination too...not sure. Thanks for any info. Amy

Since bamboo flower and give seed only rarely, they don't follow all the normal seed rules. They lose viability very quickly, so it's best to have fresh seed and plant them promptly. I have planted bamboo seeds at different times of the year -- whenever I can get my hands on some --and it doesn't seem to be a problem. Sometimes it's good to put them in the refrigerator for a couple of weeks because it's claimed that the artificial seasonal change from cold to warm causes better germination. As for the heat, just keep them out of direct light, and moist. I use bottom heat to germinate them because I live in a more temperate Zone than you do.

Hi Calliope, I know what you mean, but those plants that can be planted before frost date usually can take frost easily. My nasturtiums, e.g. went through a few snow falls last year with their beautiful leaves and flowers before they finally yielded. I agree that one must know his area well and know how to estimate (though we cannot be 100% accurate). For some annuals, I wait 2 weeks after our formal frost dates, then check the forecast for the next 10 days, and if it looks good I can plant them. For tender annuals, I might wait a little longer or start indoor. For half-hardy or hardy annuals, I can start earlier.

Peppers require 8-12 weeks before transplanting. Far too late for them. Squash and chard work much better if just direct seeded anyway so just direct seed them. There is no reason to pre-start either of them in a greenhouse. Dave

Melons and okra I always start in the garden, usually late this month or early June. Tomatoes I've had sprout up on their own at around the same time and produce fruit in late summer to early autumn. Peppers are the only thing that I wonder if it might be too late for on your list, and even then it might depend on what type. I'd still start the tomatoes inside now just so they have warm nights as well as days. And when ai said melons, I mean cantaloupe types, I don't know about watermelons. Cheers!

Not at all. I usually start some each month from April-July. That way I have a continuous source of great, healthy tomatoes until frost (or even after that, since I plant to harvest green tomatoes that will ripen for Christmas!)
