Stumbled across a Mislabeled Erskine's Prairie Peace ?
Comments (9)Hi folks, Glad you enjoyed the photographs. Hopefully I was able to transfer my excitement at seeing for the first time a rose I had heard of, but never seen the blooms in real life. They are definitely more than I hoped for when I saw their color, but again as some have cautioned it is one moment in time and a particular spring for temps rain etc so color change is no doubt possible. But gads a new bloom colored apricot - peach rose totally hardy, going 6 to 8 feet and cloaked well in blooms in zone 2 and 3 ... me, I have died and gone to heaven. My ones in the garden are surprizing me as Leo suggested they would. I had a crooked eye when I received them because of my limited experience with suckers, but they are flourishing after about 4 weeks in the ground, along with Suzanne, Butterball and Haida (sp?). The beautiful and graceful pink did not have a label that I could find but it had the genes to me of a pimpinefolia due to the leaves and form. However I now believe it to be too double to be "double blush burnet" as mine is definitely not that double and is 5 or 6 years old. There was also a near pure white semi-double "pimpinefolia" just beginning to bloom with no tag that I need to go back and check when the college is in business hours ... got to find the curator and get a map. I know 4 or 5 years ago I received, or saw a map, of the gardens in some periodical where they were advertizing an open house and rose sale. I have to dig more as a fast pick of google did not find it. By the way I finally got the first official blooms in my garden today of "previous years plants". First was Cornhill's Mary of Scots" that is not totally cane hardy for me(lose half the length of the new canes) and Theresa Bugnet - every year I appreciate the latter rose more and more. For some reason primula is very slow this year but as usual excellent cane survival - nada damage except maybe an inch on the tips of 5 foot canes - in a year that smacked the mordens and explorers - don't get me wrong I like those roses but there more 4 to 5 zone ones to me. My further excitement is the - not hardy - Geschwind's Orden had enough canes left and it will give a nice bloom this year along with De la Grifferaie. Both after only the first winter....See MoreSome Hippi, some OT and offer
Comments (29)Dear Elizabeth, I am so sorry that you carry so much pain inside. I think I know how bad it is...only because the death of both parents still causes much pain. We ache for them and the "hole" that they leave. Lucky you to be so close to your brother. I will never know the closeness of a sibling as he and I were the only 2 children. He was my parent's biological child and they adopted me from birth. Sometimes I think he didn't like me...and he was the only family member to ever treat me differently or said anything about me not "really" being family. This was especially obvious when my dad died and made me the executor of the estate (younger child...and in my brother's opinion "not blood"), so maybe that's why he cut me out of his life. I could try to guess for years, but am trying to close the book on a chapter that was particularly painful. I beat myself up for years, and now that he's gone, I have to let the pain and the "shoulda, coulda, woulds" go. I don't claim this to be a universal approach, but I can get on with my life not worrying about him and I am glad that he's not in need of anything. He wouldn't take any help I offered unless it involved a "dead president" (I heard someone refer to money as that and thought it was clever). So...the weight is off my shoulders. I am still sad and will be everytime I think of him...but I can't let it drag me down. MY HIPPIS NEED ME to be happy!! THE DATE was nice (ok, it's 9PM and I'm home....) this was dinner with Ed. I met him on a cruise in 1997 (they thought we were a married couple!!) and we have dinner every year. He lives in IL and I usually catch up with him on the way to a dog show. He happened to drive his new car down towards Houston and invited me to a very nice Italian resturant. New car??? His old Miata was just fine by me...fun and zippy (I used to have a convertible too), but the new car is fun and zippier. A new Porche boxter! Boys and their toys. Tomorrow is another "date" of sorts. Going to a wine tasting and meeting a friend (Alan) there. Asked him what I should bring and he recommended cheesecake, so I made a Chocolate Kaluha chocolate chip cheesecake with ganauche(?) on top! :-) see what these guys are missing?? Handy in the yard AND kitchen?? Kristi...See MoreThe new H. Johnsonii are blooming and S&H mislabel
Comments (22)Lovely photo! Thanks for sharing! One of the things I love about Hippeastrum blooms is the impact they make! The flowers are so large and the colors so wonderful, that you can forgive the fact that they only bloom once a year, for a short period of time. You're lucky to have a scented Apple Blossom! Not all have scent, and not very many Hippeastrum varieties have a scent. Jewel is one that supposedly has a nice aroma, though I don't have one yet, so I've never smelled it. I would say that only a very few hybrids have a scent at all... among them, Jewel and Apple Blossom... scent is just not top on the priority list when breeding them, I guess. I'm glad you've come out "lurk" mode! Welcome, and do join us often! This is the slow season right now, so posts will be sporadic, but it will pick up considerably once fall rolls around!...See MoreMislabeled Austins at local lowes for $10.99
Comments (63)What are they yellow tagged as? I saw many tagged as Gene Boerner and I dug a bit, but no DA tags. I also saw one yellow tagged (can't remember the name) but it had another white tag reading Waiheke. You can tell the picture doesnt match the rose. I started feelin weird so I left. I would love to run into a Scepter d'Isle, Eglantyne or a JTO, though!...See Moredondeldux z6b South Shore Massachusetts
