Comments (37)Maybe the heat does lighten Munstead Wood a bit, but not by much in my zone6 Kansas garden. Here is the first bloom on the second bloom cycle of my new Munstead Wood. Temps have been around 90. I took this pic this morning. To me, this bloom is a bit lighter than the spring bloom, but not as light and red (with no purples) as the other pics posted above. For ease of comparison, here is the earlier pic I posted of MW during its spring bloom cycle. There do seem to be some darker shades and more purple in this spring bloom, but I don't see a lot of difference--maybe more petals on the spring bloom, but colorwise, they are close. Now the question will be, what color will my MW be when our temps reach and stay at 100+ degrees. You know that is coming--I'm just thankful it hasn't happened yet. Last year at this time, we were already stuck in the 100s! Well, whatever color it is, I still think Munstead Wood is one of the most gorgeous roses I've seen in some time! Actually, I'm nuts about her--with or without her purple highlights! LOL Kate...See MoreFig Orchard - Austin, Texas
Comments (36)Oxankle: Austin is a great place to live. Leander is quite different now than it was in the early '90's and radically different than it was in the 1950's, as is Austin. Yes it's hard to beat fig preserves made with the sun-ripened figs of Central Texas. I have potatoes, tomatoes and pepper coming along in my garden, too! Ceresella: If you want to go the cheapest route, and want a Celeste, Brown Turkey or Kadota, you can probably find them at one of the local nurseries or large chain stores like Home Depot or Lowe's in Austin. Of course, there is a considerable possibility that the cultivar will be mislabeled. If you want a more uncommon variety, are willing to pay more for a smaller tree, and are willing to wait a year or two longer for fruit, then order on line from one of the reputable fig suppliers. Search the threads on this forum in order to find a good on-line vendor....See MoreKordes Roses arriving at Lowe's
Comments (94)Well, I checked our Lowes and HD tonight. Both had tons of 2gal potted roses, but pretty much the same varieties at both places. TROPICANA, CHICAGO PEACE, MON CHERI, OLYMPIAD, ICEBERG, CHRYSLER IMPERIAL, LOVE, MIRANDY, GRANADA, etc. HD did have SUNNY DELIGHT, which I already got last yr. They also had those weird boxed bareroots from Vigoro. Only thing unusual was FRAGRANT MEMORY aka JADIS. I almost bought one, but decided not to. Lowes did have some carpet roses, which I wasn't interested in. It was dark out when we got to both stores, otherwise I might've dug deeper to see if there was anything else that wasn't easily visible. The pallets were just too close together. There was a lavender rose at HD that had no tag. But being so dark, I didn't want to try it. Couldn't see what it really looked like cuz the outdoor lighting was horrible. Waste of time going by both places. Altho, I did pick up some cool new varieties of petunias and calibrachoas at Lowes. Oh well, maybe later toward Mother's day they might get new roses in....See MoreLowe’s has Austin’s again
Comments (89)Zz, you will love it! My LC was a very unusual shade of warm, medium violet with shaded white reverse. It was very fragrant too! I think LC wants more water that it’s gotten, which is probably why it shattered. It’s a very different look than much of what I have, but I’m glad because I’ll use it break up all this sameness. :-)...See MoreCarolina Girl (Zone 8b)
