Hello, once again! I'm sorry to say that the jungle doesn't contain any Hippeastrum blooms at the moment, but other things are happening, all due to the breaking weather! This is just a small assortment of photos... spring flowers, pets, new plants... enjoy!

Jodi Tell me about your Nerine. I got two 'bulbs in a bag' that are just "nerine" with a bright pink picture. Is yours the same? Mine are popping up now after the rains the last 2 days. I am so glad you are seeing the promises of Spring.

I found both the Nerine and Hymenocallis bulbs at Meijer's... they had a spring bulb display, and these were among the choices... the Nerine was just a single bulb in a bag with a photo of the bright pink flower, and the description/name said "Nerine Bowdenii". I've got it potted since it's just a single bulb... I'd have to dig it from the garden in fall, anyway.

Other display choices included things like Glads, Dahlias, Cannas... mostly tender bulbs and rhizomes. I chose the two types above, plus a bag of 25 little Oxalis corms. We also grabbed a few packages of the green and white flowered Glads. Those should be very pretty! The Oxalis will be potted up in groups of 5 in hanging baskets, and at least one of those baskets will be a houseplant! We'll probably sell the others.

I just wish they would have had "garden amaryllis" among the display choices, but Sam's Club is the only place I've seen those... and I don't want an entire package of 14 bulbs, or whatever the box count was.

Can't wait to see what your Nerine looks like! They are probably identical to mine, but you never know! Yours will most likely show a bit different due to the difference in environments.

Neil and I went over to that OTHER house and piddled around today. I cleaned the refrigerator and cooked a whole chicken. Trying to get acquainted with the layout of the kitchen. Tomorrow I'm going to clean up all the plaster dust and sit in the living room and try my best to design some shelves, and a contraption for the BIG screen TV for Neil. I picked up hamburgers and we ate in the sun room. Neil bagged up garbage. He is anxious to get moved in. I want to just get settled, don't much care where. I love Katrina's bathroom. The motion light switch works great. I took some pictures and measured our bathroom. It looks pitiful now and I don't have much of a clue about how I'm going to use the space. I bought some new books on decks and patios, bathrooms, kitchens, gardens. I tried out my new Home Depot card. I got the thing because this sweet little old man was so dear and I thought I would just cut it up when it came. When I signed up I bought 2 battery chargers and several rechargeable batteries and got them all for 5 bucks after the promotional percentage was factored in. I only use my Visa and long ago cut up all other cards. Now, I'll cut up the HD card, pay the bill when it comes and be done with it. Would that I were as handy with tools and building as Michelle. My sister can do anything. She built a beautiful fireplace surround and mantle. I can usually design it but I can't build it. Our furry little weather forecaster, General Lee, saw his shadow, bless his heart. The whole month of February is supposed to be mild, go figure. Talk about screwing up spring, our azaleas and dogwoods won't know when to bloom.

Loretta, I have 4 siam ruby reds, that I left outside thruout the winter. I covered them in February when we had the 2 weeks of freezing weather. I covered them with a sheet and bungie cord, with 4 inches of mulch. All 4 made it thru the freezes. The one that I planted on the South side of the house, did not even freeze back, it is doing great, its about 4ft tall, and has pups. The 2 I planted on the East side, did not freeze back to the ground, but did have to be cut back, they are about 2 ft tall right now, no pups. The one I planted on the North side froze back to the ground, it is slowly coming back. I did not know where to plant them, so I planted them on diffrent sides, the one on the south side, seemed to multiply much faster then the other 3. I have a sprinkler system, so they were watered every other day, even when it froze. This is zone 9b coastal, Rockport Texas. I hope this information helps you. Barbra

Welcome silvergirl. How exciting to watch and wait and see what pops up. My garden is mostly about to burst. Here's what's already blooming: Clematis H.F. Young (fading and falling in the rain - - it was prolific this year) Lupines fernleaf bleeding heart lady's mantle knockout roses (just started popping) wooly thyme hens & chicks (one sprouted a pink flower, prompting DS to disown it) azalea lonicera sempervirens 'manifich' columbine huechera (forgot the variety - - purple & silver) creeping phlox (pink) dianthus about to burst: Peonies styrax japonicus more lupines more knockout roses clematis 'Durandii' I'm going to the Cape this weekend and my dad is staying at the house. I hope it rains so I don't have to count on him to water, but I hope it doesn't rain hard enough to ruin the peony blossoms that are bound to pop while I'm gone.

if you can cover the plants with cloth like blankets or even bed sheets on the frost nights they can last much longer. My experience has been that the first frost hurts some top leaves. the 2nd frost kills the plant. The peppers are like new. But no experience on Habs freezing. Green peppers are perfect for use and eating. You can freeze them, make hot sauce. or store them for later. Green new mexico peppers are usuaully used more than red ones. Remember to save some seeds. Some peppers will ripen red indoors. This time of year they do put on a lot of peppers. they do not like the extreme heat. so the cooling down gets them going again. mid feb should be early enough for me zone 5. My guess is that your plants needed more sun and less shade and competition from the other plants. You should have had tons of ripe habanero and anaheim by now and Jalapeno are early also. If you bring in plants I would not use a lot of grow lights. they will probably not make it anyway. read up on overwintering peppers. I plant all mind in pots in the spring that I want to bring in over the winter. thus avoiding the transplanting shock in the fall. You might try the heavy prune method. dig up remove some roots and a lot of the top and repot in soil. keep cool and let grow slowly. watch for aphids. The shock from potting up will probably drop all the leaves but not the peppers so much. Freeze all the peppers you can harvest and then learn what to do with them. If the harvest is really big and the freezer is very small then chop them up before freezing to reduce the volume. You can also fill a mason jar half full of vinegar and fill with peppers kept under the vinegar and they will keep. Read up on making hot sauce. Mine was a HD find and they are now starting to come up nicely in a large planter by my potting bench. They were VonBergerondegone or something or other! I never can remember their name! I can remember, was it Dablo/Daen who first posted his last spring?

I don't remember who first posted the Nerine or the Hymenocallis, but both bulbs really caught my eye... I've got quite a little collection going of bulbs that are sort of related to the Hippis... Rhodophiala bifida, Zephyranthes, Lycoris radiata, etc... and of course, these two new bulbs. They were very reasonably priced, too! Both were only $2.99 per bulb, and I've seen them listed on eBay for a lot more!

Mine are just beginning to show a bit of green, so yours will be in bloom first... I can't wait to see them!

I can't imagine why your emails aren't getting through... I'm getting all my other mail!

Ok... can you email Cindee, and have her forward a message to me? I just received email from her yesterday or the day before... so, I think hers will go through...

I wonder where the problem is? I haven't had anyone else tell me they couldn't get through... technology, you gotta love it... when it works!

I'll also try sending another email... I'm stumped... I can't imagine what's wrong...

I sent you my other address that I rarely use... we were finally able to connect last night! Still have no idea why the server would return an email... I'll have to see what the Old Guy says about it... maybe there's something he can do to fix it.

All's well that ends well... with email, that is.
