My amaryllis & Easter Lily

I tried to cross my pink amaryllis but failed. Maybe I should go back to the forum and do some more reading. The problem is... I don't have any more bloom to cross!

Don't worry. You can buy some bulbs in the fall again.

Hi Xuan, I was just in vietnam for the christmas and new years break. Which part of vietnam are you from? I think the climate there would be perfect for the hippys,( especially in the south) and any seeds that you plant would thrive in that climate. You are very lucky.

I put my Amaryllis out in June, in their pots to enjoy the summer. They like warm temperatures and it is much too cold at night (and during days even) for it to be outside now. Keep it inside near a sunny window if possible. Water it regularly. Don't cut the foliage (except the spent flower stalk). If you cut the leaves off it is sure to not bloom next year. Then when it is outside for the summer, give it liquid fertilizer. I keep it in the pots - I did an experiment one year planting directly in the ground but found it easier and better result to keep in pots. It can take a fair amount of drying out when outside (so you need not water it as much as other container plants). If the amaryllis bulbs were from discount places my experience they don't rebloom as reliably. Then in fall in late Sept I take the pots in the garage and hold back watering. Eventually the leaves die. They are now dormant. Then I move them to my basement until Jan-March time frame, not watering at all. I then bring them upstairs and water again. They will start to grow and rebloom at this time. Then repeat the cycle. My rule if a bulb doesn't bloom one year I don't waste time with it and just compost it.

I sympathize with your confusion over "Easter Lilies". I used to think lilies only bloomed at Easter. This house I have is an old one--now about 95 years old. At different places around the acres of grounds the lilies come up between the traditional "Easter" lily time and September/October. There may be a few weeks when no lilies bloom, but they are always "getting ready" if not actually blooming. They are all colors. Some bloom in full sun, other in full shade, yet others in between. Some are blooming like crazy right now in this August heat. Some bear leaves in spring, some bear leaves in the fall, and some bear leaves the entire summer. Some die down, some don't. Go figure. Whomever planted these lilies obviously made a study of them and collected a wide variety. I just enjoy them as I can.

I agree it looks asiatic however my only reason for being somewhat curious is there is a lily growing where the black lily was planted. I'm sure you're right as I assumed the same thing but just odd that they would have swapped locations. The lily in the spot where the black was planted isn't growing well and is very short but does have sepals forming so I'm hoping they bloom and if they are white I know that somehow the two swapped spots and the black I planted was indeed a mislabeled bulb. You confirmed my theory which is what I wanted but was even dubious of NY own theory lol.

Yes, I do think we have the right climate for hippys since I can grow them very easily [i.e. I just throw them somewhere in the garden and in due time, they come up with beautiful blooms. I have been having red hippys for years and able to force them into blooms for Lunar New Year too. The problem with us is we don't have many variety, just the plain, single red.
Weekend before last, I went to the plant vendors and found the pink one. so I just snatched it and paid the equivalent of $2 [which is very expensive]. The common red one is only $0.35!
So I'd love to be able to propagate my 2 varieties. But I failed in my first attempt with the pink one.
I really adore all the photos of your beautiful amaryllis. Just day-dreaming about them all day at work!!!
I cut this one for my enjoyment in the office!
