Can I grow this here, it says I can?????

Hi all, I purchased a agapanthus Peter Pan/lily of the Nile, these are the names on the tag. It says it is for zones 9 through 10, but you know a lot of plants say that and die in our heat. The place I have in mind to plant it is where it will get approx 3 hours of afternoon sun. When I purchased the plant in Palm Springs they were in the hot sun. We all know Palm Springs gets just as hot as here. They had them out front in the sun at Home Depot, so they must handle the heat.

What do you all think after I plant it will this plant make it through the summer with about 3 hours of hot sun or should I put it in the shade, and if I do put it in the shade what about when winter comes around it will need sun. The tag says full sun or some shade, that always confuses me.

Do any of you grow this type of plant???????? I have always wanted one.

Hi Carrie! I put a lily of the Nile in a large pot earlier this year. I used miracle gro potting soil and feed it with miracle gro. It is growing in the filtered shade of a mesquite. It was my first time with this beautiful plant and it is growing like crazy. It has put out repeated blooming stalks. The blue flowers are so pretty. I have been real pleased with mine so far and it is in the upper 90's now. I do not think full sun would be a good idea despite what the tag says. I am ready to plant more but will see how it goes in the summer heat. In the winter the pot received more sun and was ok with that. Good luck! Linda

Carrie - I grow them on the east side of the house - early morning sun and then shade from about 11AM on....they have been very happy!

Gale, I don't know if you ever found your sweet potato slips, but if you want some in spring of '06, I can try to send you some once the weather breaks. The oriental markets here regularly carry a sweet potato with reddish-purple skin and a pale yellow flesh when cooked, and they sprout just as well as any other sweet potato. According to my husband, those are the proper kind to use for Kuri Kinton at New Year's - I don't usually do other Japanese recipes with sweet potatoes.

thank you for replyin jimshy, I have read somewhere that the scent of africAN gardenia is horrible i think it was on daves garden. so, i was not sure because of that comment...eventhough it is one comment. i dont mind a slow grower. but .. can i ask...since the plant is a slow grower, is it a slow flowerer.( if that makes any sense lol) like will it take forever for a bud to open or show up for that matter? i never understood that about slow growing everbloomers. same question can be asked for aglaia orodata.

I agree with LA girl, and it would be worth trying greens like collards, kale, mustard, etc. But it's probably too late to plant them now. You could try for an early spring crop, planting say in late February or early March. Any chance you could limb up some trees to allow more afternoon sun in? Most vegetables need six hours of direct sunlight a day, but in summer, they like that western sun to be a BIT dappled. If worst comes to worse, there are many beautiful shade plants that would do well: ferns, farfugiums, hellebores, purple oxalis, gingers, and more. As far as the depth of the beds, you could dig down into the soil in the bottom, loosen and amend it. That's what I did to my raised beds. It takes a good bit of work, but it's totally worth it.

We sell these where I work and I usually advise morning sun, not afternoon sun. it sounds like aajones has the right idea on this plant.

I usually have a tough time discussing why the tags on the plants say full sun and advising customers not to have the plant in full Arizona afternoon sun. I guess the best I can say is that the plants and their tags are usually from California. I don't know if it's the abundance of moisture in the atmosphere or what, but plants can survive full sun there but fry out here.

Thanks you guys for the input. Where I am my temps are a little hotter then Tucson. I will have to find another place with morning sun only. I think the original place I was going to put it will be to hot because the few hours of sun it will get is afternoon sun. So I am on the hunt around the garden for the right place for this plant. I really like the blooms one opened up today and it is still in its original pot that I purchased it in.

i have agapanthus 'peter pan' and it gets morning sun in its location. can't say how it's going to stand up to the summer, though, since this is my first year here.
here is what mine looks like, going on week two in the ground.
