Germinating Spruce Tree Seeds

Hi. I was given a package of spruce tree seeds from one of my teachers who got it from her daughter who was going to just throw them out. I planted 4 of them. How do I speed up germination? I know that temperature could play a factor, for example:

Keep temperatures between 75 and 95 and you can see Mexican Fan Palm seedlings in 2 weeks

Keep a small flower pot filled with soil in the fridge and you can see apple seedlings in as little as a week(my apple tree germinated in 4 days)

So, should I keep temperatures warmer or cooler for spruce tree seeds? Also, what other conditions should I provide for the fastest germination? Thanks in advanced!

FYI, you don't want them to germinate now. You want them to germinate in spring.

I would try a critter protected area in the yard mulched lightly. In zone 5 it should feel at home. I haven't tried this before but I have gotten Pinus Strobus seeds come up wild in similar circumstances.

Hi! Happy to have come across this post. Just having some fun browsing. Haven't been here in months! I'd love to try my hand at a tree peony. I am like you in that I love to start any and every plant from seed and learn all there is to growing it through experience, trial and error (hopefully not that of course). Do you have any tree peony seeds available? I am also looking for lots of morning glory seeds (doesn't matter what color, although blue always says "Morning Glory" to me for some reason), true perennial hollyhock seeds, Prairie Splendor Echinacea, and perennial Salvia, oh and am interested in restarting my bonsai seedlings . . . if you have any seeds of a Japanese Black Pine or a Japanese Maple that would be awesome! Browse through my list and see what catches your eye. Even though I haven't updated it this year, but I did late last year so everything is pretty much updated. arthurm, I meant how long would it take to develop an epiphytic orchid that can grow on its own here in Southern California. In other words...an epiphytic orchid that can thrive without any supplemental watering. There aren't any epiphytic orchids in Mediterranean climates (winter rain). So orchids that we grow outside year around are tested by our cool/cold winter rains. The more fit an epiphytic orchid is, the better adapted it will be. It will be able to take advantage of the winter rain and grow when other orchids will be resting. Over time the orchids will become fitter and fitter...they'll produce more offspring than the less fit orchids. It's a numbers game. The more orchid seeds we throw at Southern California...the sooner we'll find an orchid that has the combination of inputs/traits it needs to be perfectly adapted to our winter rain climate.

hey try the link for a general discussion .. especially in regard to media ... you might get further.. by asking specific questions... rather than hoping someone will write you a complete thesis on growing ... do you have any info ... at all??? ken ps: actual xmas trees.. are highly pruned production trees... most trees do not grow in that shape.. all by themselves ... I used this method which you described in your post on two seed of organic lemon and the result is in pic. both plants are 1 month old in the pic. It took 12 days to the seed to grow from normal seeds to 1.5 cm long roots. And then i plant the seeds with cute tiny roots in normal citurs soil with pre-added citrus nutritions. I put the seeds just under the soil probably with half a cm under soil and cover the pot normal plastic bag without making it air tight. But the seeds and plants never been in the direct sunlight. After one month i used fertilizer and it made the plants really happy. I will upload the updated picture of 1.5 month old plants tomorrow. I do not know about the process of putting seeds in the freezer but i read that many people use this process and i love to know difference. Good luck.

Well, the seeds are in pots. I can't plant them outside at this time of year I don't think. They're going to be grown for use as a Christmas tree to use in like 10 or 15 years.

Why can't you plant them outside? Naturally they would be outside.

Because I want to grow them as an indoor house plant. I already have a White Pine that I'm leaving in it's pot outside. It's already dormant. I want to grow an indoor spruce.

Seeds of spruce trees need a period of "stratification," which means being stored at cold temperatures for a minimum period of time. Without this period of cold dormancy, they will not germinate. I am not sure if different spruce species need different periods of stratification at different temperatures. You could plant them outside in the fall, and have them stratified that way if you are in a cold climate. I have done that and had good results, meaning 25% germination. I am not sure of the quality fo the seed I used, however. Or you can use a refrigerator.

If you do a search of "spruce seed stratification" you will find some sites that will explain.

Any idea what kind of spruce? Most North American native and naturalized spruces make lousy house plants...even if they do germinate. For example, most would require a certain amount of winter cold in order to have bud break in the spring. Also, if your seed is from Colorado Blue Spruce, it will bite you with its sharp needles so often that even if it did live you'd pitch it before it reached 2 feet tall. Then there is the dryness of indoor air (both winter and summer with A/C) that is not only inhospitable for them, but also makes most spruces spider mite heaven.

I wish I knew what kind of spruce it is. The package just says "Spruce Tree." It didn't give a scientific name or a common name.
